DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

"THIS IS THE MOST IRRESPONSIBLE DECISION BY ANY CANDIDATE IN AMERICAN HISTORY. MCCAIN NEEDS TO BE QUESTIONED AND REMOVED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
BEFORE THE CONVENTION. THIS IS A JOKE THAT IS NOT FUNNY."

Wake up - this was a coup! The Dems trashed their (qualified) woman and chose an inexperienced unknown... and the Republicans said - 'you think Clinton is garbage, that her nut cracker doll is funny .we'll do what you couldn't do." and they did it'.

Get real. This election will be lost if you all continue this teenage circle-jerk. Stop throwing rocks and figure out what we do when they start putting Rev Wright on a loop on mainstream TV.
It doesn't matter what attributes Palin has or not - they trumped us - so move on and concentrate on the win - but be clear - this woman represents millions of Americans and vilifying her and pulling out the 'iron my shirt crap (as the Obama fans did Clinton) is not a healthy choice.

Gov Palin is so similar to W that it's scary. She has little interest in the mundane aspects of her job, such as assistance for poor women, and families. She's not interested in the conflicts in the Mid East.
She doesn't have a clue as to what the vice president even does!
She prefers to simplify complex issues, and deal with them superficially.
Four more years of the type of superficiality we've had for the past eight.
Great, just great!

I deplore the tokenism displayed by McCain's choice of Sarah Palin. It's as though he said "we all (women) look alike". However, I don't think the Democratic Party or the Obama campaign has grasped the deepseated anger of many women, not over Hillary Clinton's loss, but about the way that we have been marginalized in American politics for centuries. They took no stand on the blatant media sexism aimed at Sen. Clinton during the primaries, and by letting it go unremarked, let women know that our votes and our participation in the party are unimportant. Yes, the Republicans' ploy is cynical, but they do have a way of getting to the guts of the matter; our anger, our fears, our most deeply felt and unexpressed emotions, and then capitalizing on them. The Democrats try to win our votes using reason, and reason doesn't always work.

So who are voting for?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 04:57 PM on 08/30/2008

Yes, but that is EXACTLY what we need right now. REASON! Americans have to say we are tired and scared of Bush- Republican strategies and policies, and are willing to get them out. We need to start making decisions with reason, and that will NOT come from the Republican Party. In the last 2 elections questionable votes were not counted before they were destroyed. Who engineered that? Do you want them to continue another 4, maybe 12 years. They may now have so much control, even reason can't stop them. Republicans have used the tax base to the benefit of their 1% wealthy minority. The Republican party has to be ousted. It runs this country like a dictatorship. You have NO vote in a corporation. You DO what you are told with no recourse, or Madison Avenue responses. You will lose your job, or be quietly maneuvered out. That is who is running this country. Your rights and privileges have been disappearing since Reagan. Do you want a father telling you what to do ALL your life! Statistics show Bush's party has had more secrets form the American people than any other administration in history. Do you NOT want to know? Do you usually hide your head in the sand when you get scared? That's what kids do. Seems to me, Republicans are either dictators or kids who want to be told what to do...or kids too scared to grow up and learn what to do themselves.

Wow how did he find such an big time cleanup hitter as Miss Wasilla...and the veto power she displayed as Wasilla's Mayor...maybe a big veto of an ordinance outlawing double parking in front of the AAA Sodas and Shakes in downtown Wasilla...This just proves that McBush/McDemintia/ is really not all together there or even partially there...With Grandpa and little Miss Wasilla the world is finally safe!

As a retired RN, I still remember women coming to our hospitals with botched abortions; either self inflicted or back room 'doctors'. Her belief is no abortion for any reason. I shudder for the women of this generation. Her credentials ring of application for Boy Scout to Eagle Scout Troop V.P. The assault gun says a lot! As a widow, I need one of those at my bedisde for protection? McCain is tetering on senility if he thinks this woman represents anything close to Hillary of the shattered glass.

This choice has Karl Rove written all over it. As unlikely and risky as it may appear on the surface, there is a diabolical brilliance to it as well. Palin’s role is to reel in the dissatisfied Hillary supporters. Her quote praising Hillary for "putting 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling" but urging former Hillary to help her to finally break through that ceiling, was appalling to anyone in possession of both a vagina and a brain.

As a woman, I am insulted that McCain would pander to females in this way. To suggest that women in general would back a candidate based on anatomy rather than issues smacks of paternalism. (Not unlike the Dan Quayle choice on the belief that women would vote for him because he was "handsome"). And this is progress!!!????

She won a primary in a state with 650,000. She single handed over took
corruption in the State of Alaska. How much corruption takes place in a state
with that population? She was mayor of a town of 10,000. She is the most popular Governor in America, yet none of us in the continental states have heard of her. She has a BA in journalism, but no further education or experience. She is the mother of a down syndrome baby. After the age of 35 it is not uncommon, after 40 common. She is 44.
McCain met her once, maybe twice and she is going to be the VP of the United
States to govern over the US if he can't (he is 72). He is definitely loosing it. THIS IS THE MOST IRRESPONSIBLE DECISION BY ANY CANDIDATE IN AMERICAN HISTORY. MCCAIN NEEDS TO BE QUESTIONED AND REMOVED BY THE REPUBLICAN PARTY
BEFORE THE CONVENTION. THIS IS A JOKE THAT IS NOT FUNNY.

Look for the "G"reedy "O"il "P"arty to encourage with great fervor the rights of states to decide whether or not to allow drilling. They will probably disguise this effort by using the words "off shore" at nauseum. What they are after here of course is ANWR. Palin is just a pawn if they get some Hillary voters along the way all the better. You don't really think McBush picked Palin do you?

Looking at all these comments, and realizing how much energy this is taking right now away from the INCREDIBLE last four days of the Democratic National Convention, where we witnessed huge enthusiasm and real reasons for it from all of the speakers and certainly from our candidates, I'm just starting to smell a rat...

Think this was thrown out as a "red herring" to take the attention away from Obama, but in a couple of days, McCain will come saying it was all a mistake and he'll pick someone else? It sure is drawing all the attention, just like he wanted.

I'd say to all progressives, don't let McCain steal Obama's thunder! Get out and help with with the campaign this weekend!!!

Everyone knows the DNC went well. It shows that MANY are shocked, in disbelief, or angry with this VP pick, whether Democrat or Republican. Charley Crist of Florida was on Larry King and stated he thought it was a great choice. Probably right - she was picked so we could drill in ANWR - which a lot of people are not against.

The GOP will bring up that Palin supported Obama's energy policy in June. Experience will be taken off the table by the GOP and they will state anyone arguing against her is sexist. I'm sure the PUMA's were Republican plants, too. (no pro choice supporter would vote pro life just because Hillary lost) This was a set up from months ago by the GOP. I just hope people see the bigger picture come November.

I had the same thought. I think she will find that because (pick one of your choice)

I can't take the oath of office in DC so I must decline.
She refused to go to Juneau to be sworn in as gov of Alaska

My baby needs me too much for me to be VP.

The first 'Dude" needs to go to the OIL fields.
He works for BP who say they are looking for better ways.

Do this mean I can't return to Alaska every night??

I can't let my kids live in sinful Washington DC.

Being a GOD fearing lady I can't go along with this JOKE any longer.

AND now is your chance to think of a reason Mcshane would release her from the travesty.

I think (there I go again thinking) this was to s_it on the Demo's parade and take NONnews time form Obama. How sad!!!

After she is released, Mcshane will give the vip to Rummy telling the wrong wing he tried to get a neo-con in but at last he must bla bla bla b_sh ...........

McCain needs to have his meds checked. He obviously is suffering dementia. OR perhaps he thinks we American women will just vote for anyone who is female.
I want my leaders to be smart and be wise in their choices.
So far, Obama has run a smart campaign.....he defeated the Clinton machine and chose a a good VP.
CNN showed Calin "shopping" in an Ohio State book store for clothes. Yikes! That made we want to go out and vote for her.

I write this to those who supported Hillary Clinton for President. Though I have admired her for two decades as another woman fighting for progressive women's values in a career field ruled by men and patriarchy, I, like many, believed Barack Obama was the correct choice for THIS election.

I have never respected Hillary more than the past few days at the Democratic Convention, as she proved what a strong, level headed, and righteous politician she is--by supporting Barack Obama, her party's nominee, in leading us all to a change in the White House that can only be better for all women than McCain's policies would be.

Now, we women are being treated to the latest act of misogyny by McCain. Just as Bush/Cheney tried to placate women AND blacks by adopting Condi as (barf) Secretary of State, McCain is following in their footsteps with his choice for VP.

It is obvious to anyone paying attention that Palin was selected ONLY because she is female--and she has NOTHING to do with the reasons Hillary was running for President. McCain believes those of you who supported Hillary are too stupid to notice that Palin, like McCain, is against everything Hillary Clinton has spent her adulthood fighting for.

Please don't fall for it! Dick Cheney, George W. Bush, and Karl Rove will be laughing all the way to their Swiss bank accounts and their land in Paraguay if you do.

I'm sure McCain picked Palin as a ready-made, almost palatable woman candidate that he thought former Hilary Clinton supporters would go for. With such secrecy about his VP choice till just after the Democratic convention, I bet he had three VP candidates lined up, ready to be THE VP candidate. Then he made his pick, based on what happened at the Democratic convention, and timed the announcement to overshadow any follow-up media coverage of the Democratics. Hillary showed such class, called for unity, and will be campaigning for Obama-Biden. Let THAT be the lesson for anyone involved in "politics."
And right now the Republicans are attempting to convey "heart" in their concern for those in the path of hurricane Gustaf. They may reschedule the opening of the Republican convention so delegates can go home and take care of families, etc. I hope the Republican leaders MEAN it, and are not just trying to look good to voters in an election year. Let's all get it right this time.
I'm voting for Obama-Biden. I've had a bumper sticker on my car from before the Democratic primaries. I agree with fiorastar's posting. Be smart, help Obama-Biden to campaign smart, win the election, and let the Republicans take the hindmost. Our time is now!

Not a chance that Hillary supporters will switch allegiance to this soccer mom/beauty pageant winner. Seriously, can you see this woman negotiating with Putin if McCain keels over? The Russians must be doubled over with laughter! It's embarrassing!

I do not know how the Republicans can expect anyone to take this seriously. This pick is ridiculous on so many levels. It would be hysterically funny if it were not so pathetic. Voting for this ticket should be a sure sign of mental incapacity.
