I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Obama Montage

Andrew Sullivan:

It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more unabashedly, unashamedly liberal than any Democratic acceptance speech since the great era of American liberalism. But it made the case for that liberalism - in the context of the decline of the American dream, and the rise of cynicism and the collapse of cultural unity. His ability to portray that liberalism as a patriotic, unifying, ennobling tradition makes him the most lethal and remarkable Democratic figure since John F Kennedy.

What he didn't do was give an airy, abstract, dreamy confection of rhetoric. The McCain campaign set Obama up as a celebrity airhead, a Paris Hilton of wealth and elitism. And he let them portray him that way, and let them over-reach, and let them punch him again and again ... and then he turned around and destroyed them. If the Rove Republicans thought they were playing with a patsy, they just got a reality check.

TPM's Josh Marshall:

I thought this was a very strong speech. About exactly what was needed. It was a strong speech. He made the case for himself; he laid out clear policy goals; and he aggressively set forth the stakes of the campaign. He made the case against John McCain while not attacking his character -- which makes a clear contrast with McCain's aggressively personal, denigrating campaign strategy.

I've heard a few people say that he seemed to hold back from giving the soaring speech he might have given. But I suspect that was intentional and I think a good decision. Meta-themes and tonality form the deeper structure of political communication. And the aim of this speech was not eloquence but strength.

Washington Post's Chris Cillizza:

The optics of the event - the first national party convention to be held outdoors since John F. Kennedy accepted the Democratic nomination at the Los Angeles Coliseum in 1960 -- were breathtaking. Television screens filled with images of Obama supporters dancing in the aisles to the tunes of Stevie Wonder and Sheryl Crow; a blazing orange sun set on an arid Colorado night as Obama prepared to take the stage. The speech ended with fireworks and confetti, as Obama, his runningmate, Sen. Joe Biden, and their families stood together waving to the crowd of delegates and supporters, at the climax of the Democratic National Convention.

Senator Hillary Clinton:

"Barack Obama's speech tonight laid out his specific, bold solutions and optimistic vision for our nation and our children's future.

"His speech crystallized the clear choice between he and Senator McCain. Four more years of the same failed policies or a leader who can tackle the great challenges we face: revitalizing our economy and restoring our standing in the world. I am proud to support Senator Obama, our next President of the United States and Joe Biden, our next Vice President of the United States."

Radar's Charles Kaiser:

It was the perfect culmination of a convention that was just as well-choreographed as the campaign that preceded it. Obama's speech was a splendid blend of stagecraft and substance. If you read the text, it hardly jumps off the page. But in Obama's hands it came alive, particularly here:

Story continues below

* We are the party of Roosevelt. We are the party of Kennedy. So don't tell me that Democrats won't defend this country. Don't tell me that Democrats won't keep us safe.

And here:

* If you don't have any fresh ideas, then you use stale tactics to scare voters.

The cumulative effect of the words of Michelle, Teddy Kennedy, Bill Clinton, and Obama himself should give the him a noticeable bounce.

MotherJones' David Corn:

It was a historic speech on a historic night--in a remarkable setting. A crowd of tens of thousands of Americans, filling an entire stadium in the middle of the country, waved American flags and signs calling for "Change." Never in the nation's history had more Americans attended such an event. Never before had an African-American accepted the presidential nomination of a major party in the United States. And the speech of Barack Obama matched the moment.

He connected his own history--the history of a not-quite-ordinary American family--to the mythical promise of America. His rhetoric soared--as usual--but it was tethered to reality: in particular, the stark differences between how Obama would approach the challenges the nation now faces and how John McCain would do so. Obama laced his criticism of the Bush years and the possible McCain years with a dose of populism, which gave portions of the speech a sharp edge. And he brought his pitch for hope and change down to the ground with a succinct description of policy ideas he would work for as president.

Andrew Sullivan: It was a deeply substantive speech, full of policy detail, full of people other than the candidate, centered overwhelmingly on domestic economic anxiety. It was a liberal speech, more...

Obama ROCKED the solar system last night.
his tone, posture and demeanor was Presidential in scope and substance.

I was a young kid when Kennedy gave his speech in 1960 and I remember how my parents were electrified and inspired,,,Obama speech echoed that same historical spectrum.

he'd be wise in his presidency to seek the collaboration and advisement of Bill Clinton and Al Gore.

Al Gore's speech was great as well.

Rocked the solar system? Actually, he didn't even mention the solar system, or space, or NASA.

Go ahead and watch JFK's speech at the convention. You can find it on Youtube. Then come back here and try to say that Obama's could even hold a candle to it. You wont, cause you can't

Oh, and while making such a great speech JFK did manage to mention space. He gets it.

JFK mentioned space because that was a hot issue at that time. People don't care as much about the space program as they do the economy. Don't you get that???

NO! you are the one who needs to acquaint yourself with Kennedy's speech.
you and your naysaying ilk can TRY, with all your might, to minimize Obama's electrifying call to the American people much to your own failure and continued failures of those like you.

Gosh, I'd call what you just said "grasping at straws".

While you're at it, have you checked into what your crime boss Bush has done to NASA?

I haven't heard McSame utter one word about NASA.

It's amazing to me how the Repubs label Obama as a celebrity as if it's a negative. His speech and the Democratic convention was flawless and the Repubs are cringing with envy. They could never duplicate this moment, let alone this week.
Will. I. Am from the Black Eyed Peas put it so candidly last night. "Who do we call on when this nation is in trouble?" in terms of a national disaster and when we're trying to raise funds for aid, we go to the celebrities who include actors, singers from all labels including country singers, other musicians and artists. Why are these folks being bashed for being who they are? Celebrities have come through for America when we've needed them most! Remember 911, Katrina, Farm Aid etc?

I have never been prouder of America than I was last night. We have passed a point in our history that was a long time coming. And people we are at the peak, we have a choice to make; PAY ATTENTION!! We cannot afford to keep going down with this sinking ship bscause it may be safe. Look at where we are today because we played it safe and stayed in the Bushes too long. America this is the time to tak eour country back!!! Stand up for change and let it be heard loud and Clear!!!!

I was privileged enough to see the speech live. I have never been jingoistic, but last night I found myself enthusiastically waiving a flag and chanting U-S-A. The audience was a true microcosm of the country. There were people of every race and age, in probably a way that was very representative of the country at large. Everyone was completely swept up in the energy, including, I think, the cops. They were almost all smiles and "have a good night". My feeling is that almost everyone wants change in this country, and for the first time in a long time, we feel we are going to get it.

We live in a beautiful country.

I caught great TV images.

Toward the end there was a shot of a grandmotherly African American woman and a younger white woman with there arms around each other's shoulder; it looked like the younger had her head on the older's shoulder, both with tears on their cheeks and hope in their eyes. It could be criticized as sloppy and sentimental and it looked WONDERFUL.

In many respects I must agree with Michelle Obama; George W Bush and Dick Cheney have made me ashamed of America because of the despicable treasonous things they have done to my countries reputation.

Last night Obama gave me an inspiring feeling of hope that the dignity of America can be restored and my love for what America once stood for reinstated.

I just love the idea that we might actually have two incredibly smart, principled, honest leaders in the White House who might actually help get us (and US) out of the mess we are in. And it's an idea that I will work to make reality.

Yes indeed. This is a choice between a guy who came in fifth from the bottom of his class at West Point and a guy who became president of the Law Review at Harvard Law. Not that I think of Harvard Law as some kind of intellectual Olympus, but the difference between the two men as reflected in their tertiary educational accomplishments could not be starker.

That's the key: he made us ALL prouder of our common Country in a period when Bush-Cheney-McCain, and their endless con jobs and slime machines and war-mongering and torture, have made us all deeply ashamed of America. If the Reagan Democrats can't listen to their union bosses and join the rest of us to fight to reclaim the greatness of America after hearing THIS speech, they will deserve the final destruction of themselves, their kids, and the American way of life they will have accomplished by voting for McCain and O'Reilly, instead of the Land of Lincoln, FDR, King, and Obama. It's all "on them," as Bill Clinton put it before the Texas and Ohio primaries, when he appealed to the Reagan Democrats to deliver the nomination for Hillary. They almost did. Surely these people are not so racist and simply lost that they will not finally, now, at last simply "get it," and see that Obama is at least as much "one of them" as Hillary ever was. If they are still blind, and deliver the election to McCain and Co., this country has truly had it, once and for all.

He will do it the same way he did and won the Democratic Presidential Nomination. With a well thought of and defined plan, by believing in his plan, having faith in it and sticking to it and not allowing people around him or what they are saying about him change his plans, by having the right people around him, by getting those people to believe in his plan, in him, in his ability to deliver and by getting everyone involved. This race is not about him, it is about what he can do for me, for you and for every single american. That's how he will do it. Have no doubt about this - becuase he will do it. He is organized and knows exactly why he is running for President.

Actually, the race IS about you and me and our heirs to the American Promise. It's like what we try to instill in young people - what is popular is not always right and what is right is not always popular.

Here is a letter I sent to an ardent republican who came to the U.S. during the Regan era. Obamas speech inspired me to wtite it:

I hope you watched Obama speak last night. How can anyone discuss issues if they only heard half the discussion? If you really love America as you say you do, the best thing you can do for it is to be well informed to protect her. You came to this country for what it stands for. One of them is the ability to speak freely and have your voice heard without being arrested. Use the rights you have to THINK! The love of country is why so many kids are fighting 2 wars right now. We are lucky our sons are not in Iraq or Afghanistan.
We are at a cross roads and the wrong decision will haunt us for a long, long time. The decision we make in November will impact us, our kids and possibly their kids.

Last night I heard Obama speak for the very first time. Do I have doubts about him? Of course I do. Never trust a politician, this sentiment is as American as apple pie.

This was altered due to the post limitaion
.

What this man has accomplished in his lifetime is more than most "experienced" politicians could ever dream to accomplish.

Let's see, Obama or McCain, Obama or McBush, Obama or Rove, Obama or Cheney, Obama or War in Iran, Obama or Big Oil, Obama or 4 more yrs of Bush, Obama or trickle down economics, Obama or jobs, Obama or Blackwater, Obama or incompetence, Obama or a mean old man, Obama or a flip-flopping "maverick", Obama or no civil rights, Obama or a man who has lied and lied and lied because he has no real case to be president.

You decide.

Last night was beautiful on many levels: visually, historically, and more. The last four days have once again proven Obama to be shrewd thinker. He was 4 for 4: right to put Hillary in center stage, right to allow Hillary supporters to vote for her, right to put Bill Clinton in the spotlight, and right to hold his acceptance speech outdoors before a crowd of 84,000. The next time the second-guessers begin to doubt, they should think back to every strategic decision Obama has made since beginning his campaign. I can't wait to see Obama-Biden in the White House.

I agree, it was time to set the entire primary fight aside. Clinton is a senator, albeit a very powerful woman in today's political world, particularly now. There will be no watered down health care plan put forward now.

However, he did not allow a vote. That was a sham. It upset many of us. But Hillary was dead right about one thing. It reminded me of old marital fights, where you get to the end and neither one has felt vindicated, but you just want to go to bed and put it behind you. Catharsis.

O-man gave HRC much more "voice" than he ever had to. You DID get your roll call and HRC got the spotlight once again when she ended it herself. He didn't have to let her be put in nomination and he didn't have to have a roll call at all. They worked out a COMPROMISE - to the winner go the spoils and I think O-man bent over backwards to "accommodate" and to let "other voices" be heard.

Compromise, Annie. It's an adult thing.

PumaAnn, I've been reading your comments since the primaries and caucuses, and in due time, I do believe that if you keep an open mind and remember what this country is REALLY about and what we're facing right now, Barack Hussein Obama will be the only choice you can rationally make for POTUS. I for one would rather have a man with new ideas that are sound enough to work, but not a lot of experience, than a man who is experienced in all the wrong ways. McCain is working with a broken system, and it's time for an overhaul.
