Though it was high in shock value, the Palin pick left bruised feelings among the short-list contenders who were not picked -- and infuriated some Republican officials who privately said McCain had gone out on a limb, unnecessarily, without laying the groundwork for such an unknown. Two senior Republican officials close to Mitt Romney and Tim
Pawlenty said they had both been rudely strung along and now "feel manipulated."

"They now know that they were used as decoys, well after McCain had decided not to pick them," one Republican involved in the process said.

That's what Republicans do...especially the current administration and those who strive to be like them...they use people and 'love' things. I think they mistakenly believe that it's the 'Christian' way...

Pawlenty must be a bit galled right now - he stuck through the darkest of hours with McCain on the campaign trail and then gets strung along long after he was out of contention, only to have a completely inexperienced person picked over him.

Maybe Romney could throw a wrench into this whole nonsense and start backing Obama. That will give the old man the ole "here to and what for"..Maybe Lieberman can go back to pretending to be a Democrat too.

That would be a smart political move for Mitt Romney, but I'm afraid its too late.

Boohoo, Mitt. As such a wonderful business person, you should realize that people are an expendable commodity used for a satisfactory business outcome. No different than you being used by your Republican colleague, McCain. What's good for the goose is good for the gander, crybaby.

Why is it so bad to just say "McCain is too old to be making these discisions"? He is more likely to drive down the street the wrong way. Get over it, he is too old! Not talking about it doesn't make it go away.

I think the way they were used says a lot about McCain. They are both honorable men with a lot of experience and at the very least, they should have been treated well so they could keep their dignity in tact. The first thing that all the people on Obama's short list said was they were treated very well. Hillary's supporters may not think she was treated well, but she certainly was not strung along and then dumped.

If you read into the stories... McCain wanted Joe Lieberman but his staff (including his Rove-bots) wanted a conservative - and younger. So the choice was probably narrowing to Pawlenty. But then I'm sure someone said "It's too bad Pawlenty isn't female..." and then someone else said ... "wait! Pawlenty (young, good looking, conservative cred, governor) could be female - Sarah Palin!"...

They were going after Pawlenty and going after Hillary backers - when you chase two rabbits you usually come up with nothing. What they got was not as qualified as Pawlenty and not acceptable to most Hillary backers.

And.. I agree with the prior poster.. when McCain called to clear the choice with his Neocon / oil / defense industry "investors" - they thought her record on oil companies is good - her husband works for BP - she is a great looking, eloquent front person for us - sure!

The sad thing is that there are so many low information people in this country that they will vote republican JUST because the see a woman on the ticket.

Since the folks still think that Saddam flew planes into the WTC on 9/11 and that Iraq has become a vacation destination, what else would anyone expect of them.

I want to see how much gushing Brokaw and Schiefer do over Palin.

Sorry Romney the Oil Companies want Palin out of Alaska because she taxes their profits to keep the property taxes of the states citizens low and to get EQUITY out of the Natural Resources they are taking.
