NEW YORK — Barack Obama's audience for his acceptance speech likely topped 40 million people, and the Democratic gathering that nominated him was a more popular television event than any other political convention in history.

More people watched Obama speak from a packed stadium in Denver on Thursday than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. (Four playoff football games, including the Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots, were seen by more than 40 million people.)

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by a little more than 20 million people; Bush's acceptance speech to GOP delegates had 27.6 million viewers.

Through four days, the Democratic convention was seen in an average of 22.5 million households. No other convention _ Republican or Democratic _ had been seen in as many homes since Nielsen began keeping these records for the Kennedy-Nixon campaign in 1960. There weren't enough television sets in American homes to have possibly beaten this record in years before that.

The convention that comes closest in interest was the 1976 Republican gathering, which averaged 21.9 million homes. That was the year President Gerald Ford fought off a challenge for the nomination from future President Ronald Reagan. For Democrats, the closest came during the 1980 convention where Sen. Edward Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for the nomination.

This year's nomination fight was another epic battle, between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Even though it was decided before the convention, viewers apparently were drawn to the historic nature of the first black man nominated as a major party presidential candidate.

Nielsen said that 38.4 million people watched Obama's speech as it was carried live by 10 commercial networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo.

PBS also televised the speech, but didn't pay Nielsen for a count of its national viewership. Based on a sample of several large cities, PBS estimated that an additional 4 million people saw the speech on its network. C-SPAN, which also televised the speech, has no estimate of its audience.

Obama's speech was the fifth-highest-rated, non-sports event watched by blacks in the last 11 years. A 30th anniversary Michael Jackson special on CBS in 2001 was on top.

The acceptance speech was a particular triumph for CNN, which clearly beat the three big broadcasters head-to-head on a news event for the first time ever. An estimated 8.1 million people watched on CNN Thursday.

In general, audience estimates for the convention show the dramatically waning influence of ABC, CBS and NBC in coverage for these events. The three big broadcasters aired only one hour of convention coverage each night, and it seemed a particular handicap on Thursday as its cable competition was able to show the buildup to Obama's speech.

ABC was the second-most network for Obama-watchers, with 6.6 million. NBC had 6.1 million, CBS 4.7 million, Fox News Channel 4.2 million and MSNBC 4.1 million.

The Republican convention begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Republican candidate John McCain sought to take away some of the attention from his rival on Friday by selecting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

I believe more than 40 million people watched Obama on Thursday, 8/28/08.

Because, the 40m does not include those people who watched him on their Internet video, in order to watch the entire program.

Nor does it consider the thousands of "house parties" where groups got together. Evidence says McCan't is in trouble no mater what the polls say...

and the ex-pats like me, and the rest of the world who saw it on-line. Don't forget, most of Europeans feel they should be able to vote as well, seeing the US has so much influence in the world.

End the Olympics. They only cater to showcasing fascism: It has nothing to do with sportsmanship, free nation building. It is only about the money. Look at Germany circa 1936, Russia (Soviet Union) circa 1984, and now China 2008. What more can be said. Get rid of this awful institution.

Or at least move them back to Greece -- permanently. It's time to stop the madness of cities and nations spending billions of dollars to put on a sporting event while millions of people in those very same countries live in poverty.

I agree 100%. At the very least, have some REAL Olympic sports - run across the state! Swim across a channel! Climb a mountain! BMX-What? And the whole world isn't represented ; I'm sure there are people who can run rings around the "athletes" - alas, their country is too poor to send contenders.
What's more important - watching the nomination of the potential "leader of The Free World" and what he has to say - or watching sports?

The public tuned in to see history in the making. And his speech was a real boost for American prestige world wide. Obama is already having a positive international effect for this country and he is not even elected yet. The Reeps just don't get it.

The game will easily beat McSame. However, I'll be watching the Greedy Oilmen's Party convention just for the laughs. It will be wonderful in all its awfulness.

Boycott that boring convention. Decimate McCain's Nielson ratings. If you have to watch, do it online or on PBS or C-Span where they don't count toward Nielson's. Let's thank them for Operation Chaos.

Bill O'Reilly's survey just devastated my whole day! Grrr

Well mostly conservatives/republicans vote on the survey, but I do agree that Obama's campaign vs John McCain has been pretty terrible lately. This whole sitting on defense rather then offense strategy isn't gona work. I don't understand why they are doing this, when being offensive vs. Hilary worked so well. Team Obama needs to get it's head out of the clowds, and start attacking before they turn into another Kerry like debacle.

Alaska Business Monthly 01-MAR-07: We've lost a lot of Alaska's military members to the war in Iraq. How do you feel about sending more troops into battle, as President Bush is suggesting?

Palin: I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq.

"can you hear a landslide in the distance"

Here's the thing: I thought I heard one when Pappy Bush picked Dan Quayle. But even after the VP debate where Lloyd Bentsen ate Quayle alive, it didn't matter in November. In fact, it arguably helped Bush a little by ensuring that the foaming-at-the-mouth Bible-thumper crowd would show up on election day.

Obama's speech was not as good as Bill Clinton's. Obama speaks like he's it's a revival and fails to connect personally. Bill speaks to you like he's at your kitchen table having coffee with you. After hearing Bill and Hillary speak, I wonder how many Democrats said to themselves I think we're making a big mistake in nominating Obama.

clinton spoke under a different context. his job was to provide unity to the party and prove that there is no fraction in the party. he didnt come as a president . he came as a godfather. Obama spoke under different context , he was the party's nominee and he had lot to express to people. He is a great orator but his charm will be known only after few years. I am pretty sure Clinton wasn't thought as in the same way as today when he made his first speech.

I am not very impressed with Obama but he touched many subjects which I found to be true in lives of people around me. Sometimes americans forget to realise certain things until it happens to them. I am not blaming. It is just a fact. This is exactly what republicans exploit along with their vote caging.

today I heard a guy in the coffee shop talking about obama. He said he hated kerry but regretted it. Every election cycle I hear this, people who hate certain nominee for not possessing charisma or over charisma. Later when the damage is done, they regret it. how convenient. are we expecting to be pampered ?

Were you hitting the sauce? O's speech was heartfelt, and was HRC's. Bill's was bland and unreal.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:42 PM on 08/29/2008

Looks like you were. Clinton's speech across the board received top remarks, unlike Obama's. Not to say that Obama didn't give a great speech, but lets not downplay how amazing the speech from Bill was. He is still the best living political Orator this country has, and people like you need to stop disrespecting a hero, who is not just a great hero, but a great humanitarian.
