Chicago Tribune:

Just hours after Democrats formally nominated Barack Obama for president, his campaign launched a call-in offensive to WGN radio to protest the appearance Wednesday night of a conservative Obama critic on the "Extension 720 with Milt Rosenberg" talk show.

"WGN radio is giving right-wing hatchet man Stanley Kurtz a forum to air his baseless, fear-mongering terrorist smears," Obama's campaign wrote Wednesay in an e-mail urging supporters to flood the stations phone lines with complaints. "He's currently scheduled to spend a solid two-hour block from 9:00 to 11:00 p.m. pushing lies, distortions, and manipulations about Barack and University of Illinois professor William Ayers."

Smears unless they are illegal are part of free speech. If you don't think so, challenge in court in a libel suit. BTW it is also fine for people flooding the comment line at WGN - that is free speech too. Let it all play out and let people judge for themselves. But if you think people are too stupid to judge for themselves, you are a communist.

Its NOT criticism its a smear and the LA times is saying its criticism. HOw the hell can it be criticism to say someone is associated with an ex terrorist radical does that sound like criticism? Call it what it is and stop making it what it is not. If journalism have no standards anymore then we are really doomed.

Libel is the written or broadcast form of defamation, distinguished from slander, which is oral defamation. Libel and slander are legal claims for false statements of fact about a person that are printed, broadcast, spoken or otherwise communicated to others, and cause the subject harm. In the U.S. the only legal defense is truth.
