DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

John McCain seems to be a dirty old man with a fixation on "arm candy". His first two wives were beauty contestants. Now he chooses a relatively unknown and inexperienced Alaska governor who happens to have been a beauty contestant. Need one say more?

What this probably means is that any other serious candidates for VP -- if any indeed exist -- successfully dodged the bullet. This nomination shows just how desperate McCain and the RNC truly are. It will be a gift from the heavens if the convention is cancelled or postponed. Because it will be a stark stark contrast with Denver. The Twin Cities will be a freak show. Joe Biden has any number of equivalents on the other side of the aisle and there are even some interesting members of the administration who could have been picked ... This is the end for McCain and the Republican Dead Enders.

By picking Palin, McCain is really picking Karl Rove.

Look for a return to the "base" strategy (in all its forms) with the GOP going after
'baby-killin'', men-kissin', gun-controllin' libs.

She eats mooseburgers. Wow...I'm so impressed.

Palin is PRO-LIFE.. she is inexperienced and she is being used to attract those disgruntle Clinton supporters............ THE DEBATES WILL BE MEMORABLE.......

My first question: GOVERNOR PALIN AFTER GIVING BIRTH TO A CHILD WITH DOWN SYNDROME WHY DID YOU RETURN TO WORK ONLY THREE DAYS LATER??? WHO WAS CARING FOR THE CHILD???

IMPORTANT TO ME BECAUSE I HAVE AN UNCLE WHO HAS DOWN SYNDROME... AND I AM WARY OF ANY WOMAN THAT WOULD LEAVE HER CHILD ONLY THREE DAYS AFTER GIVING BIRTH........

In my opinion any woman with 5 children, one a new born with a birth defect should be home not running for VP. Stupid pick, not a great mother that is for sure.

I don't think that even the alleged Hillary supporters will be so 'mad" that they would vote for Palin.

Come on, NO WAY would Palin be qualified to be Commander-In-Chief is something happened to McCain!

Boy, talk about using Palin as a pawn!

What is it with Alaska and corrupt politicians? This is a most interesting development. I can hardly wait for the debates.

YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING!!!

This woman is UNDER INVESTIGATION in Alaska. There goes breaking away from Republican scandals.

This woman is 44 and has been governor for less than TWO YEARS? There goes the inexperience charge against Obama.

This woman is another anti-choice extremist. There goes the Hillary and independent voters, unless they are hypocrites.

Unbelievably BAD choice. Bye Johnny, we hardly knew ye

At first glance, she seems like a really risky choice. On the other hand, two names to consider: Agnew and Quayle. We all know what happened in those two elections.

Unbelievable. She may be an unknown to most but just last year I wrote her to beg her to reconsider her alarmingly brutal laws regarding wolf hunting from aircraft in Alaska and the bounty they pay for you bringing in a wolf LEG.
This woman is in total step with Bush's environmental policies. It's a sickeningly perfect choice.

Boy oh Boy, McCain sure thinks women are stupid.

A pro-life woman with 5 kids, who went back to work 3 days after she had a Down's syndrome baby. A Beauty Pageant contestant? Whose only experience was mayor of a tiny little town and less than 2 years as governor? Any women with ovaries is all you need on the ticket.

I'd be seriously pissed if I were a Republican.

I thought the news on Palin had to be a head-fake. I was WRONG!!! It IS true!!!!

McCain has shown what PATHETIC judgment he has by picking Palin! I'm SO GLAD it is true!

I truely believe that the only evangelicals that will vote for McCain NOW WITH PALIN on the ticket are people who ONLY ONLY ONLY vote for Pro-Life.

In this economic climate -- I doubt if there are too many people who would cast their vote ONLY for pro-life reasons.

OH THIS IS AWESOME FOR THE DEMS!!!

This is nothing more than a thoughtless ploy to recruit Hillary Clinton supporters. Pathetic!

The State of Alaska will sue to challenge the recent listing of polar bears as a threatened species, Gov. Sarah Palin said Wednesday.
She and other Alaska elected officials fear a listing will cripple oil and gas development in prime polar bear habitat off the state's northern and northwestern coasts.
