I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Montage

Andrew Sullivan:

It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy.

What he didn't do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again ... and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.

TPM's Josh Marshall:

I thought this was a very strong speech. About exactly what was needed. It was a strong speech. He made the case for himself; he laid out clear policy goals; and he aggressively set forth the stakes of the campaign. He made the case against John McCain while not attacking his character -- which makes a clear contrast with McCain's aggressively personal, denigrating campaign strategy.

I've heard a few people say that he seemed to hold back from giving the soaring speech he might have given. But I suspect that was intentional and I think a good decision. Meta-themes and tonality form the deeper structure of political communication. And the aim of this speech was not eloquence but strength.

Washington Post's Chris Cillizza:

The optics of the event - the first national party convention to be held outdoors since John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960 -- were breathtaking. Television screens filled with images of Obama supporters dancing in the aisles to the tunes of Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow; a blazing orange sun set on an arid Colorado night as Obama prepared to take the stage. The speech ended with fireworks and confetti, as Obama, his runningmate, Sen. Joe Biden, and their families stood together waving to the crowd of delegates and supporters, at the climax of the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Hillary Clinton:

"Barack Obama's speech tonight laid out his specific, bold solutions and optimistic vision for our nation and our children's future.

"His speech crystallized the clear choice between he and Senator McCain. Four more years of the same failed policies or a leader who can tackle the great challenges we face: revitalizing our economy and restoring our standing in the world. I am proud to support Senator Obama, our next President of the United States and Joe Biden, our next Vice President of the United States."

Radar's Charles Kaiser:

It was the perfect culmination of a convention that was just as well-choreographed as the campaign that preceded it. Obama's speech was a splendid blend of stagecraft and substance. If you read the text, it hardly jumps off the page. But in Obama's hands it came alive, particularly here:

* We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.

And here:

* If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters.

The cumulative effect of the words of Michelle, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Obama himself should give the him a noticeable bounce.

MotherJones' David Corn:

It was a historic speech on a historic night--in a remarkable setting. A crowd of tens of thousands of Americans, filling an entire stadium in the middle of the country, waved American flags and signs calling for "Change." Never in the nation's history had more Americans attended such an event. Never before had an African-American accepted the presidential nomination of a major party in the United States. And the speech of Barack Obama matched the moment.

He connected his own history--the history of a not-quite-ordinary American family--to the mythical promise of America. His rhetoric soared--as usual--but it was tethered to reality: in particular, the stark differences between how Obama would approach the challenges the nation now faces and how John McCain would do so. Obama laced his criticism of the Bush years and the possible McCain years with a dose of populism, which gave portions of the speech a sharp edge. And he brought his pitch for hope and change down to the ground with a succinct description of policy ideas he would work for as president.

Andrew Sullivan: It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more...

CAN'T STOP THINKING ABOUT YESTERDAY. It was a blessing that I will never forget, and I am not spoiling it by watching the convention today. May God continue to help Obama/Biden pull this country out of the "deep miry clay." Sincerely, Vera

Obama is really influencing and already changing American politics, change has already begun.....................even McCain has to revert from his original plans for VP (which was Romney before his misstep with the number of houses he has) and make a desperation move to choose Mrs. Palin to hope to get all Hillary's supporters.............Wow this man is Awesome..........

The speech is all people are talking about here - even people who do not describe themselves as Democrats.

If you were not moved, you did not watch it.

Or you're a liar like so many of the commentators who dissed the speech. They knew it was a great speech, so thye lied and said it wasn't. Sad and pathetic.

Yeah..I thought for sure that Kerry would have won in 04, after all Bush was terrible, got us into a war. Kerry a war hero, experienced, inteligent....etc, He lost and Bush won. Why? people would rather believe lies. I mean they believed about WMD in Iraq...freedom fries and pouring fine French Wines out in the street...so who said all Americans are smart?
Just don't count your chicks before the eggs are hatched.

It is brilliant in that it panders to a disgruntled and disillusioned group at a time when McCain cannot prevail on the issues.

It will not be not enough to pull McCain out of the Bush-Cheney pit of quicksand though. He should never allowed himself to be lured by them. It is tragic for him personally that he sold out to BushCo, and now gets his prize when they have ruined it for all Republicans. McCain sold his soul for Bush's sloppy seconds. Some maverick! Not even a good strategist because this could have been predicted. He would have been better off embracing John Kerry and making the world a better place, now getting his reward for that.

The biggest thing they can say about Palin is that she is a govenor of Alaska. Alaska has a population of 67000 people...There are more people in the small Louisiana town I live near. Even at that she is under investigation for ethics violation...and with all the oil revenues Alaska has, 10% of their people are below poverty. 67000 people...not much to governing there.

So. How important is the "experience" argument, now that Palin is the running mate? Especially with McCain pushing 72 and his gray matter almost scrambled (judging from his frequent gaffes)? Is she the woman who would be president?

I think Palin as VP is a very scary prospect considering McCain is getting on in years and not too well physically or mentally. There is a very real possibility she would have to take over. He seems to be losing it mentally already.

She is a token for McC**t and she may earn him a few votes (and lose him a few) but the VP also has to be ready to be president.

He should have made a more serious selection. This is clear pandering after Hillary's desperate move to make this election all about gender issues.

I think opposite.

I love his choice.

I've now moved from not voting at all to voting for mac.

I AM thrilled. Simply thrilled.

I may not get that moment in the great Greek setting, but I am thrilled to get my voice heard.

It will go to MAC in the affirmative.

I'm in a blue state. May not matter.

but I have to warn you, that yestereday's poll showed O under 10%. That was always my own personal cut-off point. If Mac got below 10%, I said I'd make a decision.

Yesterday, CA polls showed: O dropped below 10%.

Today, Mac gave me good reason to support him.

I'm going for it.

I state, for the record, Dems are off-track. They made identity politics the issue. This was not the year.

They lose.

Let's see....

Vote for the man who has over 9+years in government service, with his VP who has over 35 years of public service, or the other candidate who can't remember who the Shia and the Sunni are, is confused about the economy, doesn't know how many homes he owns, seems to have a repeated pattern of either "not knowing" or getting "confused", who blasts notions of "experience" as being critical, and who has now selected the politician under investigation for heavy handed retaliatory conduct towards a state trooper divorced from her sister, who doesn't know what a VP does.

Gulp. Another frightening example of very frightening WRONG-JUDGEMENT.

McCain is WRONG on judgement, WRONG on leadership, WRONG for America.
WIth Palin being only a heartbeat away from the most powerful position in America, ....how on earth can McCain justify the selection of someone who DOES NOT KNOW WHAT A VP does.
And THAT is supposed to be the model of what is "good" for America and of "leadership" and "good judgement"? !!!!

YIKES!

Great speech by Obama, and there's no way Palin will be able to compete with Biden. Not a chance.

A month ago, she told Larry Kudlow that she didn't even know what the VP did all day. And with McCain's advanced age, there is a very good chance that this one-term governor, five-time mother, could be the Commander in Chief.

InSANE pick.

She has 5 kids including a newborn. Will nannies care for them while she does whatever a VP does all day?

Don't Republicans generally think their women should put family first while the kids are little? I'm confused.

The speech was amazing. Simply stunning. I am a convert to Obama after being there in Invesco last night. I still think Biden is a huge wet squib that could pull teh campaign down, especially given teh palin pick. But Obama has my support 100%.

His speech was very good but only because he promised to fix every broken thing we have in America. Do you really believe he is capable, or will even have the power, to do any of it? He often reminds me of a child staring at a decorated Christmas tree - oh the splendor that child sees.

And McCain is going to fix the fire Bush has set with more gasoline? I seriously belive you can convince a republican that water is the worst thing you can put on a fire while their house is burning down.

If ignorance isn't strength: why are there republicans?

Although I am not not an American, I am deeply envolved though, since my son, a journalist like me, goes to the war scenes of Iraq and Afghanistan quite regularly, embedded into the care of US soldiers.
What he tells when he comes home is heartwrecking. Young soldiers protect ed his life during his researches. He has been in the Bagdad military hospital when young Americans came in and their bloody feet were on the ground, in their shoes, but there was no further connection between their legs and their upper body. They were just ripped into pieces by road side bombs.
He spoke with their mothers and wifes, since in a few cases he was the least person at their side when they died. It tears your heart into pieces when you hear their stories.
And now, as a moment in time, there is this chance to end this and come to terms with the worst mistake in American history.
If I could and legacy would allow me, I would donate for Obama's campaign every day. Since his vision is not only for America – it matters to the whole world, to ALL children, to ALL mothers and fathers whose phone doesn't ring any more and whose sons and daughters will never call them again.
McCain should know that – and as Obama said in his magnificent speech: He cares, but he simply doesn't get it.
