NEW YORK — Barack Obama's audience for his acceptance speech likely topped 40 million people, and the Democratic gathering that nominated him was a more popular television event than any other political convention in history.

More people watched Obama speak from a packed stadium in Denver on Thursday than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. (Four playoff football games, including the Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots, were seen by more than 40 million people.)

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by a little more than 20 million people; Bush's acceptance speech to GOP delegates had 27.6 million viewers.

Through four days, the Democratic convention was seen in an average of 22.5 million households. No other convention _ Republican or Democratic _ had been seen in as many homes since Nielsen began keeping these records for the Kennedy-Nixon campaign in 1960. There weren't enough television sets in American homes to have possibly beaten this record in years before that.

The convention that comes closest in interest was the 1976 Republican gathering, which averaged 21.9 million homes. That was the year President Gerald Ford fought off a challenge for the nomination from future President Ronald Reagan. For Democrats, the closest came during the 1980 convention where Sen. Edward Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for the nomination.

This year's nomination fight was another epic battle, between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Even though it was decided before the convention, viewers apparently were drawn to the historic nature of the first black man nominated as a major party presidential candidate.

Nielsen said that 38.4 million people watched Obama's speech as it was carried live by 10 commercial networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo.

PBS also televised the speech, but didn't pay Nielsen for a count of its national viewership. Based on a sample of several large cities, PBS estimated that an additional 4 million people saw the speech on its network. C-SPAN, which also televised the speech, has no estimate of its audience.

Obama's speech was the fifth-highest-rated, non-sports event watched by blacks in the last 11 years. A 30th anniversary Michael Jackson special on CBS in 2001 was on top.

The acceptance speech was a particular triumph for CNN, which clearly beat the three big broadcasters head-to-head on a news event for the first time ever. An estimated 8.1 million people watched on CNN Thursday.

In general, audience estimates for the convention show the dramatically waning influence of ABC, CBS and NBC in coverage for these events. The three big broadcasters aired only one hour of convention coverage each night, and it seemed a particular handicap on Thursday as its cable competition was able to show the buildup to Obama's speech.

ABC was the second-most network for Obama-watchers, with 6.6 million. NBC had 6.1 million, CBS 4.7 million, Fox News Channel 4.2 million and MSNBC 4.1 million.

The Republican convention begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Republican candidate John McCain sought to take away some of the attention from his rival on Friday by selecting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

I was in Singapore the day Obama's speech came on TV. He was covered by most int'l TV stations: CNN Int'l, BBC, Al Jazeera, Bloomberg, MSNBC Asia, that Singapore tv channel that I forgot. I was flipping my remote on my hotel and it was all the same coverage.
When I went for a lunch meeting a replay was going on (don't remember what channel was it on) and people basically stopped what they're doing to watch. Some women were teary eyed even and no they weren't Americans.

The world is watching...
The world is waiting....
For OBAMA .
At this point - after all the world has been through under the Bush administration - if McCain wins (without the fix being in as it had been for 2000 and 2004), the world will shake their heads in bewilderment even more than they do now.

Honest people all over the world know when someone is speaking truth.
The rest want to be lied to.
It is ashame that the republicans want to be lied to.
It's the only way you can explain it. Why else would they be in favor of what the bush/chenny cabal have done. All the wasted lives! and nearly 15 trillion dollars to boot. I guess republicans can't count? I know they don't care for the life of their fellow humans.
What a sick group of people republicans are. To willing to take everything on faith, to stupid or to lazy to look past the sound bite to find the truth. So afraid that they might have to help someone else, even if that person is unable to take care of themselves. They don't understand what the government is supposed to do, so they don't like it.
No matter how much help they had getting where they are, they always say they did it on their own. But almost no one made it themselves and most of them made it by standing on someone elses sholders.

So McCain picked a so-called experienced "governor" from a state where 114.000 votes get you there.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alaska_gubernatorial_election,_2006#Election_results

I'd have to convince more than 114,000 people if I wanted to be mayor in my city.

The Anchorage metro area has 360,000 people, half the population of Alaska. She never even had to leave town to win.

She's governor of a medium sized city, at best, manager of the oil office they call the governor's office of Alaska.

Let's stop pretending the woman has achieved something close to the 3.5 million votes Obama took in 2004, 70% of his state compared to 48% of hers.

It's not like there's no comparison, but the comparison is hysterical.

Get some perspective, PEOPLE.

The president always has the upper hand in Supreme Court appointments

We all know the next president will nominate 2 and possible 3 Supreme Court justices.
Even with a democratic congress, the president has the advantage because the president chooses who comes before the confirmation committee. Sure a democratic congress might be able block the most extreme justices but a justice does not have to be extreme to be dangerous.

Roe v Wade and other women’s rights is one justice away from being overturned

The court is currently split, 4 conservative, 4 liberal and 1 moderate justice providing the swing vote. Yes, Roe v. Wade and other women’s rights is one justice away from being overturned. 2-3 liberal justices are next to retire.
If the next president is a Democrat the court's alignment remains as it is today, with a Republican; the court will have 7 conservative and 2 liberal justices.

If John Mcain and Sarah Palin become president and vice president, the conservatives will be ecstatic. Why, presidents come and presidents go but a Supreme Court appointment last 20-30 years. Long after john McCain and Sara Palin are gone; a conservative supreme court will be the gift that keeps on giving.

For those who may say I am a social conservative, I would welcome a conservative court, keep in mind that the supreme court decides far more cases that affect women (Equal Pay, Title Nine, Workplace Discrimination, Sexual Harassment, etc) than it does social issues.

I think you are wrong on turning over roe vs wade. The gop does not want to overturn roe v wade it would take away half of their voters as soon as they did.
They only want R v Wade as another vote! Nothing more.

Oh you republicans think you can walk the walk and talk the talk. But 38m more than any other convention in history.

Republicans have got a problem. And picking a bi-got who thinks she is a femin-ist, and is anti- choice and anti-g-ay, oddly anti- polar bear, with no foreign policy and no economic experience will make up for the millions who are listening to and starting to believe in B-Rock?

Oh yes you republicans have a problem.

PBS here. Same reasons, plus no crawl or big band of channel logo across the bottom of the screen. As IF I wouldn't know I was watching MSNBC or CNN, they have to put this huge thing on the screen.

PBS here too. Because of the crappy economy, we got rid of cable, and the networks didn't show it because they thought Wife Swap and Deal or No Deal were way more important. So thank God for MacNeil News Hour that showed it in its entirety. PBS is worth every penny we paid in pledges.

McCain and his people not only they don't measure up to Obama, they don't even deserve to be in any elected office.

I get upset every time I think about this statement from McCain's senior advisor. Prime Minister Putin was correct in saying that the whole business about Georgia conflict is to help the GOP.

How in God's name ANY AMERICAN WISH AN ATTACK ON USA? ESPECIALLY, AFTER 9/11, to win an election.

I watched most of the convention coverage on C-SPAN because MSNBC and CNN are more interested in playing the entertainment game, endlessly debating amongst themselves about trivial and meaningless stuff. I never watch anything on FOX and ABC is off my list for good after that horrendous "debate" last spring.

Sarah Palin? That would be a no. Talk about not being qualified. There are plenty of soccer moms, school board members and mayors of small towns in my state but they would never be my pick for VP of our country. A 1 year governor? Not even a one term? Ridiculous.

Glad to know I'm not the only one boycotting ABC after that hit job they called a "debate" last spring. I flipped past ABC for a second and there was Terry Moran with George Stephanopolis, scouring over every nook and cranny of the convention, searching desperately to find fault with something. Moran should just look in the mirror if he's looking for faults. That man's eyes are just WAY too close together.

My wife and I watched the coverage on our local PBS station. I'm a bit of a cynical but pragmatic independent, but this final night actually moved me a little.
As a former McCain supporter I can say with no reservations that Obama's the guy I'm supporting for our nation's sake. I hope that if and when he's finally elected we, as Americans do our part to not only hold him to his words but that we also change the way we're living. Obama has convinced me that he believes we are essential for the process to work.
He's right.

Watched most of the democratic main speakers at the convention. Obama's speech tried to simply pull to your emotions. There were no facts in that speech. Let's cut taxes for 95% of all Americans but still pledge billions to another source of energy that's hardly as economic as oil, but will also cost much more. However, feeding money to foreign oil for the next "10 years" until we find a better energy source is OK, regardless of the simple fact that you can't revolutionize energy sources in that amount of time. "I will personally go through every line of the budget," Good luck with that one buddy, that's gonna take a little more then 4 years if you get in office. "Lets make sure our children get the best education possible" and "lets keep guns out of criminals hands"... are you kidding me? Yes, McCain stands for putting guns in criminals hands and making sure only certain kids get the right to an education. Probably the most generic speech ever given. Wow.

I suppose intricate details in an hour long speech is something a Repug could do but a Dem can't. Repugs need to get real and stop with the silly comments.

Obama believes we are all in this together and we all need to take responsibility to be "our brother's keeper".

McCan't believes that we are all on our own and that big business should rule the day.

Pretty clear where things lay...

First - How much does the military costing us to defend oil arount the world? add that cost of a oil.
Second - If not now, When? When do we get off oil? You would let keep us borrowing money from china then send it to the arabs then of to the terrorist groups.
Third - You are the type of person that would let children behind. Just because your were left behind don't be bitter towrds the rest of us, unlike you we do follow the teaching of Jesus Crist our lord. we love our kids. I will do my best to give them a better life than I had.
Forth- Guns, You worry about yours and I'll worry about mine. ONLY one president has taken guns from it citizens: George W. Bush during Katrina in New Orleans. Do some research.
5th - Facts : www.barackobama.com/ The site will show how he will pay for all his programs. Please compare to Mcsame's plan.
If you want to see a generic speach? Watch McCain on Thursday. I will sound just like Bush.
