DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

McCain in his last ditch effort to revive his campaign is appealling to disgruntled Hillary voters. This is the truth behind him pulling Palin out of a hat. She was not even CONSIDERED as a nominee until McCain discovered that the only way he can win is by dividing the Democratic party and pulling on the heart strings of many Mid-upper class white females who had their dreams dashed by Hillary's campaign failure. DO NOT FORGET who McCain really is: someone who does not believe in equal pay, someone who does not believe in the right to choose, someone who has a clear record of voting against women and families for the duration of his career. Do not be fooled, he is trying to win by making a mockery of our intelligence. He thinks that any female he pulls out of his party hat will replace Hillary in your hearts and minds. He thinks that because he can show us a woman who agrees with his woman-hating politics we'll all be fooled. Show him that women of the Democratic party are smarter than that. No way, no how, no McCain!

Why do I have the feeling that McCain, heard PAL not Palin and thought that it was just fitting to have a PAL as VP? but is she lets him IN his wife will not be so happy and chances are that it may not matter any way....for him but for US it will be as disastrous as drilling all over Alaska....
Do I smell oil drilling in his pick? you bet ya..

I am a black woman. I don't vote my race or gender, I vote for the best candidate that I feel I can trust.

McSame opted for shock and redemption of his maverick credential.
There were many more qualified GOP women to select from. Palin?

Is Sarah Palin ready to step up and be Commander in Chief should something happen to 72 year old John McCain (such as dementia or a return of his melanoma)? I think not. This is a ridiculous choice and women are stupid to fall for it ( I'm assuming we are the targets here).

How extremist is Palin? How anti-choice is Palin? Consider this:

During the RNC next week Phyllis Schlafly and the Republican National Coalition for Life are sponsoring a reception honoring Palin, featuring Michele Bachmann, Gary Bauer and Tony Perkins:

Excuse me, this is no way to put a woman in the Whitehouse. To have a woman become President of the United States by default - remember McCain is going to be 73 when he is sworn in -infuriates me. If you supported Hillary Clinton it was not Just because of her gender and if McCain thinks this will sway many of those 18 million votes his way - well, he's just wrong!

This is an affront to women EVERYWHERE...and is an example of pandering at its finest. Does John McCain actually think that women can be so very superficial and shortsighted that a person's qualifications don't matter? Does he actually think that having the right plumbing would sway women voters without having credentials to actually BE a heartbeat away from the presidency? It is an insult! Women everywhere, speak up! Whether it be Republicans, Democrats or Independents. We should all be able to agree that whomever is chosen for VP should be qualified to be president. McCain's pick has ZERO foreign policy experience and is being investigated for ethics violations. (She dismissed an administrator in Alaska who refused to fire a state trooper who was formerly married to her sister who allegedly was abusive to her sister.) WOW, abuse of power, something new?!? NOT...voters be paying very careful attention...Again, highlights John McCain's JUDGMENT.

Just as Joe Scarborough said this morning on Good Morning Joe, "If it is a woman now then he felt that a lot of women would find this insulting" because it would have the appearance of trying to get the Hillary Clinton supporters. I think that is exactly correct. He certainly can no longer say anything about Obama being to young and inexperienced, because this lady is a relative unknown and has very little experience other than if one qualification is being a right wing candidate and definitely not a moderate as Tom Ridge would have been.
Then there is pundits staying that Biden will now have to tone down because he would seem a bully to women. Well this is one woman that says if you want to play with the men then take it as a man and Biden should just do exactly what he has always done.
GWeber Coweta, Ok.

Hmm....this ticket is starting to remind me of Mondale-Ferraro, probably with the same result?

In all seriousness, this is a bold political move by McCain. It's risky (Palin is inexperienced and kind of a lightweight) but it could pay huge dividends. There are some seriously ticked-off women in this country who supported Hillary solely because she is female, more than you might think (remember Ferarro's comments about Obama?) A lot of them might prefer Obama to McCain, but not enough to actually show up to the polls and vote Obama. The possibility of a female VP (or President) might be enough to get some of them out and voting. In a close election, this could be the difference. Dems and Obama supporters should be worried.

This is a joke. The Republican base is probably scratching thier heads wondering how Mc Cain could make such a blunder.
His senior citizen base will be saying:
DO WE REALLY WANT THIS WOMEN TO BE SECOND IN LINE TO THE PRESIDENCY, ESPECIALLY WHEN NANCY PELOSI IS THIRD IN LINE?
Too much for the old schoolers to handle.

I really hope those women aren't so shortsighted that they'd vote directly against their best interests just to put a woman in the cushy chair. McCain wants to revoke Roe v. Wade and said that women who aren't paid the same as men for the same work "just need more education." This choice is an insult to women everywhere.

By the way, I like your nickname. I'm a democrat, and one of my favorite things is bourbon. Woo-hoo!

He seems like he is trying to win Clinton supporters with this pick. What an insult both to Clinton and her supporters. Does he really think we were supporting her just because she is a woman? She was a strong, experienced leader who had many years of proof behind what she campaigned about. We voted for her because we supported her stand on the issues. If he thinks this woman could stand anywhere near Hillary, he has no respect.

We are not fooled.

Well we know that, look what he did to his ex-wife! Wake up American.. picking a woman just because of her gender, I'm sorry, a very low way to go.... I so hope he loses! No experience on the national level... McCain is 71-years old. What happens if something happens to him? I'm sorry but does she have economy experience? Our country is in debt and we are suffering..... how can she help the American people. She way to the Right....

I doubt very much that John McCain can adjust to her "positions" if she is that conservative....
The new Republican logo should be " nothing to make you feel young than a younger woman"
Why did she pick her? would it be because she is very close to the Russians?

If Palin were a man, he would not even have got a look. This pick is totally about having a woman on the ticket - even if she has only been a governor for 18 mo and before that a mayor of a small town. Do they think she is equal to Hillary just because she has the same plumbing? Hillary has 30 years of experience in leading. Palin is no Hillary!
