I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Montage

Andrew Sullivan:

It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy.

What he didn't do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again ... and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.

TPM's Josh Marshall:

I thought this was a very strong speech. About exactly what was needed. It was a strong speech. He made the case for himself; he laid out clear policy goals; and he aggressively set forth the stakes of the campaign. He made the case against John McCain while not attacking his character -- which makes a clear contrast with McCain's aggressively personal, denigrating campaign strategy.

I've heard a few people say that he seemed to hold back from giving the soaring speech he might have given. But I suspect that was intentional and I think a good decision. Meta-themes and tonality form the deeper structure of political communication. And the aim of this speech was not eloquence but strength.

Washington Post's Chris Cillizza:

The optics of the event - the first national party convention to be held outdoors since John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960 -- were breathtaking. Television screens filled with images of Obama supporters dancing in the aisles to the tunes of Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow; a blazing orange sun set on an arid Colorado night as Obama prepared to take the stage. The speech ended with fireworks and confetti, as Obama, his runningmate, Sen. Joe Biden, and their families stood together waving to the crowd of delegates and supporters, at the climax of the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Hillary Clinton:

"Barack Obama's speech tonight laid out his specific, bold solutions and optimistic vision for our nation and our children's future.

"His speech crystallized the clear choice between he and Senator McCain. Four more years of the same failed policies or a leader who can tackle the great challenges we face: revitalizing our economy and restoring our standing in the world. I am proud to support Senator Obama, our next President of the United States and Joe Biden, our next Vice President of the United States."

Radar's Charles Kaiser:

It was the perfect culmination of a convention that was just as well-choreographed as the campaign that preceded it. Obama's speech was a splendid blend of stagecraft and substance. If you read the text, it hardly jumps off the page. But in Obama's hands it came alive, particularly here:

* We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.

And here:

* If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters.

The cumulative effect of the words of Michelle, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Obama himself should give the him a noticeable bounce.

MotherJones' David Corn:

It was a historic speech on a historic night--in a remarkable setting. A crowd of tens of thousands of Americans, filling an entire stadium in the middle of the country, waved American flags and signs calling for "Change." Never in the nation's history had more Americans attended such an event. Never before had an African-American accepted the presidential nomination of a major party in the United States. And the speech of Barack Obama matched the moment.

He connected his own history--the history of a not-quite-ordinary American family--to the mythical promise of America. His rhetoric soared--as usual--but it was tethered to reality: in particular, the stark differences between how Obama would approach the challenges the nation now faces and how John McCain would do so. Obama laced his criticism of the Bush years and the possible McCain years with a dose of populism, which gave portions of the speech a sharp edge. And he brought his pitch for hope and change down to the ground with a succinct description of policy ideas he would work for as president.

Andrew Sullivan: It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more...

Reaction from America's media.

"We would rather talk about McCain's VP choice'

Even the media in Obama's pocket aren't interested in what happened last night. It's going to prove to be as big a bust as Obama's Euro trip.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:55 PM on 08/29/2008

They're just as interested in O"s powerful speech. But hats off to the Repubs for drawing the attention to the vp choice. We knew it would happen.

It's drawing a lot of attention because everyone is moaning about the fact that this woman is willing to be chosen only because she's a woman. How sad!! I guess some people don't mind being used...... He did not choose because she's done much of anything.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:10 PM on 08/29/2008

The most important questin in my mind is "Is this woman capable of being Commander in Chief if McCain slips into a permanent Alzheimer's coma or something?"

I think Obama has a good back-up guy in Biden but McCain is posturing. As usual.

Paradoxically, the fact that Sen. Obama delivered a pitch-perfect, moving, and, for the Republicans, a devastating speech before an absolutely massive crowd isn't actually... news.

38 million Americans watched it. Everyone who's seen it has judged it for themselves. What's left for the media?

The fact that Fox News was silent, that Pat Buchannan was enthralled, that Alex Castellanas at CNN had nothing but positive remarks... THAT was news. But they won't dwell on it, because it's embarrassing that they can't find fault.

Now, Sen. McCain choosing a quirky, largely inexperienced running mate who seems to have been specifically chosen to appeal to disgruntled (and clueless) Hillary Clinton supporters... that's news.

The fact that he has chosen a woman with zero economic and foreign policy credentials, with no working knowledge of Washington DC, as a potential replacement should he have any relapse of cancer, or any other issues associated with his age, and rough treatment all those years ago, is nearly unthinkable.

But not out of character.

Same BS democrat speech you get every 4 years. Kerry gave it last time, Gore before that. Only difference, they were indoors.

I have never heard a Democrat, or a Republican, deliver a speech quite like that. Josiah Bartlett came close a few times, but he was fictional, and didn't actually have to worry about the "real" media.

You haven't been listening.

Polls...he is up 8% after the convention bump on Gallup and only 3% on Rasmussen. He should have been leading by double digits this whole time. McC will get a bump after next week. We'll see where the polls are when the dust settles.

"These bloggers"...it's an O site for heaven's sake. LOL!! Go to the Republican blogs and you'll see just the opposite.

Really. Read something besides Huffpo. There's a whole world out there you aren't aware of evidently.

I'm not going to mix words but...are your stupid? Obama had grown folks at that stadium crying for change (literally). Whites, Blacks, Hispanics, Asians, young, old everyone had tears in there eyes and goose bumps! Then Senator Obama, skinned, cleaned, de-boned, and smoked McCain AND the entire Republican Party. Where have you been? And after McCain's totally unorthodox VP pick of Palin and her pro-life, radical platforms and support of big oil in Alaska today...you can stick a fork in McCain now, cause’ he is cooked!!

So you're saying a lot of those people weren't O supporters and he won them over and now they are? Really? Interesting. Who knew.

Obviously, we heard two different speeches. I said I thought it was a good speech but I don't think he annihilated his oppostion by any means.

It's good that you are so confident. I personally have learned never to expect too much out of the American public. These are the people who elected Bush not once but twice. Nothing they do will surprise me.

I think it was a great convention. I applaud the Clintons for their part. I am proud of Barack and Michelle Obama for their class.

Take Note: Flirting 101

Barack Obama compliments his wife on a great speech, and tells her she looks cute, too.

John McCain offers his wife to participate in a topless (and sometimes bottomless) bikers' contest.

Now who's presidential? Not to mention McCain's crude name calling.

My husband is black and I am white and we are over 60 and were in tears by the end of Obama's speech. It was not just about who he is--though that is enormously important-it was about what our country could be like if we embraced values of caring and justice and mercy instead of greed and fear and competition. I felt proud to be part of this campaign and proud that I am simply one participant in a swelling movement. I haven't felt this excited about politics since 1968.

I am multiracial and identified instantly with Obama when I heard his DNC keynote speech in 2004. I am 39yrs old and racial discrimination was not something I experienced a lot of, but my parents did and my older siblings did. Growing up my life was rich with diversity and awareness of the civil rights movement.

Unfortunetly my parents are not alive to see "The Dream" realized. I too am proud, I believe that yours, your husband and my parents pride must run a little deeper.

History was made for America last night, and what a proud moment it was! Obama is brilliant, and supported by the only statesmen in the American political stable. And this is given even more sharp relief by McCain's cynical choice of a political neonate as running mate.

OK, I'll say it - I have NEVER been so proud to be an American, as well as a Democrat, this entire week and especially last night! Did you note all of the different faces, colors, HATS, the folks dancing in their seats & aisles? TRULY an inspiration! (Much like Dennis Kucinich's speech Tuesday night
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bVp9cWOcZ7g )

Too bad the anti-American, anti-woman, anti-family, anti-integrity G0P and McAngryboooo$h & his Wolf-Sl@yer governor won't put us all first like Obama/Biden, even HRC for that matter, do.

And, did you notice how it did NOT rain Barack out last night after that preacher called for the right-wing-nut-jobs to "pray for"? Yet Gustav is heading for the Gulf coast on the week of the 3rd anniversay of the worst man-made disaster this Country has ever seen from Katrina? Just in time for johnnyMcCrashedAlot's "acceptance speech"?! If we had ANY reservation of there being a "God", this answered that question for me!!!!! :) I sure do love seeing a good example of "just deserts"!!!!!

Yes, Jan

I agree with you wholeheartedly...what a phenomenal evening to cap off a terrific convention. We watched everything on PBS so we didn't get all the media talking heads, just some thoughtful insights from some people who are experienced and bright. Even David Brooks was positive and impressed. He didn't like Obama's speech because it didn't "soar" but I think it was perfect for what needed to be said. If he had done his usual type of speech, they would have criticized him as well.

And I have been chuckling all day about that right wing "Christian" pastor who asked all of his followers to pray for disaster for their opponent. Obviously the far right does not believe in a two party system or anything other than a dictatorship. Not only Gustav, but Hanna look as though they may negatively impact the Republicans' party. Be careful what you pray for : )

I do hold the people of the Gulf Coast in my prayers for a good outcome, and hope they can endure. It seems the administration may actually have learned a lesson from Katrina (difficult as that is to believe) and they have put buses in place to assist in an evacuation.

Thank you..

Well Obama had an absolutly gorgeous time all 4 days....but seems that the Pastor might have prayed up some karma. In my faith when you seek harm to others it just might come back on you...a fine "Christian" he is.

I am in Louisiana waiting for what might be as bad as Katrina. We can not leave because we have horses and other animals...we do live far enough away from New Orleans that any flooding will bother us, but we will have damage. With Katrina we lost about 80 trees and some damage to the house. I wonder what kind of human being would wish harm on others because of political reasons? And Wright was supposed to be bad?

Sheesh, you'd think that Obama was running to be the daddy for a bunch of people that are kids and can't seem to grow up.

I can understand why the youth vote would flock to him with politically naive understandings of issues, and then easily seduced by a message of: I'm going to take care of you, I'm going to pay for your health care, I'll pay for this, pay for that etc.

I used to be a democrat when I was a teenager and was seduced by those, Im going to take care of you and pay for this, pay for that kind of messages. It was because I didnt take initiative, and expected the goverment to take care of me, always blaming someone else for my misfortune.

Then, I grew up, and havent looked back since

You didn't listen to his speech did you? So here, I'll help you. As usual, he told the youth of America that in order to reap the benefits of society, a college education for eg., they were going to have to pay it back in terms of service to community and/or country. Guess you missed that part.

What you also seemed to miss was his promise to reward hard work, which is very different than the failed Republican strategy to reward the rich for simply being rich and expecting the little working people to be grateful for whatever coins trickle down.

Believing that the richest most pro-active nation on earth is capable of producing the best educated, most healthy population isn't naive. It's a no-brainer.
