I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Montage

Andrew Sullivan:

It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy.

What he didn't do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again ... and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.

TPM's Josh Marshall:

I thought this was a very strong speech. About exactly what was needed. It was a strong speech. He made the case for himself; he laid out clear policy goals; and he aggressively set forth the stakes of the campaign. He made the case against John McCain while not attacking his character -- which makes a clear contrast with McCain's aggressively personal, denigrating campaign strategy.

I've heard a few people say that he seemed to hold back from giving the soaring speech he might have given. But I suspect that was intentional and I think a good decision. Meta-themes and tonality form the deeper structure of political communication. And the aim of this speech was not eloquence but strength.

Washington Post's Chris Cillizza:

The optics of the event - the first national party convention to be held outdoors since John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960 -- were breathtaking. Television screens filled with images of Obama supporters dancing in the aisles to the tunes of Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow; a blazing orange sun set on an arid Colorado night as Obama prepared to take the stage. The speech ended with fireworks and confetti, as Obama, his runningmate, Sen. Joe Biden, and their families stood together waving to the crowd of delegates and supporters, at the climax of the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Hillary Clinton:

"Barack Obama's speech tonight laid out his specific, bold solutions and optimistic vision for our nation and our children's future.

"His speech crystallized the clear choice between he and Senator McCain. Four more years of the same failed policies or a leader who can tackle the great challenges we face: revitalizing our economy and restoring our standing in the world. I am proud to support Senator Obama, our next President of the United States and Joe Biden, our next Vice President of the United States."

Radar's Charles Kaiser:

It was the perfect culmination of a convention that was just as well-choreographed as the campaign that preceded it. Obama's speech was a splendid blend of stagecraft and substance. If you read the text, it hardly jumps off the page. But in Obama's hands it came alive, particularly here:

* We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.

And here:

* If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters.

The cumulative effect of the words of Michelle, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Obama himself should give the him a noticeable bounce.

MotherJones' David Corn:

It was a historic speech on a historic night--in a remarkable setting. A crowd of tens of thousands of Americans, filling an entire stadium in the middle of the country, waved American flags and signs calling for "Change." Never in the nation's history had more Americans attended such an event. Never before had an African-American accepted the presidential nomination of a major party in the United States. And the speech of Barack Obama matched the moment.

He connected his own history--the history of a not-quite-ordinary American family--to the mythical promise of America. His rhetoric soared--as usual--but it was tethered to reality: in particular, the stark differences between how Obama would approach the challenges the nation now faces and how John McCain would do so. Obama laced his criticism of the Bush years and the possible McCain years with a dose of populism, which gave portions of the speech a sharp edge. And he brought his pitch for hope and change down to the ground with a succinct description of policy ideas he would work for as president.

Andrew Sullivan: It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more...

Before Barack's amazing speech, placed the pictures of my eight grandchildren up in front of my tv. I did this to remind myself that this election is all about their future! There is hope damn it, and I refuse to let the cynical, legions of hate and fear drive it from my life! When I look into the eyes of my legacy, and I see the wonders of their future, I know we can make a differance with the people we choose to "move the ball forward"!
McSame, Bush, Cheney, Gulliani etc, cannot be allowed to persist in there cynical and craven destruction of our country!

WE can do it! YES WE CAN!

Yeah, America can still be great - it isn't too late. I was proud to be an American sitting at home watching that speech. Watching everything, the people weren't there to see a rock star, they were there to see a leader they desperately need.

We have seen Michelle’s family & Biden’s family but where is Obama’s Mother & Grandmother? Is he ashamed of them.

Why are people so flipping stupid? These are the McCain supporters.

Obama's mother was front and center in the stands and on stage, I guess she thought Michelle's mom was her maid or nanny. Obama's grandmother is ill and can't travel. Some people are just plain ignorant. Posting on Faux News, that should tell you right there that's she's an idiot.

You must mean Joe Biden's mom. Obama's died at 52. His grandmother is, as you said, too ill to travel. And he mentioned that.

Of the people who vote republican, 90% of them are stupid or ignorant or both. They spend their time watching American Idol and other distracting programs because caring about the direction of your country and being interested in politics would make their heads explode.

Obama's mother is dead. That is one of things that he was doing on his family vacation in Hawaii; scattering her ashes and visiting his grandmother who is too ill to travel. He grew up there. So much for the luxury vacation to Hawaii.

To me, that speech reminds me of 9/11 ... in that it contains a wheelbarrow of positive force as heavy as the negative experienced on that tragic day. This man is the first leader I've seen actually fight for American families and talk of real change. He demands the best out of each and every capable one of us, and wants nothing more than to restore the American dream and promise. His vision is precise and thoughtful, and makes me see that there is indeed only one candidate in this "race" for the presidency.

In his attempt to make a splash, McCain was not putting country first as the banners in the stadium proclaimed.

This makes the "heartbeat away from" statement even more important. At 72 my Dad was fine one day, and not the next.

The problem that I have with the speech is the extra expense that went into retrofitting a second venue. The Democrats spent millions in retrofitting the Denver convention center and now they have to restore it. In these times of economic insecurity, it would have been a better example to save money. I don't think that moving the venue so that a few thousand more people could be there in person justified the expense to say the increased risk that it put Obama in. But, few seem to see it as a lavish expense. The money could have gone to helping elect other democratic candidates.

The Convention is paid for by private funds...not from the donations to Obama or the DNC. There are seperate donations for that. In fact I believe3 there is a law that keeps those things seperate.

It was a great, joyful, loving spectacle anchored with substance. It looks like Steven Spielberg and George Lucas contributed to making this the perfectly synchronized and nuanced even that it was. This was good money spent for the common good. Would you rather have had it spent on the Super Bowl or a Rolling Stones concert?

Oh and there was 84,000 people there and from what I heard they had to turn away 20,000 more. And the Obama campaign has each and every cell phone number and more volunteers...they are campaign geniuses.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:58 PM on 08/29/2008

It might not be important to you, but if you had contributed to the campaign, volunteered, given money and managed to get to the convention, I hazard to say it would have been very important to you to be allowed to attend this evening event...as it was to all those who went, and those who could not get in.

I contribute to the Obama Campaign and am happy to have my contributions allow as many people as possible to attend an even larger venue. Even us little donors and volunteers deserved that opportunity, this was not exclusive to maxed out contributors. Keep that in mind, when judging who should have been given access due to a smaller venue. Obama is about the little people, and that who was allowed to attend in a larger venue. Everyone involved, working hard deserves that celebration. This campaign is about inclusion of everyone.

The McCain VP pick was meant to win a 24-hour news cycle after the brilliant Obama speech and a very successful Democratic Party convention that unified the party. So he might win the 24-hour media cycle and then what?

This is the Bush approach to the Iraq War. We invade and win the short game and we have no plan for what to do next. Unbelievable!!!

Could the Republicans have passed up better VP options just to get a short-term tactical win in the media? McCain rolls the dice and comes up a loser.

The women who were excited by Hillary were Bill Clinton fans within the Democratic party. These women had deep ties to the state of New York and the Democratic Party establishment. They will not vote for a candidate just because she is a woman.

I think it depends on whether they can connect with Ms. Palin. Given her positions on drill, drill, drill and abortion, she may not deliver. She's also never had a national audience, so I don't know if she's ready. I mean, she seems a bit like a younger, female version of Darth Cheney. I think if O's ppl show that, her newness won't go anyway.

This choice makes me wonder if more experienced potential picks said "no" because Mc-Same has shown the potential to be a disaster.

The republicans can be stupid. Women are not going to vote for that old mysogynist, McCain, just because he picked a woman. The only Hillary supporters who would do that are those batsh*t crazy PUMAs who I really suspect are stealth republicans.

This is pretty cynical on the republicans part. They decided to pick someone who is not a millionaire with 5 houses but has a husband who is a union, blue-collar oil worker and drives herself to work. She is also against choice, pretty, and likes to kill furry animals. But most of all, they think that Biden will not be too hard on her during their one debate. Tear her apart, nicely Joe. If she should have to take over she will have to be able to take it.

Ballots with a paper trail.
I voted absentee and my vote was tampered with. It was sent back to me in a different, sealed, unsigned envelope. I had a witness to my signing when I sent it in.
I wonder what happened. I'm guessing a partisan civil servant who did it because he/she could.

I agree. They will TRY to do whatever it takes. Sen. Obama seemed unaware until recently just how cruel some folks can be. Heck, they even got away with the Biblical tag for Obama that God reserved for those who are blessed with the gift of discernment. But Biden knows about their evil ways. Obama/Biden in Nov.
