DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

This is an admission from the republicans that they are likely to lose the election. The choice of Palin for VP is an all or nothing decision. What have they to lose?

An INCREDIBLE CHOICE! ! ! An ALL-AMERICAN WOMAN in a SKIRT! ! !A 44 year old mother of 5 children...the last one being a Down-Syndrome child. A gun-toting, fisherwoman, 'hockey mom',and individual that believes we should be DRILLING IN ALASKA! ! ! and proving that the 'Gore-guru', 'self- serving' falsehoods of 'fiscal-fear-mongering' concerning misrepresentations of 'global warming' ARE NOT 'man-made'! ! ! Also...a self-proclaimed maverick who ran for Governor of the State of Alaska and won over a Democratic Governor who excelled in the 'good ole boy' LIBERAL CRONEYISM that has been the DOWNFALL OF OUR 'LIBERAL' AGENDA leadership in the past 16 years....between the Presidency of
Bill Clinton and the Democratically STALEMATED CONGRESS that has CRIPPLED OUR COUNTRY since '9-11'. She's THE 'PERFECT' RUNNING-MATE for this country and John McCain who's 72nd birthday is today! ! ! What a birthday present for ALL OF US! ! ! HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JOHN McCAIN! ! !....and many more! ! !

You sure take a lot of words to say that you endorse her philosophy of

"Rape and ravage the flora and fauna of the Earth - and the Earth itself - to enrich me, for everything was created for me. And to hell with tomorrow; I brought my children into this world as is my duty - that is all that they should expect of me."

Oh, I think I may have caught one of the new portraits they plan to use for Senator McCain. Gov Palin just referred to him as "John F. McCain".

lollll...don't worry, P.U.M.A...it will feel OH SO MUCH BETTER when it is another woman who strips you of your reproductive rights.

I can see it now:

McCain Executive Order #1: Any medical personnel who assist in providing abortions or any other form of birth control shall be placed on the terrorist "no fly" list, be subjected to annual and thorough tax audits, be denied Federal funding of any sort....

lolll...old Bush set that "Executive Orders'R'Us" precedent, ya know...

This was not McCain's first choice just in case you did not know!

My family live near Dayton and the GOP had to bus in people to attend the rally.

This is like putting me on the ticket with my experience in government. And if he keel over, the country would be sol.

She appear to be a nice lady. Not sure if I feel worst for her or the country.

Well, gee... she's governed as many people as, the Mayor of Ft. Worth, TX .... for some months now. After his ads questioning Senator Obama's twenty years of public service, I wonder just why McCain thinks she's ready to lead. He'll be 73 soon.. it's not an unreasonable question. .

She's right wing on issues... but anti-corruption, odd for a Republican, but mates with McCain's stance... at least one version of McCain, I'm not sure what Rev # we're on now.

I'm shocked as some readers here, I suppose. I think McCain had a strategy here you can read. If confident, go for a "do no harm" guy like Gov. Tim Pawlenty. If he worried about the economy, maybe Mitt Romney, despite the fact he can't stand the guy. And, if he really felt the heat, he would go for the long shot. I guess the recent DNC convention has him spooked! I think the announcement has to be real... if he winds up with a different VP next week, it wouldn't be seen as anything other than the RNC tugging on puppet strings to make him change his mind.

Clearly a shot for Hillary voters, but I don't see it working. Maybe I'm nuts, Hillary made it by being in public service of one form or another for the last 35 years. She earned it and fought for it. This could easily back-fire on McCain, pushing away any fence sitting Hillary supporters.

Senator McCain's main talking points, the reasons for picking him over Senator Obama, have been experience and judgment. This decision would seem to take those off the table. So now what will it be, "I have a woman on my ticket!".

Someone above listed her electoral accomplishments; however they neglected her one term on City Council.

CARE TO ELABORATE I'LL WAIT BECAUSE SHE SURE DIDN'T GIVE ANY ? What didn't we learn? Why Sarah Palin should be considered ready to take over the presidency. We heard nothing about her foreign policy views - if she has any. We learned practically nothing about domestic issues. She said nothing that spoke directly to the interests of voters of Ohio specifically. It was as if she didn't know how to reach out to people outside her own state.

Heck, we didn't even learn how large the crowd was in Dayton. I wonder if the McCain campaign wanted to keep it that way

HER HUSBAND IS CONNECTED TO BIG OIL IN ALASKA , So it's official - John McCain has thrown a Hail Mary and tapped Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate. The trad med types are ga-ga about what a game-changing choice Palin is. And they're right. It is a game-changer. The Palin pick takes a race already leaning toward Obama and pushes it further into his corner.

Why? Because Sarah Palin is the most unqualified VP nominee in modern history, with the possible exception of Admiral Stockdale. ,
She's worse than Quayle. well just a midget better than quale but you get the point she nothing more than a gimmick ,- she's a big corrupt wheel in Alaska's big corrupt Republican Party, arguably the most corrupt political apparatus in the United States.

This is insane. What woman wants her children's safety in the hands of a woman with no foreign policy credentials, who is virtually unknown, completely untested, just someone who happens to have been elected governor of a state with a small human population which is in complete darkness for 25% of the year? If McCain, 72 years old today and not the healthiest of individuals, dies then Palin will be Commander-in-Chief!! SOS! SOS!

McCain must have felt that he had to solidify Alaska with its 3 electoral votes.
She mirrors his flip -flops.
Once McCain would criticize Bush......Now they're buddies.
Once Palin would criticize Ted Stevens......Now they're buddies.
I'm sure she'll make a great President when the time comes.

Let's see if I got this correct. Palin has been Governor for 18 months and before that mayor of a small town. She has zero foreign policy experience, against a womans right to choose and under investigation by the Alaska Legislature. GOLLY McCain, great choice and good judgement.

So Palin has FIVE children, and her youngest has Down's Syndrome? Exactly how much quality time can Sarah devote to her very young Down's Syndrome child and her other four children should she become vice-president of the United States? OR how much total attention can she pay to running the entire country should something happen to John McCain? Realistically, something HAS to be compromised in quality...

EXCELLENT points, SickOfSpin. Juggling five children - one with special needs - with running the great United States of America at the same time is a bit much for anyone.
