DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

....and by the way! ! !

...OBAMA never mentioned REV. MARTIN LUTHER KING'S NAME last night on the 40th anniversary of his 'I HAVE A DREAM' speech! ! !

....because someone might have 'let out the news' that...'DR. KING was a REGISTERED REPUBLICAN'! ! !...

it just goes to show you that you CAN'T BE 'TOO CIRCUMSPECT' in your actions, BARACK! ! !

...the American people are ONTO 'YOU' & YOUR 'FAR-LEFT, 'ANTI-AMERICAN', 'MARXIST' AGENDA'! ! !

No, "margaretdm" you are wrong and like the party you represent you didn't get it!!!!! He didn't mention Mr. King because the race was never an issue and trump card for his campaign. He mentioned Reagan, Lincoln, and many more who were Republican if you had a courage to listen carefully.

And please don't speak for American people, those of us with half a brain know what we need to do on November 4th.

McCain once again shows he hasn't got the clue, he does not have a best interest of America in mind hence choosing someone with zero experience self professed "hockey mom", and he was pandering to un-informed/bra hating women!

BTW go and read about "Marx and his agenda" before you accused someone for having Marxist Agenda.

I only have 2 cents left so here it is: if by any chance of the not so stretched imagination, if the McCain ticket did win -- it would prove beyond any shadow of doubt that we are the most ignorant nation in the entire world of both hemispheres ...

Well, there is proof that both elections were stolen. The voting machines, those that were working, were hacked. It has been proven and accepted by most of us. He was never really elected either time. Supreme Court handled 2004.

It boggles my mind how this could be possible. But, yes, you are right if McCain does get in with all the baggage; with all the incompetence; with all the lying; with all the cronyism; with all the extraordinary bad judgment of the Republicans; if McCain gets in, it will prove that America needs to get itself a lobotomy.

I so agree with you and the other responders to this thread. I try so hard to educate myself in all areas and see things from many different perspectives, both Republican and Democrat, but the facts are there and cannot be denied. If we, as a people in this country, cannot or refuse to see the forest for the trees or the polar bears for the oil or the scandal for the cover-up, then we deserve what we get (as long as there are not chads and missing absentee overseas ballots involved). I, for one, want to be as careful as I can to not believe the hype and the persuasion of someone elses slant, bias or downright lie, but let me be clear, I love this country and all it is SUPPOSED to stand for and I still, as warped and distorted and cracked and mangled as it is, would not want to live anywhere else on earth but in the good ol' USA.

Part 2 (because I was 115 words over! LOL also means Long-winded Old Lady!
Some of our military troops are fighting in a war we shouldn't be in, yet fighting nonetheless, without protest, because they were sent there to protect our freedom, whether necessary or not, and they are doing the job they were trained to do. We owe it to their efforts, wounds, PTS and even ultimate sacrifice to never give up on this country, yet never let people in power, right here, who could and would destroy it with their self-fulfilling greed and ambition, or even lack of good judgement, be in a position of leadership. That is a very tall order of responsibility for the American citiizens to fill, but fill it we must or we will go down with this ship. I feel and see the kindness in the Obama/Biden speeches, dialogue, background, history and plans for our future. I feel and see the differences in how McCain perceives the present, past and future of this nation. Now, with the addition of Palin, and the baggage she brings to the table, it is very disconcerting. Let us hope we will know the truth and the truth will set us free! Injustice cannot prevail when only kindness matters.

Palin pick undermines one of his main anti-Obama narratives. It's going to be laughable to hear McCain assail Obama's supposed lack of experience after naming the first-term governor -- only one-and-a-half years into her term -- of the 47th largest state to be his running mate. Palin lacks any foreign policy experience, and is bereft of even the two core areas of policy expertise that governors are supposed to bring to a ticket cant wait bring it on lol

It's easy to trash this woman as is being done on this board - it's easy to trash anyone. But trying to be objective and a strong Obama supporter (from the beginning), I think this is a smart move by McCain, smart for his election, although probably not for the country as in whether she is capable of being President given there's a good chance that McCain, being 72 will die within four years. Palin will attract a lot of women and some men despite her anti-feminist agenda, because let's face it, most Americans, even most American women don't like the feminist agenda. Obama (and we, his supporters) has his work cut out for him. This is not good news.

Do you even know what a "feminist agenda" is? Like equal pay for equal work;
Like control over our own reproductive health; Like being able to go to work and not being hit on by our bosses?
Nobody is fooled by this pick. He thinks that all the disenchanted Hillary voters will flock to the Republican party. Those stupid enough to do that can be counted on one hand.

I agree and McCain playing politics with our Countries future at stake is frightening. Has anyone visualized her as Commander in Chief of the Military , head to head with Iraq Iran, North Korea, Russia etc. 18 months as Governor of AK. and Mayor of Wasilla AK. population 6500. I hope women are smart enough to see through this. McCain says Obama would rather lose a war then lose the Presidency. He was speaking about himself and this pick is evident.

We're told that McCain really wanted to pick his old friend Joe Lieberman to run with him, but that Karl Rove and the rest of the elite Republican politburo nixed the idea, and told McCain that he had to take a conservative. And as he has at every step of his campaign, the one-time "maverick" sold out to the venal, icy core of the Republican leadership, and acquiesced by selecting Palin. Palin is really a Republican after Rove's heart - she's a product of the party that produced the indicted Ted Stevens and ethically tarred Don Young, and she's embroiled in a Troopergate scandal of her own, with state investigators looking at serious allegations that Palin abused her office by pressuring the state Public Safety Commissioner to fire "an Alaska state trooper involved in a rough divorce from Palin's sister." Sounds like a woman after Karl Rove's heart

If I was one of those angry Hillary supporters who were so bent out of shape that they threatened to jump the ship and go vote for McCain I WOULD BE PRETTY INSULTED right now. Apparently McCain was listening "girls" and obliged. Another words "he got it" hence his pick of a candidate with the right "organ"! So go on cast your worthless votes. I (a woman) am ducking and running away from that 18 MILLION CRACKS on that delusional ceiling fearing for my life!!!! My ceiling didn't need a crack, I didn't need the fear of implosions to make me feel like a "woman" with God given "Right"!

Oh in regards to the Republican mantra of "Family Value"; I guess it is OK to put your political career over your "special need" child! But as the politicians are few steps ahead of us and Republicans are shameless and more callus in general in that regards, McCain camp is going to play their trump card explaining that "family value gap" by emphasizing on Palin's "Pro-Life" views! What does that translates to? Unfortunately Mrs. Palin's youngest child with "Down Syndrome" will be a poster child! I hope I am wrong, can McCain camp stoop that low?

REPUBLICAN HITCHENS QUOTE ON CNN WE DON'T KNOW MUCH ABOUT HER

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:44 PM on 08/29/2008

Well, we know this from a large environmental group this afternoon: “Sarah Palin, whose husband works for BP (formerly British Petroleum), has repeatedly put special interests first when it comes to the environment. In her scant two years as governor, she has lobbied aggressively to open up the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge to drilling, pushed for more drilling off of Alaska’s coasts, and put special interests above science. Ms. Palin has made it clear through her actions that she is unwilling to do even as much as the Bush administration to address the impacts of global warming. Her most recent effort has been to sue the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to remove the polar bear from the endangered species list, putting Big Oil before sound science. As unbelievable as this may sound, this actually puts her to the right of the Bush administration.

“This is Senator McCain’s first significant choice in building his executive team and it’s a bad one. It has to raise serious doubts in the minds of voters about John McCain’s commitment to conservation, to addressing the impacts of global warming and to ensuring our country ends its dependency on oil.”

What didn't we learn? Why Sarah Palin should be considered ready to take over the presidency. We heard nothing about her foreign policy views - if she has any. We learned practically nothing about domestic issues. She said nothing that spoke directly to the interests of voters of Ohio specifically. It was as if she didn't know how to reach out to people outside her own state.

Heck, we didn't even learn how large the crowd was in Dayton. I wonder if the McCain campaign wanted to keep it that way

Oh please, please someone tell me the PUMAs are not that stupid. Please. I don't get it. If they wanted HRC as the first female president so much, why would they vote for someone who could steal that title from her? We all know McCain isn't in the best health, and is 72. He could die or become disabled, making Palin President. If these PUMAs are soooo loyal to Hillary, why would they want it to be another woman? Hillary is no spring chicken but she is still young enough to run again in 2012 or 2016. Shouldn't they want a woman-free ticket until then?

Malloy - I am loving it, just laughing my tail off, and loving it!!! I always suspected McCain was a fool, but having an honest, hard-working woman like Palin with actual morals will only foul up McCains
agendas. Does he actually think he will be able to dazzle that woman with his experience and good
ol boy persona? He is in for a suprise. IF it gets that far and into the White House, that woman will not hesitate to cry foul or at least let someone in straight-standing know that all that covertion for the sake of the "little" people. She will see right through all that crap. I am a dem, but I like her and she
is just not the one to jump on any program. I will bet that when McCain made this proposal, she was
just full of questions, real questions. "What should I wear to the convention?" was not one of them.
This should be interesting. I think McCain is making an attempt, a desperate one, to look like a forward-thinker, however, he has no idea what he is doing, NONE.

Goodness, Obama was soooo right when he said McCain just doesn't "get it"!!!
He thinks the PUMAS will vote for a gun toting, anti-choice and anti-gay just because she is a woman. Even tho whe doesn't stand up for anything we believe in????

McCain made this move for one reason and one reason only.
To try to get more of the women's vote - since Obama didn't pick HRC or Sebelius...

I'm confident that she doesn't have the experience deemed necessary by the GOP to be VP, nor does she have any name recognition. The only thing she brings to the table is the fact that she's female.
