RALEIGH, N.C. — In a return to the public stage, John Edwards has confirmed plans to talk politics a month after admitting to an extramarital affair. But his wife won't be at his side.

A representative for the former Democratic presidential candidate confirmed Friday that he would speak alone at Hofstra University in New York on Sept. 8, school spokesman Stuart Vincent said. It was initially billed as a joint appearance to talk about the 2008 election, but Vincent said Elizabeth Edwards would not attend.

Dennis Goldford, a professor of politics at Drake University, said the rapid return to the stump could make it difficult for Edwards to overcome the anger of his former supporters. Edwards went into seclusion last month after spending the better part of the past six years on the trail _ running for president twice, serving on the Democratic presidential ticket in 2004 and pushing to shrink the gap between rich and poor.

"I don't think the dust has settled sufficiently," Goldford said. "You're going to see a lot of people who are extremely skeptical. It would seem that you would need a little more time."

A spokeswoman and an agent for John and Elizabeth Edwards did not immediately return messages seeking comment.

Edwards hasn't spoken publicly since his Aug. 8 admission to the affair, and no other speaking engagements before the Hofstra speech have been announced. In a statement issued the day of the interview, Edwards said he had made a "a serious error in judgment and conducted myself in a way that was disloyal to my family and to my core beliefs."

Edwards added that he did not plan to speak about the affair again. Both he and Elizabeth have since declined requests for an interview, and neither appeared this week at the Democratic National Convention in Denver.

David "Mudcat" Saunders, a friend and former adviser to Edwards, said the decision to return is one that should be left up to Edwards.

"He knows what's best for himself right now," Saunders said. "Nobody else knows."

The Edwardses are still scheduled to appear together Sept. 23 at Salem State College in Massachusetts, college spokesman Jim Glynn said Friday. Edwards also has plans to speak at the University of Illinois in October. Christine Messina-Boyer, director of women's health at Cooper University Hospital, also said an agent for Elizabeth Edwards recently confirmed she would appear there at the end of September.

Edwards' populist themes, which he carried from his first presidential bid in 2004 to this year's campaign, led him to a second place finish in the Iowa caucuses. But he never finished better than third after Iowa, and dropped out of the presidential race before the Super Tuesday primaries.

The former North Carolina senator was pushing his poverty message in 2006 when he hired rookie videographer Rielle Hunter to shoot videos of him on the stump. Edwards said the affair with Hunter began and ended that year, although Hunter was seen on the campaign trail up until the final days of 2006.

Both Edwards and Hunter have denied reports that he is the father of her six-month daughter.

UB told that John Edwards will fulfill his Sept. 26 Speaker Series commitment

By Jay Rey NEWS STAFF REPORTER

John Edwards is to speak at UB on Sept. 26, along with Karl Rove.
Former presidential hopeful John Edwards still plans to appear at the University at Buffalo later this month, despite keeping a low profile since acknowledging an extramarital affair.

In July, UB announced that Edwards and Republican strategist Karl Rove have signed on to debate the issues of the presidential campaign Sept. 26 as part of UB’s Distinguished Speakers Series.

Black said UB talked with Edwards’ representatives again Wednesday “to ensure he does intend to keep his commitment, [and] at this point, they’re saying he intends to be in Buffalo on Sept. 26.”

John and Elizabeth are speaking together at Salem State College in three weeks and I think that's fantastic! There may be tickets still available if you hurry.

I found this quite amazing video of Elizabeth Edwards in 2007. At about 4:16she tells the
audience that she and John are about to renew their wedding vows. The amazing thing is
their wedding original wedding vows in 1977, and apparently today are not what you might think.
They vowed to each other that they would help those in need.

Sadly, in the end Edwards was not that important because POVERTY is not an issue with either candidate in this election.

Kotexbarbie,

You are completely wrong. Very early leading up to the primaries, John Edwards set the agenda for the 2008 election with detailed progressive policies on health care, energy, education, global warming, the economy, the war, foreign affairs.

His fellow Democratic candidates were pushed to develop and set their own policy positions with the progressive policies of John Edwards as being the standard.

He pushed them to be more progressive and to develop policies close to his own.

John Edwards led and the other Democratic candidates followed, in terms of progressive platforms.

And both Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama mentioned the eradication of poverty repeatedly in their speechs after John Edwards dropped out.

John Edwards definitely affected the platforms of the 2008 election.

Along with Kucinich, Edwards was the progressive in the primaries. And he was a populist fighter. It's true that he introduced the most progressive policies first and the others were forced to respond.

But once he dropped out, Hillary took on the mantle of the populist fighter. Obama, aside from scattered rhetorical references, did not.

Paul Krugman thought Edwards' healthcare plan was the best of the major three, and Obama's the worst. I don't see that Obama has adjusted or re-evaluated his plan since then. (Of course, I'm with Kucinich on this issue -- I want Universal Health CARE, not Universal Health INSURANCE).

I don't hear Obama talking about poverty, despite the fact that the U.S. ranks 17th out of 19 most highly-developed countries in the UN Human Poverty Index. Did he even mention it in his stadium speech? Seemed like it was all about the middle-class.

I wish it was otherwise.

But eradicating poverty in the U.S. and the rest of the world should be an issue in this election.
Hopefully, John Edwards will be successful in bringing the need to eradication poverty
back into the American consiousness.
Did you see the video of Edwards visiting the poverty stricken in Uganda?
I think, now, John Edwards has found a cause to dedicate the rest of his life to.

Sadly, Edwards doesn't care about poverty, health care or his family. I do agree with him on one thing: he's a narcissist.
PS Did you select that screen name for yourself or did someone else choose it for you?

Thanks to themom2009, farrell, susanra, gba, and lioness39 and for getting it right. Edwards has an important populist message which should not be excluded from the fall election. That he's not a candidate any longer, and, like Gary Hart, another leader with personal baggage, may never again be one doesn't mean his advocacy should be thrown off the train. The anxiety of some of the posters here is disappointing, and certainly way overblown. How many of these freaking-out posters will go to a cnetral labor council picnic on Labor Day, r'rinstance? And how many are from flyover states where Edwards was appreciated? Acting like grownups who practice Judeo-Christian charity would better suit the circumstances than this lingering stone-throwing.

Just another sign of what a selfish egomaniac Edwards truly is. He has NEVER been liked In Chapel Hill, where everyone has long known he's a jerk. Any decent person would have known this could only hurt the Democratic ticket this year and would have canceled.

I just do not understand what makes ''The Edwards tick' If his upcoming speech is going to be a truthful confession of sorts, perhaps by getting the facts out there, his rapid plummet to the depths of deceit can stop. The 'truth' could be a gift freeing his wife, the Youngs, and even Ms. Hunter and baby and only then can the healing process have a chance. If Edwards attempts to speak on behalf of others, it will fall flat as no one can HEAR the words from someone so removed from reality. As someone who does advocate for abused children and the poor, the Edwards are just not 'walking the walk'. They did not rush into seclusion panicked about their bills, loss of pay, gas money, or even worry about their child care, unless they had to let go a nanny or two. The cognitive dissonance between what the Edwards' say and what they actually do is major. Do they just not see it? I hope they are at least reading these comments and 'hearing' the real peoples' voices and opinions. It may be our free gifts to them.

Most of the negative comments to this story are probably coming from Democrats. This upsets me and shows how hypocritical many of you are.

Last week, during the convention, you try to show that the Democrats are one big united party. Yet, you ostracize Edwards for his infidelity. While this runs in the background, there's Bill Clinton taking center stage. Thousands of adoring fans applauding, smiling, and agreeing with all his words.

Edwards is the biggest voice for those in poverty in America. Edwards could've spoken about that; he could've connected to the people Democrats claim to help the most. But you turned your back on him. And here you are again, continuing to bash him through these comments.

Don't pretend to be united. Most thinking people see right through it.

They might not like poor people, people with blue color jobs and people from 'fly-over' states. Pretty saddening for the possibilities for Obama to win the election

As much as I liked Edwards, now is not the time to make public appearences on behalf of Obama. He is a liability and the RNC Smear Merchants will have a field day with him. We do NOT need anyone who will divert attention away from our agenda. We did just fine without him at the convention and we will do just fine in the next 7 weeks without him as well. Sorry, I know many liked him as I did but I just feel we do not need anymore negative ads distracting the undecided voters.

I welcome John Edwards.

We need the strong progressive voice of John Edwards, promoting important issues and policy proposals.

He will give voice to a whole range of crucial issues facing the U.S. and world.

And he supports policies that help the working class, blue collar workers, the lower middle class, the middle class, the working poor, and the impoverished........all groups who need a strong voice in government policies and who have under-representation.

I say, keep voicing your policy proposals, John Edwards.......you were successful in pushing the Democratic agenda in the 2008 election to more progressive stances.

John Edwards led and the other Democratic candidates followed your lead in issues, policies, and agenda.

You are truly a naive person if you think that people aren't complicated.

Ike had an affair too. Did you know that? His driver was also his mistress. He still went on to become president because he was a great man in spite of his infidelity.
If you read more history you would know that many great men behaved badly on a personal level.

George Bush didn't have an affair in the White House bu the will always be known as the worst president in our history.

Edwards affair could have cost us the election. I am angry over that , but I have to admit that if it weren't for John and Elizabeth Edwards we would not be able to get health care and poverty issues on the table as we do now. Edwards to commend him , withheld his
endorsement of Obama until he got what he wanted--a promise to put health care on the agenda. Many lives will be affected by that decision.

I think I'll let God judge John Edwards for his affair. As for his campaign for the working people, and for health care, all I can say is ,thank you John. I lost my home once due to
medical bills.I would rather my dad had had an affair. It would have been less destructive to our lives.

Don't be petty and self-righteous like the Republicans. We don't need that right now.
