Reporters have frequently commented on the degeneration of John McCain's "Straight Talk Express" policy throughout the campaign, but his lack of openness with the press came to the fore in a recent interview with Time Magazine. Below are some excerpts from the interview.

McCain at first seemed happy enough to do the interview. But his mood quickly soured. The McCain on display in the 24-minute interview was prickly, at times abrasive, and determined not to stray off message.

...

There's a theme that recurs in your books and your speeches, both about putting country first but also about honor. I wonder if you could define honor for us?
Read it in my books.

I've read your books.
No, I'm not going to define it.

But honor in politics?
I defined it in five books. Read my books.

...

In 2000, after the primaries, you went back to South Carolina to talk about what you felt was a mistake you had made on the Confederate flag. Is there anything so far about this campaign that you wish you could take back or you might revisit when it's over?

[Does not answer.]

Do I know you? [Says with a laugh.]
[Long pause.] I'm very happy with the way our campaign has been conducted, and I am very pleased and humbled to have the nomination of the Republican Party.

...

A lot of people know about your service from your books, but most people don't know that you have two sons currently in the military. Can you describe what it means to have Jack and Jimmy in uniform?
We don't discuss our sons.

Looks like Rove has ordered him, when you feel anoyed and testy just say, I'm proud of the way my campaign has been conducted and honored to have the nomination. That will be your stock answer John to any question you don't have the intellect to answer, or don't feel like answering. Got it John, now go out there and make me and bushie proud.

Really - what is the use of having journalists travel with him on his little bus, when he wont answer questions? He could just as well use a telegraph to dot-dot-dash his message, and without pictures, no one would know he is acting out in a rage when he doesnt get his way.

Anytime anyone else acts like this, I'd sually suggest changing their diaper and putting them down
for a nice little nap. Storytime after that usually makes em right as rain.

I guess his staff will get back to him, after they read the book that someone else seems to have written for him.

Maybe John McCain didn't even write his books ? Maybe they were authored by a ghost writer? I wouldn't at all be surprised.

McBush sure doesn't seem like a nice guy. I can't wait to see Obama try to get him to lose his (McW's) temper -- it'll be great to watch !!

I have said all along, the guy might have been honorable but is suffering from PTSD. I have known guys from Viet Nam that were only involved for a year or two over there with life long problems. Prickly and grumpy is not just related to an age issue. Poor John, how can his convention next week compete with the spectacular display we have witnessed this week. And they might have a hurricane in NOLA once again and then we can be reminded of another Bush failure. Too bad all the evangelicals that prayed for rain in Denver have no clout at all.

They got their rain ... just not where they wanted it ... God's way of sending a message? I think I would listen if I were in their shoes.

God works in mysterious ways His wonders to perform. I can hear Shug (Color Purple) singing "God is Tryin' To Tell You Somethin'".

If that idiot that was praying for rain truly believes in God( I don't ) then he would have to also believe that Obama gave his dynamic speech under beautiful skys provided by guess who? GOD! Ha Ha what a joke these evangelicals have become! GO BARACK & BIDEN!!

If those evangelicals TRULY believed, a beautiful night in Denver, coupled with a potential hurricane (in of all places, New Orleans) would convince them that they are backing the wrong candidate! They keep looking for signs, they even prayed for it and they can't even see it when it hits them between the eyes. In other words, those evangelicals are full of something that comes out the rear end of a horse.

And it remains to be seen whether his deteriorating relations with front-line reporters will be reflected at all in the coverage that most Americans in their newspapers and magazines and on TV. To the CEOs and boards of the corporate media, what the journalists in their employ may think doesn't matter. They still want McCain to be president and will do whatever they can to make that happen.

It's clear from this interview and from his recent campaigning that he has forgotten what honor in politics is. He also seems like complete jerk.
