Replay Comes To Wrigley

The second-oldest ballpark in baseball, the last to be adorned with lights and the final one, begrudgingly, to enter the electronic signage age, Wrigley Field became the first wired for 21st Century technology.

Umpires now can scan high-definition televisions to aid them in home run decisions.

"It still boils down to the umpire making the decision," said Larry Young, an umpire supervisor who was at Wrigley Field to explain details of baseball's home run replay system that began Thursday.

And so it does, albeit with the help of slow-motion replay and other video gadgetry.

Wrigley was wired when the Cubs hosted the Phillies, but no disputed home runs tested the new technique as another era ended, just as one did when loudspeakers replaced Pat Pieper's megaphone.
