I dont think anyone in Chicago thought it would end like this for Mariotti.
Most people probably hoped they would fire him first.

I'd still use the web for news even if I lived in a place that has a good daily paper. The ink on paper daily media can't update as fast as or as often as web sites do. I might look at a daily paper's site if the posted the work of their better columnists but there is no way that I'm going back to having a paper delivered to my crib. Disposing of an old paper is nothing but a hassle. I was in the habit of throwing a paper away after I'd scanned the sheet & read what appealed to me. Old news can't really be called news.
Off thread: If papers continue to fold, where will people who don't have access to a computer or aren't computer literate get things like up to date local obits? Will friends of the deceased phone each other with the sad news or will the undertaker do it [for a price maybe?]? What about long lost or casual friends who could be counted on to attend the wake? This could become an issue for older or poor people. Society could be further fragmented if there's no way to respect the dead at a wake. A community rite might dissappear. What happens to a community then? Friendship is precious; it binds ties to a community.

How does that guy talk at all with his foot permanently lodged in his mouth?

I live in Chicago - everyone knows Jay Mariotti is an egotistical jerk. He's the type of journalist who gives sports journalists a bad name. Good riddance.

Jay is right. Good example is The Huffington Post. I get almost all my National News from The Huffington Post. I don't Read any National Newspaper. I do suscribe to The Nation magazine. But as for Newspapers, I don't suscribe to any. Because it is so convient to get my news from the web.

The last thing the printed media will do is fess up to themselves (and never to the public) they have been patsies to a unconstitutional government. As others have stated, it's the LIES they promote and increasingly shoddy news coverage that hurt their bottom lines and future, not just the internet. And the more staff they cut, the worse it will get. Since they are still cutting staff, guess they are sealing their own fate.

Chinese ownership of our printed media coming? Karl Marx couldn't even dream of that one. Oh, wait, our media already has experience of toting the party line.

They would be doing a lot better if they weren't stained republican yellow for the last 10 years.

The decline of the fourth estate and the decline of our freedom are equivalent. The mixing of news with entertainment has degraded the quality of both functions. And intentionally hiding information and data from the public to protect political and economic interests is the most despicable commission of our controlled media. An organization dies on the vine without accurate and timely information freely shared with all membership.

Oh no! There's such a dearth of sports reporters! What ever shall we do? Who will cover the next big sports bar opening in Chicago?

Way to sustain the industry there, bub, by leaving it. Do something different than what your competing media are doing and you might not have to play press pallbearer.

LOL

Yes why is there 10 minutes of a 30 minute NEWS broadcast spent on sports anyway?

They've made themselves irrelevant. They report lies and innuendo and half truths. They took on this new (stupid) entertainment way of reporting news. They've lost the trust of the people and the people have decided to hold onto their money. And now we have the internet. Once trust is broken, it's extremely difficult to get back. The 4th estate is about to get their comeuppance.

Hmmm "report lies and innuendo" .... Sounds a lot like broadcast news. Can't wait til they get their comeuppance.
