NEW YORK — Barack Obama's audience for his acceptance speech likely topped 40 million people, and the Democratic gathering that nominated him was a more popular television event than any other political convention in history.

More people watched Obama speak from a packed stadium in Denver on Thursday than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. (Four playoff football games, including the Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots, were seen by more than 40 million people.)

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by a little more than 20 million people; Bush's acceptance speech to GOP delegates had 27.6 million viewers.

Through four days, the Democratic convention was seen in an average of 22.5 million households. No other convention _ Republican or Democratic _ had been seen in as many homes since Nielsen began keeping these records for the Kennedy-Nixon campaign in 1960. There weren't enough television sets in American homes to have possibly beaten this record in years before that.

The convention that comes closest in interest was the 1976 Republican gathering, which averaged 21.9 million homes. That was the year President Gerald Ford fought off a challenge for the nomination from future President Ronald Reagan. For Democrats, the closest came during the 1980 convention where Sen. Edward Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for the nomination.

This year's nomination fight was another epic battle, between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Even though it was decided before the convention, viewers apparently were drawn to the historic nature of the first black man nominated as a major party presidential candidate.

Nielsen said that 38.4 million people watched Obama's speech as it was carried live by 10 commercial networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo.

PBS also televised the speech, but didn't pay Nielsen for a count of its national viewership. Based on a sample of several large cities, PBS estimated that an additional 4 million people saw the speech on its network. C-SPAN, which also televised the speech, has no estimate of its audience.

Obama's speech was the fifth-highest-rated, non-sports event watched by blacks in the last 11 years. A 30th anniversary Michael Jackson special on CBS in 2001 was on top.

The acceptance speech was a particular triumph for CNN, which clearly beat the three big broadcasters head-to-head on a news event for the first time ever. An estimated 8.1 million people watched on CNN Thursday.

In general, audience estimates for the convention show the dramatically waning influence of ABC, CBS and NBC in coverage for these events. The three big broadcasters aired only one hour of convention coverage each night, and it seemed a particular handicap on Thursday as its cable competition was able to show the buildup to Obama's speech.

ABC was the second-most network for Obama-watchers, with 6.6 million. NBC had 6.1 million, CBS 4.7 million, Fox News Channel 4.2 million and MSNBC 4.1 million.

The Republican convention begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Republican candidate John McCain sought to take away some of the attention from his rival on Friday by selecting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Proof this is old news. This thread received less than 350 posts in going on two days now. The Sarah Palin threads are over the 12K mark.

Doesn't take long to forget a speech.

Who is Sarah Palin?

You don't see any difference in a far left blog and a television set, and a presidential nomination acceptance speech at that? Oh, OK.

McCain explained to Sarah via phone conversation what it entails to be a Vice President.

Picture it: The Oval Office

McCain: "What was I saying Sarah? I forgot.

Palin: "Don't worry John. Take a nap. I'll take care of it." "Did you call Cindy?"

McCain: "Cindy who?"

C-Span all the way between 3 and 8 p.m. PDT on all four days. Then MSNBC/internet from 8 to midnight. The Republicans aren't toast--they're crumbs.

It is profound how you folks have to fight for relevance. I listened to all networks last week holding my barf bag, but at least I wasn't fearful.

The networks / news media was pathedic. Instead of showing speeches or covering the ACTUAL CONVENTION they just had pundits speculating on what was said or what will be said or what has to be said.

I don't care what Carvil or Olberman or Maddow think. I have a brain, i'm capable of thought just as they are. Just show the convention!

Any Democrats that are going to watch the GOP convention should do so on C-Span so as not to be counted.

Any Democrats that are going to watch the GOP convention should prepare with a case of red bull, three pots of coffee, and a healthy nap beforehand to try and stay awake during the days of meaningless talking points.....

"POW POW POW POW POW POW POW POW POW......CELEBRITY CELEBRITY....."

Gonna be a snoozer....remember when McCain tried to match

Remember the "Green Monster" speech by McCain. This is going to top that by far...

i won't be watching because i sincerely don't give a sh*t....but thanks for the tip...if, for whatever crazy reason, i happen to want to check it out, i will do so on c-span

McCain's veep selection is a problem for the Democrats. Face it, it will be close.

um, NO, McCain's selection is a problem for him and Republicans. Many of them will revolt in protest. Palin makes Obama look like Roosevelt. Mac passed up several other better qualified female senators and governors. Then the RNC convention will have all the drama Repubs wished on Dems because they'll have to compete with Hurricanes Gustav and Hanna, reminded us all of Katrina. The choice of Biden forced McCain's hand and limited his choices. But it'll still be close because so many people have racial hangups with blacks doing anything but entertaining.

Close?!!! A problem for the Democrats? Dude, this man just blew his brains out on national television with this veep choice! That you think this is a problem for Democrats can only mean that you're either high, or incredibly stupid.

He's done, son. You don't have to believe me. Just look at the facts. McCain is the oldest candidate in U.S. history, and given his repeated bouts with cancer, it's VERY possible that he might not survive the presidency. That being the case, just ask anyone in the military how they'd feel having to take orders from this hockey-mom nobody ever heard of who'd be their commander-in-chief should old man McCain croak in office.

The only problem the Democrats have is how to keep a straight face.

You're absolutely right, "gmlaster" !

"The only problem the Dems have is how to keep a straigt face." Love that! But let's net get into a false lull.

When we're finished with her, however, the GOPpers will realize their choice (NRA supporter, or not)..........from hatchet-man CHENEY to hockey-mom PALIN.......they'll be a slight air of embarrassment to put it mildly. And our troops in Afghanistan & Iraq are probably rubbing their eyes in disbelief!

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE BIDEN-PALIN DEBATE ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! !

Last night before I fell asleep, I marvelled at the devilish genius that is the Karl Rove strategy. Less than one day after this historic democratic convention, he has managed to take our total attention away from that and has the whole media cadre following the antics of John Mccain and the beauty queen. America is F*&^ked. We do not have the attention span to pay attention to the issues. They throw us a distracting bone and here we go following it like the sleeping puppies we are. SAD!!! I am going to stick with Senator O and Senator Biden and pay attentiontowhat they are doing. In the end , the news cycle will only strive to confuse you.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 10:34 AM on 08/30/2008

No, McCain's strategy will flop. Obama's speech and the 2008 DNC will be on future history exams, and McSame and Population 683,000 will be a footnote.

"We are better than this."

McCain's camp watched the DNC convention even closer than we did, and when they saw Obama's speech, the fireworks, fanfare, and most of all the expressions on the faces of the people watching, THEY PANICKED!!! They dropped their guts and threw this ridiculous desperation Hail Mary pass that totally backfired.

The media has the attention span of a housefly, but the rest of us are still riding high on that DNC convention. The only thing that's happened is that the resounding success of the convention has now been juxtaposed against McCain's suicidal choice of this hockey-mom for VP. Not Romney of Massachusetts or Giuliani of New York, but the fisherman's wife from Nowhere, Alaska. The only conclusion any logical person could reach is that McCain saw that stadium jam packed with fed-up Americans and lost his mind.

Don't let the fact that the media has been distracted discourage you. Remember what a bunch of right-wing cheerleaders they were for Bush when he first got elected? Focus on the numbers. 38.4 million viewers that were counted, at least 10 million more who watched via public television or internet that weren't counted, and let's not forget the millions more who watched overseas.

For the first time in eight excruciating years, America and the rest of the planet have real hope. America is not fu&^ked. The GOP, on the other hand, is totally screwed. We just watched John McCain put an embarrassing end to his run for president.

although most democratic observers have made favorable comments, an undercurrent of annoyance from the various special interests from civil rights to the environmentalists suggest that all who oppose another Republican administration are not yet pulling together.

Everyone should acknowledge that the 38 million figure was just the Neilsen on the for profit channels.
PBS estimated that they attracted about 3.6 million viewers for their coverage, and it is very likely that
the unfiltered C-span coverage could have attracted several million at least. Quite likely that true total coverage approached 45 million.

This was the first time I watched anything on C-SPAN, and many people I know did the same. We wanted uninterrupted coverage and no talking heads.

There were many more C-SPAN viewers, possibly close to PBS's numbers.

Ive been reading this collection of comments downthread................................

Goose bumps!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Reading about how other nations were listening and also weeping with joy, standing outside video shops in crowds.

It really opens my eyes to how important it is to regain our moral athority, here and in how we connect with the rest of the world.

Letting our profiteers be our only voice overseas is just not good enough, and it isn't my idea of a foriegn policy either.

This comparison of Obama and Palin experience is the next misinformation we are witnessing from the media. At this moment in this election its no longer about the experience any of the candidate has but
What is their position on national issues and policies?

After 18 months we know Obama's position on
1. The Iraq war
2. Fight against terror
3. Nuclear proliferation
4. The economy - taxes, stimulus, jobs
5. Energy. global warming as a national priority
6. Health care
7. Social security, education
8. Constitutional matters including 2nd amendment and torture
And many more
We also now know his management skills and style

On the other hand we know "zero" about Palin and worse McCain appears to equally know less about her.
This is all that matters, talk about small town mayor or governor does not hold.
