Newsweek:

When Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin arrived backstage for our NEWSWEEK Women & Leadership Event in Los Angeles last March, John McCain had just wrapped up the GOP nomination. Palin had yet to endorse McCain--she liked Mitt Romney--and as we waited in the green room, I urged her to "feel free" to make some news on stage. She grinned broadly--looking back, I guess it was a grin of the Cheshire Cat variety--and thanked me for the offer.

Once onstage, together with Arizona Gov. Janet Napolitano, Palin talked about what women expect from women leaders; how she took charge in Alaska during a political scandal that threatened to unseat the state's entire Republican power structure, and her feelings about Sen. Hillary Clinton. (She said she felt kind of bad she couldn't support a woman, but she didn't like Clinton's "whining.")

Send Hillary Clinton out as the attack dog on the perky ditz John McCain has plucked from tundral obscurity. I'm so positive her experience as part-time mayor of Freezybuns Alaska has prepared her to stand up to Hillary.

The "perky ditz" is as cunning as Hillary Clinton -- and will put our Senator back into her kitten boots by using her OWN words/actions validating John McCain and -- her hypocrisy in saying we should ALL support her to "break the glass ceiling" via her "18 million."

A comedic cat fight -- which, when Gerry Ferraro joins in, even more ridiculously -- will guarantee no woman will be taken seriously for another generation. That was Gerry's gift, when it would found out she misrepresented her husband's business dealings during the vetting. Now, we are watching Hillary's.

Senator Clinton should never have morphed her Campaign into a faux feminist whine. Now, we are seeing the results.

I love it. So now Hill is responsible for a Republican VP who is a woman?

I just love it.

Where's Biden? Inconsequential?

You guys need to move on. Hill isn't a part of this story.

I wish Hillary would go after her but I don't think she will.

Hillary's response was lame and disappointing. I expected better out of her. I guess she spoke her piece at the convention and that will be that.

Why? Hillary laid the foundation for this comedy. She CAN'T make any other statement because she knows she did -- and it is backfiring.

Hmmm I think this was after the debate with "THE CHOSEN ONE" where Clinton said that she was being picked on because she was a woman...remember that? Everyone on this site called her a whiner...then she was a b$tch because she came out tough again against "THE CHOSEN ONE". You guys have very short memories..scary.

A person in a visible elected position is supposed to be more diplomatic than the rest of us who are just the rabble and speak only for ourselves.

Calling Hillary a whiner on national TV should rule her out. It was a ditzy thing to do. She's not tactful, savvy or diplomatic. Not presidential material.

Upstaged and USED, making a comedy out of women candidates for our highest Office -- and the Office itself. Hillary's words and actions -- as well as Bill's -- are being leveraged as a baton pass by McCain and Palin, appropriately. Hillary deliberately laid the foundation for this COMEDY by acting irresponsibly and proffering a false PR narrative that the "18 million" were voting for her simply because she was a woman and trying to break "the glass ceiling."

So, ANY WOMAN WILL DO and should be validated, lauded and offered up...based upon gender.

Karma.

They are shamefully USING Palin's infant. This child will grow up someday, having been paraded around and shown off like so much evangelical bait. As a mother she should protect him, not exploit him.

If you make voting for a woman A CAUSE CELEBRE - and make gender the defining proposition -- as Hillary Clinton did after NH -- and rally the troops around another Bosnia-delusion ("18 million cracks in the glass ceiling" - whatever that is/means) -- and use THAT as some kind of faux feminist PLATFORM -- than ANY WOMAN can run from that platform and, by default we should ALL vote for Gov. Palin based upon the baton pass from Senator Clinton.

If we thought the fused Clinton/Bush dynasties couldn't stoop any lower, playing on the desire of all women to justly want a female to be taken seriously as a Presidential/VP Candidate -- and manipulate us -- is the lowest.

However, it must be noted -- Gerry Ferraro and Hillary Clinton have played along and laid the foundation for this perverse comedy we are about to see play out. Women on the R ight and Left should be outraged. But, our outrage should not solely be laid at McCain's feet. Hillary Clinton proffered the rationale, the numbers ("18 million cracks") and the false narrative he is leveraging as his case to women in his advertising and Hillary's brother's meetings with women.

Our august Senator is the architect of this madness -- and history will validate this.

I sincerely hope that the Obama camp uses this Sarah Palin sound bite about Hillary's "whinning" and juxtaposes it in an attack ad with her acceptance speech in which she talks of the accomplishments of Hillary Clinton. What a load of crap!

With Palin's whining comment, I am interested to see how she will react to the debate btwn her and Biden. I' ve read several comments on Biden going easy on her so that he is not seen to be beating up on a woman but as a woman I do feel offended by that statement because as Hillary said 'if you cant stand the heat....'

On a side note, I find it very odd that Palin agreed to this job, I cannot picture a mom with a child less than a year, campaigning from one hotel room to another, with a baby. Let alone a baby with downs syndrome. I have a 10 month old and cannot begin to imagine living in hotel rooms let along running a hard campaign. If most mothers are like me, it takes some super human energy just to work regular hours and have a baby. Then to have strength for all those campaigns.... but I guess she can afford help. And on that as well, isn't she the same one who made a show of nursing her baby in public. I guess her parenting/family values fall short of her ambition.

Absolutely insulting! An ex-beauty queen half term governor (of the nation's least populated state) calling Hillary Clinton a whiner? McCain's blatant pander to Hillary supporters will backfire. His selection of a pretty, young, trophy VP has eerie parallels to the story of his failed first marriage. McCain has no respect for women.

I do not agree with her stance on women's issues, but other than that, I like Palin already. A bold move on Mac's part.....and one that gives me a reason to switch parties.

What's funny to me is that Pelosi said much, much worse to women of the Democratic Party.

Hillary burned her bridges with her scorched earth campaign. She made it impossible for him to choose her. It took great character for him to overlook what she said about him and how she helped the Republicans again him, and show her affection and respect at the convention. I respect the hell out of him for that. He's a great man.

She was considered but refused to be vetted unless she was promised a spot. There are rules, and unless she was at the top of the ticket, she has to follow O's rules. It really is a shame that you feel the need to keep lying, even after such a lovely convention.

Gov. Sarah Palin has the nerve to attack Hillary, already, and called her a "whiner"?!! Well at least, Gov. Palin, Hillary isn't involved in a legislative ethics investigation called "trooper gate", and isn't linked to (the bridge to nowhere) Senator Ted Stevens. Gov. Sarah Palin, you and your far right-wing pro-life movement called "Feminists For Life" is going down! We know that Feminists For Life's overall goal is to overturn Roe V Wade!!

The C'lintons, if they're wise, will transition from dutiful, going-through-the-motions campaigning to genuine, aggressive campaigning, because if the Mc'Cain-Palin ticket wins, Palin becomes H'illary's chief rival to becoming the next president of the United States. Joe Biden will be 74 by the time the winner of the 2016 election is inaugurated, so I doubt he'll be a likely rival in 2016. If Mc'Cain wins, a VP Sarah Palin becomes a chief rival to Hi'llary in 2016, or even 2012.

On the other hand, in an O'bama administration, H'illary would be a good candidate for Secretary of State (if she were interested). In the early years of the nation's history, in the Jefferson-Madison-Monroe era, the State Department was a stepping stone to the presidency. An administration in which the threesome of O'bama, B'iden, and C'linton are the three highest ranking executives in the nation sure sounds like an appealing team to me.

But a Mc'Cain victory in 2008 pretty much ensures that H'illary C'linton will never be president of the United States.

We should NOT allow him to keep doing this to us. JM's candidacy is as fake as he is. We should know it, believe it, and leave it alone. We definitely should NOT "feed it". That's what they want. A monster only becomes a bigger monster if it's constantly fed.

Last night before I fell asleep, I marvelled at the devilish genius that is the Karl Rove strategy. Less than one day after this historic democratic convention, he has managed to take our total attention away from that and has the whole media cadre following the antics of John Mccain and the beauty queen. America is F*&^ked. We do not have the attention span to pay attention to the issues. They throw us a distracting bone and here we go following it like the sleeping puppies we are. SAD!!! I am going to stick with Senator O and Senator Biden and pay attentiont to what they are doing. In the end , the news cycle will only strive to confuse you.

The problem with Sarah Palin is... I like her. She has not a whit of national political experience, no advanced degrees, supports an agenda that would put women back in whale-bone corsets, the environment back to the industrial revolution, and education back to flat-earth theology, but... she's likeable and fresh and she will appeal to people who are looking for NOT-Washington. (Only an Alaskan -- or ex-Alaskan in my case -- could truly appreciate the story of her giving a speech in Dallas and flying home rather than having a baby born in Texas.)

She's attractive on a lot of a levels, but she's only one layer of make-up away from being another Katherine Harris -- and, you could argue, Katherine Harris is more qualified. One thing she is not, however, is an antidote to the disappointment Clinton supporters might still feel. That's like saying a bottle of tequila is an antidote to a broken heart -- your heart will still be broken th day after, and you'll have a terrible hangover. This particular hangover could last for over a decade.

McCain MISCALCULATED big time!!!

Hillary supporters were already coming home as soon as the convention started and they ran to the Dems after Hillary and Bill spoke. Somebody should have told McCain that the numbers just went from 50% of them against Obama to less than 10%.

Hillary Clinton supporters can see through this and will NEVER vote for McCain just because he picked a woman. McCain is against equal pay, was not for the sufferage bill, called his wife names and now wants to be elected President by females.

Take it from Hillary "NO WAY, NO HOW, NO McCAIN!".
