DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

McCain likes the way Palin looks, and Obama scared him last night. McCain turned 72 years old today and has fought several bouts with cancer………now you tell me? Is this woman ready to be president? I don't think so.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA You don't have anything at all now. I suspect the republican barbs will decline from middle school bullying to grade school taunts.

This is quite simply an attempt to pander to women. My wife and I just got finished discussing his pick and she is floored! She feels insulted and can't believe that McCain would stoop to this level. He could not pick Fiorina because she ran Hewlett Packard into the ground and was forced to resign by the board. So he did the only thing he could, with Cindy's support, pick a woman who they hope will attract those women who are on the fence.

I guess he and his staff have not been watching the Democratic Convention for the last couple of days. Hillary and Bill both threw their full support behind Barack. I am more than willing to bet that they will both be out on the campaign trail urging her/their supporters to vote for Barack.

Wow. Just... Wow!

Hillary-lovers will be duped, sadly. And the race will be closer in some states.

But I think Obama's energetic grassroots support still wins.

I'm a HIllary-lover and also an Obama supporter. I will NOT be duped!! And I have more confidence in the intelligence of her female supporters to believe that they wll also not be duped (well, maybe the PUMA's can be swayed -- but they came off pretty irrational and extreme anyway). Also not sure just how infuential or widespread those so-called PUMA's are anyway.

The majority of Hillary supporters will NOT be 'duped'. The supporters who may have been McCain supporters but were voting for Hillary solely because of Hillary's plumbing may indeed be duped. ANY of the other supporters are too smart, and too loyal to Hillary and Hillary's platform, to be so foolish as to fall for this transparent tactic. It is an absolute insult for McCain to have made that assumption--It highlights his total disregard for the intelligence of women.

I think if you're a Hillary supporter, you should be insulted by McCain's carpetbagging...

If there was ever a way for them to counteract Biden's beautiful righteous fury, I think they found that way (I can only imagine the highlights of the VP debate that the networks'll run)...

Wow! Wow! Wow! I got an e-mail from bro-in-law earlier, with a more complete bio on Palin. She is married to an Alaskan Indian, has five children, the last of which was born in April and has Downs' Syndrome; she knew about the Downs and refused to abort, saying her child was "perfect."

She is an athlete, a journalism graduate, a runner-up for Miss Alaska, and has worked in her husband's fishing boats.

In addition to having being Governor of Alaska.

This is superwoman whom I wish I could be.

Come on MARIEL, This is a head-fake from McCain. There is NO WAY McCain has got such BAD JUDGMENT that he'd REALLY pick Palin.

She has less experience of the lot.... just a figure head.

Yes, husband works for BP and she has said that we absolutely should be drilling in ANWR. "It's only a few thousand acres, out of a million and it won't affect the caribou..." Right, let's just keep on depending upon fossil fuels and ignore global warming...more of the same with McSame.

Wow. This is beyond baffling. She has virtually no experience, and McCain's central premise has been Obama's lack of experience. Clearly he is pandering to PUMAs. Does he really think they are so stupid that they will vote for ANY woman at all, just to have a woman in office?

BTW, I say this as a feminist and strong HRC supporter who is now voting for Obama.

Yes, McC is pandering to PUMAs. He is also pushing the "energy policy" "drill here, drill now" slogan the Republicans have come up with to help the oil industry. She will also satisfy some of the base. I would be concerned that there are many Republican men who won't vote for a woman.

here's the deal on experience...where it matters most is the TOP of the ticket-obama didn't suddenly gain experience by picking biden. of the four (palin, biden, obama, mccain) she has the most executive branch experience-more than the other 3 combined.

Interesting..... What's the story on her regarding Rights for abortion? Do we know? Again, we who is the President? McCain who will lead this nation into war III, don't be fooled America. The choices are still the same. War, war, war... women can have the same goals too, because she's a women what does that mean? Again, I didn't pick Obama because he was a man and black, that's insane, what are the issues? Is the person going to help America or hurt us? But again, perhaps Americans are too young to understand the real issues. But nonetheless if the American people do pick John McCain, England here I come...

She's EXTREMELY pro-life. She's an extreme conservative. She's well-loved in Alaska. Conservatives are likely to be pleased with this choice. It's a pretty transparent choice though. John McCain obviously believes that women will be so blindly over-joyed by this choice that they will jump on board the McSame ship. Tad condescending in my humble opinion.

Palin is strongly pro-life and belongs to Feminists for Life.[8] She opposes same-sex marriage; but, she has stated that she has gay friends, and is receptive to gay and lesbian concerns about discrimination.[8] While the previous administration did not implement same-sex benefits, Palin complied with a state Supreme Court order and signed them into law. [32]

She supported a democratic advisory vote from the public on whether there should be a constitutional amendment on the matter.[33] Alaska was one of the first U.S. states to pass a constitutional ban on gay marriage, in 1998, along with Hawaii.[34]

Palin's first veto was used to block legislation that would have barred the state from granting benefits to gay state employees and their partners. In effect, her veto granted State of Alaska benefits to same-sex couples. The veto occurred after Palin consulted with Alaska's attorney general on the constitutionality of the legislation

Adrienne, I was WRONG!!! It IS true. McCain has shown what PATHETIC judgment he has by picking Palin! I'm SO GLAD it is true.

I truely believe that the only evangelicals that will vote for McCain NOW WITH PALIN on the ticket are people who ONLY ONLY ONLY vote for Pro-Life.

In this economic climate -- I doubt if there are people who would cast their vote ONLY for pro-life reasons.

OH THIS IS AWESOME FOR THE DEMS!!!
