NEW YORK — Barack Obama's audience for his acceptance speech likely topped 40 million people, and the Democratic gathering that nominated him was a more popular television event than any other political convention in history.

More people watched Obama speak from a packed stadium in Denver on Thursday than watched the Olympics opening ceremony in Beijing, the final "American Idol" or the Academy Awards this year, Nielsen Media Research said Friday. (Four playoff football games, including the Super Bowl between the Giants and Patriots, were seen by more than 40 million people.)

His TV audience nearly doubled the amount of people who watched John Kerry accept the Democratic nomination to run against President Bush four years ago. Kerry's speech was seen by a little more than 20 million people; Bush's acceptance speech to GOP delegates had 27.6 million viewers.

Through four days, the Democratic convention was seen in an average of 22.5 million households. No other convention _ Republican or Democratic _ had been seen in as many homes since Nielsen began keeping these records for the Kennedy-Nixon campaign in 1960. There weren't enough television sets in American homes to have possibly beaten this record in years before that.

The convention that comes closest in interest was the 1976 Republican gathering, which averaged 21.9 million homes. That was the year President Gerald Ford fought off a challenge for the nomination from future President Ronald Reagan. For Democrats, the closest came during the 1980 convention where Sen. Edward Kennedy challenged President Jimmy Carter for the nomination.

This year's nomination fight was another epic battle, between Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. Even though it was decided before the convention, viewers apparently were drawn to the historic nature of the first black man nominated as a major party presidential candidate.

Nielsen said that 38.4 million people watched Obama's speech as it was carried live by 10 commercial networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, CNN, Fox News Channel, MSNBC, BET, TV One, Univision and Telemundo.

PBS also televised the speech, but didn't pay Nielsen for a count of its national viewership. Based on a sample of several large cities, PBS estimated that an additional 4 million people saw the speech on its network. C-SPAN, which also televised the speech, has no estimate of its audience.

Obama's speech was the fifth-highest-rated, non-sports event watched by blacks in the last 11 years. A 30th anniversary Michael Jackson special on CBS in 2001 was on top.

The acceptance speech was a particular triumph for CNN, which clearly beat the three big broadcasters head-to-head on a news event for the first time ever. An estimated 8.1 million people watched on CNN Thursday.

In general, audience estimates for the convention show the dramatically waning influence of ABC, CBS and NBC in coverage for these events. The three big broadcasters aired only one hour of convention coverage each night, and it seemed a particular handicap on Thursday as its cable competition was able to show the buildup to Obama's speech.

ABC was the second-most network for Obama-watchers, with 6.6 million. NBC had 6.1 million, CBS 4.7 million, Fox News Channel 4.2 million and MSNBC 4.1 million.

The Republican convention begins Monday in St. Paul, Minn. Republican candidate John McCain sought to take away some of the attention from his rival on Friday by selecting Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin as his running mate.

Obama's speech was brilliant. He is a brilliant mind, once in a lifetime thinker, politician, leader. Color is just a matter of circumstance. Great that he is the first AA but ability trumps gender, race, sexuality, and class if this country listens to its founding ideals and lives up to its potential. He is, by far, the one with the best ability to be Pres and to recover our nation.

McCain could win therefore he should have selected a VP that could lead this country in the event of his demise, illness etc... Oh my God what kind of country will this be? This woman has a degree from Idaho in Journalism and 2 years of experience as Gov. of Alaska, with 5 kids and a newborn with downs????? what!!!!! She is asking to be stressed out if she wants to be the least bit effective. I do not see how she should be VP over Joe Biden, she simply can not compete and how dare she accept that offer. This has nothing to do with her being a woman but everything to do with the state of our country and her ability. She is no Hillary Clinton that is for sure. McCain may as well called us all trollops. He is suggesting that women should be bare foot and pregnant and at the same time pretend to hold an office while he actually has Lieberman fulfilling the role.
Sarah Palin, congrats on becoming a Psuedo-VP Nominee!

I watched it on CSPAN as well. The other good thing about CSPAN is that you could watch it on your computer when it was convenient for you. I watched some of it on my ancient Dell Latitude and the rest of it on my Nokia N800 tiny computer.

Let's face it. Fireworks were better than balloons!!!!!! I don't know why some people can't stand large groups of people having a good time -- without causing any trouble. Nobody mentioned how attentive and respectful all 84,000 people were. That,in itself, is an accomplishment. If you watched C-SPan, you h ad a good time with them. If you watched CNN, FOx, or MSNBC, you didn't have much fun at all !!!!

We're a culture obsessed with all things Hollywood; we know more about American Idol, Brittany Spears Lindsey Lohan than we do about the America's Constitution. i'd say the decision was sheer genius.

Were you trying to invoke the "celebrity" meme? (I'd drop that if I were you; I don't think it's working.)

Perfectly expressed Liz. Could the Repubs even get 75K people together in one place? I'm sure they'll try to spin the celebrity angle, but all they'll get is dizzy. What terrifies them is that the grassroots are actually waking up and eager to get involved. No more special interest money calling the shots.

I watched on c-span at a bar with 50 others.
So we beat American Idol...my faith in humanity is slowly being restored!

So I figure we need about 80 Million votes to win (bush won with 62Mill, but this is going to be record turn out), so assuming that 85% of people that actually listened the man and the plan will vote for him, every one of us needs to round up just 2 more people that didn't watch.

Don't get complacent...you know the republicans will have some more tricks up their sleeve...there are billions in oil & gun money riding on this election for them.

Look for that big money to pour into the battleground senate seat races. Mcpow' and his vp selection pretty much close the books on UU's third term. There remains the matter of BigBiz's system installed at their great expense to get the WH to do their bidding for them.

BigBiz might be a lot of things but they aren't fools. They'll send token money to Mcpow and hope for a miracle but focus on preventing the dems from building a filibuster-proof senate majority. They seek to hobble Barrack's ability to accomplish anything and use that against him in the next mid terms and then again in '12.

Besides sending money to Obama/Biden and getting out the vote in our districts we should also send what we can to the dems in battleground senate races

There are a lot of people who watched on CSPAN and PBS. There are a lot of people who can't stand the commentators and interruption and didn't watch the speech on cable or network news, I was one of them.

It's ironic that posters on the Huffington Post shared information and made the recommendation to watch the convention on PBS & C-SPAN to avoid mainstream media pundits and were thus not counted. C-SPAN did a great job, IMHO.

It just goes to show that the count is an undercount. Who cares. I love C-SPAN because I can see the event for myself. The commercial networks have people talking over what's happening so you can't tell what is happening.

I think it is WEIRD that someone (like you, Ice9) would prefer to be told what you are watching, rather than seeing it for yourself, but that's life. There are all kinds of people.

I love the pundits too, but when punditry interferes with experiencing an event that is ongoing, it's a little too much.

I know this won't be implemented, but I wish that pundits would refrain from interpreting an event until after the event.

I think you are seeing it all wrong. We are all LAUGHING and shocked that the ol' Mc who turned 72 YEARS OLD TODAY, selected Palin!
By choosing her, he has caused what small chance he had for POTUS.

Research this carefully... his choice is a disaster for the Repubs really.

Palin is NO HRC, an anti-nut on many issues, an oil hungry DRILL it all who cares what happens - but what I find shocking is this woman has excepted this offer of VP.. really says what she is as a MOTHER and not in good light! Her recent son born only a few months ago has Down Syndrome.

I have twin boys that recently turned 5 years old. I've chosen to say goodbye to my career and to stay at home with them since they were born. And more so since one of our twin boys was dx'd with ASD Aug 2007.

I think it would be great to see a woman hold a position in high office, but just NOT this woman.

I think this person means "pwned", a term from the game World of Warcraft which roughly translated means to crush, humiliate and/or kill an opponent's game charater.

Just goes to show my rule of language holds true: If you can't spell the word, you probably shouldn't use it. Find a different word.

He actually said in his speech last night -- the audience sort of looked a little stunned. He said, "I am my brother's keeper." He actually said it. His brother lives in a hut! On twelve dollars a year! His brother lives in a hut, a shack, a six-by-nine-foot hut outside Nairobi. He is his brother's keeper? He hasn't even sent his brother a "Hut, Sweet Hut" sign to put up inside the hut. If he sent his brother 20 bucks, he's come close to doubling his annual income. He is his "brother's keeper."

Nothing like taking a line from the bible out of CONTEXT eh?

Indeed!
Now why don't you go ask Cindy McCain why she claims she's an only child when SHE has two half sisters... and to top it off one recently announced she is voting for OBAMA - but not because she's peeved with Cindy, but because Obama is a far better choice than McC.

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2008/08/20/cindy-mccain-has-another_n_120033.html

Too bad Cindy didn't pay off her sisters to keep QUIET as has McC has done with his first wife.

And his half-brother wishes him the best and asks please for no money. I've been to Kenya...there are people living in 6x9 huts that do no think they are poor. I have been in a beautiful tiny home made of cow dung and straw in an unbelieveable wilderness I saved my whole life to see...they loved their home and life and were so proud to show it off. Not everyone wants 7 houses to make them happy. After hearing from Cindy's sister and nephew yesterday, I REALLY don't think you want to have that argument!!!
