NEW YORK — Barack Obama's audience for his acceptance speech likely topped 40 million people, and the Democratic gathering that nominated him was a more popular television event than any other political convention in history.

More people watched Obama speak from a packed stadium in Denver on Thursday than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. (Four playoff football games, including the Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots, were seen by more than 40 million people.)

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by a little more than 20 million people; Bush's acceptance speech to GOP delegates had 27.6 million viewers.

Through four days, the Democratic convention was seen in an average of 22.5 million households. No other convention _ Republican or Democratic _ had been seen in as many homes since Nielsen began keeping these records for the Kennedy-Nixon campaign in 1960. There weren't enough television sets in American homes to have possibly beaten this record in years before that.

The convention that comes closest in interest was the 1976 Republican gathering, which averaged 21.9 million homes. That was the year President Gerald Ford fought off a challenge for the nomination from future President Ronald Reagan. For Democrats, the closest came during the 1980 convention where Sen. Edward Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for the nomination.

This year's nomination fight was another epic battle, between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Even though it was decided before the convention, viewers apparently were drawn to the historic nature of the first black man nominated as a major party presidential candidate.

Nielsen said that 38.4 million people watched Obama's speech as it was carried live by 10 commercial networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo.

PBS also televised the speech, but didn't pay Nielsen for a count of its national viewership. Based on a sample of several large cities, PBS estimated that an additional 4 million people saw the speech on its network. C-SPAN, which also televised the speech, has no estimate of its audience.

Obama's speech was the fifth-highest-rated, non-sports event watched by blacks in the last 11 years. A 30th anniversary Michael Jackson special on CBS in 2001 was on top.

The acceptance speech was a particular triumph for CNN, which clearly beat the three big broadcasters head-to-head on a news event for the first time ever. An estimated 8.1 million people watched on CNN Thursday.

In general, audience estimates for the convention show the dramatically waning influence of ABC, CBS and NBC in coverage for these events. The three big broadcasters aired only one hour of convention coverage each night, and it seemed a particular handicap on Thursday as its cable competition was able to show the buildup to Obama's speech.

ABC was the second-most network for Obama-watchers, with 6.6 million. NBC had 6.1 million, CBS 4.7 million, Fox News Channel 4.2 million and MSNBC 4.1 million.

The Republican convention begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Republican candidate John McCain sought to take away some of the attention from his rival on Friday by selecting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

In my opinion the DNC was the greatest live production this side of the Beijing Opening Ceremony. The sum total of the convention is without a doubt THE SINGLE GREATEST POLITICAL EVENT IN MODERN AMERICAN HISTORY.

Each song, speech, testimony, the Pepsi Center staging and the eye pleasing magnificence of the staging at the stadium, all fit together to set a new standard for public events. Even the logistical precision needed to pull this off is unmatched.

As far as speeches, they all fit together helping to make Barack's one for the ages. To single one out would certainly subtract from the whole. What we saw was PERFECTION and anyone who saw it will NEVER FORGET IT.

You're right.....all the speeches were like ingredients in a cake, Sen Obama was the sugar!

It was a magnificent, awe-inspiring spectacle. The world saw America rising from the ashes to reclaim her place in the world after eight years of dismal failure under Bush. We've just got one more hurdle to conquer in November, which thanks to McCain's choice of Sarah Palin is now just a formality.

Get out and vote in November. We owe it to America, to ourselves and to each other. And we owe it to the rest of the planet for letting Bush have two terms in office.

I watched Obama's speech at the Douglas County Democrat's watch party in Lawrence, Kansas. We had a crowd of about 350 people very happy people there. They showed the C-Span feed also.

I read a report that C-Span viewers weren't even counted in the 38 million viewer estimate!

I'll bet that more people watched on C-SPAN than on any of the commercial networks. I did.

The speech was a bigger deal in Canada, Europe, Asia and Africa. Add up those numbers and you have a historical phenomenon.

i can personally testify that a bunch of us who are out of the US at the moment, logged onto c-span on our computers and watched obama's acceptance speech. we were stunned by it. left completely speechless. and there was a tremdendous wave of warmth and admiration from all those sitting around us who have not always been particularly complimentary about US politics.

I heard that as well. I think that the DNC should package the best speeches in a cool fundraising pack for the DNC and Obama.

It's wonderful to see how much we matter in the world and to know that what happens to us affects everyone else. That's a huge responsibility that we must never shirk again.

It looks like McCain has used an approach singled out in Think Like a Grandmaster as a BAD thinking process. Here it is

1. Consider move A. Note that it has certain disadvantages.

2. Consider move B. Note that it has certain disadvantages.

3. Notice that you're running on time, and quickly make a THIRD move that you didn't have time to analyze, so you don't know its disadvantages.

McCain's move seems like a neophyte move -- we don't need moves like that from a President, and we don't need them from a candidate. Contrast that to Obama's choice of Biden, obviously long and carefully considered, not a wild impulse.

I believe the actual count far exceeds the Nielsen count. It doesn't include PBS, CSPAN (my choice) and the number of people who attended parties to watch the speech.

OBAMA-BIDEN '08!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

P.S. I hope you all are getting involve to register voters! He needs us...America needs us! ;-)

I'll be there watching McCain and the Republican convention. I'm sure that they will make some powerful arguments. I don't expect to be convinced, but I'm always open to reason and to changing my mind. The reason I'm for Obama is because he is the best choice, not because he is on my team and I want to win, or equivalent bs.

It's great that such a large number of people watched the speech. The preparation, delivery, resonance, force, and substantive nature of Obama's speech was amazing and unparalleled by any other speech during the DNC. His speech will remain etched in the memories of those who witnessed the speech (whether at the convention or via television) and will be viewed as one of the great speeches in American history.

How very devoted and loyal of you to the lame McSame party. Very admirable of you when so many of your own party have distanced themselves from BUSH and McC!

Why even sweet ol' Gordon Smith - Republican for Oregon is doing the same thing - running away from it all as fast as he can.
But I'm not fooled.

I WAS an Independent voter for years, but THIS year, I re-registered as a Democrat.
Prior to this, I could never commit to either party - neither were really worthy of it to me until this year - and like so many others, we've had it.

Because of BUSH and because of Obama, I am now registered as a Democrat. And voting for someone that I believe will bring our country back on track, voting for one that has MANY of our interests at heart, -- unlike McC who has flip flopped more than Kerry. McC is only in this for greed, money, and POWER and his selection for VP shows this as well as desperation.

Danoj, -- just don't count your chickens now before they are hatched. EVEN THOUGH you are a Republican, REALLY THINK ABOUT THIS before you cast your vote.

And may the best MAN win!

The Republicans will keep praising Obama's speechmaking just as the Dems will keep praising McCain's military service. It's a way of inoculating people against one of the strengths of the opponent.
