DENVER — John McCain tapped little-known Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his vice presidential running mate on Friday in a startling selection on the eve of the Republican National Convention.

Two senior campaign officials disclosed McCain's decision a few hours before the Republican presidential nominee-to-be and his newly-minted running mate appeared at a rally in swing-state Ohio.

Palin, like McCain, is a conservative with a maverick streak who has shown a willingness to clash with others in her own party. A self-styled hockey mom and political reformer, she has been governor of her state less than two years.

Palin's selection shocked numerous Republican officials.

At 44, Palin is a generation younger that Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware, who is Barack Obama's running mate on the Democratic ticket.

She is three years Obama's junior, as well _ and McCain has made much in recent weeks of Obama's relative lack of experience in foreign policy and defense matters.

In making his pick, McCain passed over several more prominent prospects who had figured in speculation for months _ Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Pennsylvania Gov. Tom Ridge among them.

Palin flew overnight to an airport in Ohio near Dayton, and even as she awaited her formal introduction, some aides said they had believed she was at home in Alaska.

Story continues below

She is a former mayor of Wasilla who became governor of her state in December, 2006 after ousting a governor of her own party in a primary and then dispatching a former governor in the general election.

More recently, she has come under the scrutiny of an investigation by the Republican-controlled legislature into the possibility that she ordered the dismissal of Alaska's public safety commissioner because he would not fire her former brother-in-law as a state trooper.

The timing of McCain's selection appeared designed to limit any political gain Obama yields from his own convention, which ended Thursday night with his nominating acceptance speech before an estimated 84,000 in Invesco Field in Colorado.

Public opinion polls show a close race between Obama and McCain, and with scarcely two months remaining until the election, neither contender can allow the other to jump out to a big post-convention lead.

McCain has had months to consider his choice, and has made it clear to reporters that one of his overriding goals was to avoid a situation like the one in 1988, when Dan Quayle was thrown into a national campaign with little preparation.

Palin has a long history of run-ins with the Alaska GOP hierarchy, giving her genuine maverick status and reformer credentials that could complement McCain's image.

Two years ago, she ousted the state's Republican incumbent governor, Frank Murkowski in the primary, despite having little money and little establishment backing.

She has also distanced herself from two senior Republican office-holders, sen. Ted Stevens and Rep. Don young. Both men are under federal corruption investigations.

She had earned stripes _ and enmity _ after Murkowski made her head of the Alaska Oil and Gas Conservation Commission. From that post, she exposed ethical violations by the state GOP chairman, also a fellow commissioner.

She and her husband Todd Palin, have five children. The latest, a baby, was born with Down syndrome.

You can't be serious. Here's another one that not only doesn't get it, doesn't appear to get anything. As a woman, I'm ashamed of you.

Oh, please. I would have had more respect for him if he'd picked Kay Bailey Hutchinson, a woman with vast years of experience in the senate.

I'm insulted by the idea a woman who's served less than 2 years as governor of Alaska deserves this over other choices.

Why? Just because her gender might get him some votes?

Sorry, but I find THAT very manipulative--in fact, very sexist.

Not to mention how well that strategy worked for Mondale and Ferraro. (Maybe McSame won't even carry his home state).

This shows how important "experience" REALLY is to him (and how unlikely he is to make the "one-term only" promise now.)_

Sarah Palin? Yikes.

People like you who care less about issues and more about emotions must be disallowed to vote on grounds of insanity.

As another woman, let me echo my shame as well at you Miss 112985! Do you know this woman? Are you informed on her positions? Or does that NOT matter to you?!? The fact that she's a woman (any woman) is good enough for you.

I wonder if the Hillary supporters are smart enough to see that this is a transparent attempt to win them over. They should be offended the same way they would've been had Obama picked Sebelius.

Kay Baily Hutchinson, JUST NOW on CNN, said, "I don't know any thing about her [Paulin] and that might be a good thing."

Hutchinson went on to say, "I don't think people in Washington know her - She doesn't know her way around Washington and that might be a good thing."

Is that so Sen. Hutchinson? Didn't the GOP criticize Obama for "not knowing his way around Washington?"

But, in Palin's defense. She has been a Governor for 2 years. Maybe the criminal probe on her, in Alaska, was dismissed?

Shes Hot.

He'll win now. White men will gladly drop their principles to vote for a good looking conservative woman.

Too bad shes just as corrupt as her Two Alaskan sugar daddys under Indictment and FBI investigation for fraud, and bribery.

What happened to the "experience" argument. She has been governor for 68 days longer than Obama has been running for President. And she has a degree in journalism. Do they really teach things like the US Constitution and how to be the leader of the free world in University of Idaho school of journalism? And since Mac is 72, this decision is a serious one... shows seriously BAD judgment on his part. I don't know if I should laugh or feel sick.

I agree. I find this choice terrifying--and baffling.

McCain has WORSE judgment than I even gave him credit.

THIS HAS TO BE A HEAD-FAKE FROM MCCAIN CAMP?!?

Yes they do teach US Constitution in U. of Idaho School of Journalism. I speak as the daughter of two graduates of the University of Washington School of Journalism; my dad taught at the Journalism School in addition to working at the Seattle P-I in order to fund my stay at Stanford University. I happen to know what they teach in Journalism schools, and it includes knowledge of the Constitution and political science. "How to be the leader of the free world" is not taught.

She is hot looking, though her politics make her very unattractive to this "white guy". I wonder if McCain got Cindy's approval for this. I mean, maybe he's looking to "trade up"... again. He may not win the election, but hey, what an ice-breaker!

Love your comment!
I've been paid less than men in my earlier careers. Never thought about it in politics.
Thanks for the laughs.

Since McCain is 72, I hope people really understand what this decision means... President Palin? Really? Maybe Obama was right on the money - McCain just doesn't GET IT!

When Scarborough (who is sort of like Hannity-lite) heard the rumor this morning he immediately dismissed it as too absurd to be true - a 44 year old in Alaska with a journalism degree from University of Idaho who took office 21 months ago is going to be 2nd in line to be the leader of the free world? Really? Really? REALLY?!?!

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:05 AM on 08/29/2008

Hannity, with his insane/irrational/vile hatred of Obama, will find a way to completely spin this as positive and progressive. For Hannity, McSame=Good, Obama=Bad, no matter what the issue or the evidence.

You are joking, right? LOL.

She just had a baby, about 6 months ago, right? On top of 4-5 other kids?

Good for her, but as a mom myself, the prospect of helping to run the country with such a full house is daunting...

My vote is not in play, but I am intrigued to hear her speak.

Take a chill pill "112985"!! Look at the big picture and not just at her gender. Is that ALL you care about?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 11:26 AM on 08/29/2008

How about looking at it this way -
Be HAPPY that a WOMAN is the VP candidate for a MAJOR political party in the US. That's very important to you.

Fine. Women have made progress in national politics. But look at how long this took. Geraldine Ferraro was the Democratic VP candidate 24 years ago. Earlier, Shirley Chisolm, a black woman, ran for President, but without enough support.

NOW in 2008, who has the BEST QUALIFICATIONS to hold the highest office in the land? The VP must be ready to step for the President.

You would honor ALL women who run for office, if you choose the person with the BEST QUALIFICATIONS, not simply the "right gender."

We need to vote for the BEST CANDIDATE in any political contest, regardless of gender. If a poorly qualified women gets into office just because she's a woman, it can set back women's political progress. Any poor performance becomes "proof" to biased people that women aren't qualified for office anywhere. NOT true.

Honor the women who have come before by not diminishing their achievements. Honor what they brought to the contest. Don't vote for Palin because of gender. Vote for the best candidate. That will honor the women AND men who seek election - to work in office on OUR BEHALF. That's what they deserve and that's what we deserve. Thank you.
