DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

Mrs. Palin was PRAISED for NOT ABORTING her newest child that suffers from DOWN SYNDROME - BUT, WHO IS GOING TO RAISE THIS CHILD? A mother of FIVE and one with special needs - her family obviously comes LAST. Did you notice the family photos did not include the newest member of the family? How can she face her challenges at home while facing the challenges of the Middle East?

I'm sorry but McCain is 71-years old... and anything can happen to him, what is her foreign policy experience? You pick a VP because she's a woman! I just think Biden will tear her apart....until we see her speak, I'm just think McCain isn't strong on thinking long tern and really for us as Americans. She's pro-life, pro-gun and against gay marriage. If all the gay supporters out there who were for Hillary need to get on board now because your rights are about to be taken away!!! Folks wake up!

I agree totally! I am a gay man in Texas and we don't want four more years of bigots running our country! Obama is the first presidential candidate to speak of treating gays as equals in those areas that matter most to me....namely, equal benefits, employment discrimination protection, the right to visit our life partner in hospital, etc. I am sure that as president, Obama will be compassionate to all peoples.

I think McCain is sicker than he has led on to the american people. In his mind if he can somehow pull this off, he wants to be the ultimate maverick, knowing full well this woman ain't ready to be president. He could have picked Hutchinson from Texas, or Condi, I know Romney & Pawlenty is having a hard time with this pick. McCain is a womanizer and he likes the idea of looking at this woman everyday. Bold move, big mistake on his part. Women are a lot smarter than he gives them credit for.

You can't be serious--how many women will be duped by this? That John McCain chose his VP pick SOLELY on the basis of her plumbing? She has NO foreign policy experience, is currently being investigated for ethics violations and says that drilling in ANWR is okay...oh, by the way, her husband works for BP oil...

This is an affront and women are too smart to see through this transparency.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 12:11 PM on 08/29/2008

Are you so sure all women will feel that way? There are black Republicans who say they will vote for Obama solely because they want to see a black man in the White House. You don't think there are at least *some* women out there who will do the same for a female VP and possible President?

Look how many votes decided the election in 2000. A few hundred thousand votes could easily decide this thing. This move could backfire (Palin is young, inexperienced, etc.), but it could also put McCain in the White House. Not everyone decides their vote based on logical analysis of the facts. In fact, in my opinion, most voters do not.

I don't know anything about Gov Palin, I am sure she is fine as governor up there and I think she is pretty popular which again is fine for Alaska given their political corruption problems they have to fix they need someone they can rally around.

However Alaska is a state of some 700,000 people and this women is being elevated to within one step of the presidency and was mayor of a town of 8500 PEOPLE TWO YEARS ago. Folks, McCain is 72 today and God forbid if he were to become President and develop a serious chronic health problem. This women will become President as a result. The mainstream media and the Republicans want to talk about Obama's inexperience but this has to take the cake. I don't agree with everything about Biden, but I know for sure he is ready to be President if he had to. Alaska contains 0.2% of the nation's population and is geographically disconnected from the rest of the US by thousands of miles. This woman lives and works up there, she has NO CONNECTION and NO EXPERIENCE with what is going on with the 99%+ rest of us.

To anyone who is supporting McCain you better start asking yourself about the judgment of this man regardless of his views on the issues why in the world he would pick someone like this If Gov Palin were Democrat and Obama picked her I would still be equally shocked. JIMHO

I'm sure a fact-finding committee found that she was the best qualified woman in the entire republican party to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

it's the top of the ticket that counts...and in foreign policy, national security, anti terrorism, and commanding the military, mccain is clearly favored by the voters

Speak for yourself, meanguy....I am a voter. I am a white, woman over 50 and I clearly do not favor McCain on any policy. I agree with Gen. Clark that even though McCain is to be commended for his time in Viet Nam (never mind the fact that with both his father and grandfather being admirals, and the draft being in force back then, he didn't have much choice ) that does not automatically qualify him to be commander in chief. Barack Obama has been my choice all along, but If Hillary had received the nomination, I would have voted for her. Obama received the nomination. I will gladly and proudly vote for him.

First of all, he needed to find a non-millionaire in the Republican Party and secondly, he needed to find someone who would agree to punching a ticket on SS McTanic. That's an exceptionally short list.

This is like putting Bob Dole and Dan Quayle on the same ticket!

If Gov. Palin is under investigation for some alleged improprieties for "the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law a state trooper" what is it she did that the Republican-controlled state legislature would want such an investigation? Is she tied in with Sen. Stevens in taking money from oil lobbyists?

Something smells fishy here. What's the problem with Palin's former brother-in-law, a state trooper? What did he supposedly do or not do, that would cause Palin to fire the public safety commissioner? Or what does her brother-in-law know that Palin would want him fired?

Or, is it what's the problem with Palin and the public safety director? Or, the Republicans in the state legislature?

Surely this couldn't be another Republican sex scandal brewing, could it? Money and sex perhaps--two likely suspects.

It ought to be interesting watching this unfold.

Palin's husband works for BP Oil, go figure. McCain is trying to dupe americans to go for this farce of a pick. This woman has got 5 kids, how in the world can she be a good mother and a good vice president. 5 kids, something is gonna go lacking and her last baby is young. McCain likes the way Palin looks, and Obama scared him last night. McCain turned 72 years old today and has fought several bouts with cancer………now you tell me? Is this woman ready to be president? I don't think so. This woman is only 44 years, this woman aint no Hillary.

Fox has gone nuts for the last hour talking about her youngest child having Downs Syndrome, apparently making the parallel that she did not abort him even though she was told in advance that he would have the condition. What a disgusting discussion.

This is a shocker to me. Palin, governer for less than two years. Palin, under investigation in her own state. Palin, no federal level experience. Palin, experienced with Alaskan budget management less than two years. Palin a woman to draw Hillary supporters when she is the Anti - Hillary in all aspects not the least of which are experience, and policy stances.

The only thing I see here, is that she will galvanize the women who are anti - choice. At the same time, she may draw the ire and galvinize the women's vote who are pro - choice, and pro - HRC.

Hillary Clinton is worlds above this women in every way I can think of.

I don't understand. Still it is a positive step for the Republican party to finally recognize a women on the national ticket. Another 50 years they may recognize a minority.

Can anyone else make sense of this??

I can't imagine who, outside of her friends & family in Alaska, are going to get excited about this -- certainly not the women who supported Hillary who stood for the right to choose -- just ONE of the issues that Palin is against.

John McCain and his advisors are fools if they think Hillary supporters are going to fall for this blatant attempt to pull Hillary supporters away from Barack. This move tells me that McCain thinks that women are stupid, and he has no respect for them. He is also and idiot because he looks like he'll do anything to win, just like he said of Barack not to long ago. What a clown.
