Hilary Duff's Dad Arrested

HOUSTON — A judge in Texas has ordered the father of actress and singer Hilary Duff to spend 10 days in jail for contempt of court.

Bob Duff was led away in handcuffs Wednesday during a court hearing after Judge Thomas Stansbury in Houston determined he violated an injunction against selling assets without court approval.

The Houston Chronicle reported in its online edition that Bob Duff must pay into a court repository $367,537 he earned from selling stocks last month.

Bob Duff's attorney Robert Piro said his client would post bond and file an appeal.

Bob and Susan Duff are in the midst of a bitter divorce.

Stansbury determined Bob Duff should pay Susan $12,500 for Hilary's birthday party, which was the subject of the hearing. Her mother wanted $25,000 to pay for a present and party.

Neither Hilary, whose 21st birthday is Sept. 28, nor her sister Haylie were in court.

And $25,000 for a birthday present, again, that MOM bought?? What, dad's presents weren't good enough? And if he didn't attend the party, why in the hell should they make him pay for it??

And the biggest thing of all, she's 21. This isn't a divorce court in which we're talking about little kids or something. Hilary is a grown woman. Doesn't she have her own job or something? Why does mom have to fleece dad out of all of his money??

1) We don't know if daddy agreed to split the cost in advance, and if the budget was 12,500 and Mommy spent 50K.

But no matter, why does any (sane) parent throw a ridiculously lavish party for a multi-millionaire ADULT daughter. Even if Mom is her manager, that should come out of the business, not personal accounts.

But selling assets during a divorce proceeding is just begging for trouble, especially hundreds of thousands worth. And doing it against an injunction is criminal, never mind criminally stupid.

A $25,000 birthday party? That's all? Must be nice, although that is far from the excesses we see laid out for many celebs. I think a good rule of thumb should be, don't spend so much on a party that settling the bills could wind up in court.
