Barack Obama Campaign Spokesman Bill Burton responds to John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate:

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Sen. Chuck Schumer says:

"After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel:

"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic."

Rep. Jim Clyburn on South Carolina ETV Radio:

"I do believe that McCain has to do something to reshuffle the cards, shake up the establishment, do something unexpected and Governor Palin has all the kinds of things that McCain might see as a way to shake things up. I think [her selection] would be something similar to Dan Quayle. Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner. Being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough. Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro.she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

Barbara Boxer:

The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.

Meanwhile, the non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain's loss of maverick reformer credentials:

"In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image - an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he's run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week," Donnelly said.

"This selection raises plenty of questions," Donnelly continued. "She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she's been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain's extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we've seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration."

Obama distanced himself from some of the harsher criticisms of Palin, the Politico reports:

"I think that, uh, you know, campaigns start getting these, uh, hair triggers and, uh, the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," he said, according to the pool report, apparently criticizing his staff for going overboard, as he did occasionally in the primary.

He was referring to a more gracious statement of congratulations he issued later with Biden, which he then reiterated.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person ... with a terrific personal story.

"I'm sure that she will help make the case for Republicans, unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket."

"He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies," he said.

"But the fact that she ... will soon be nominated ... is one more indicator of this country moving forward ... one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."

I feel sorry for all of you sick, negative, pathetic people! A Governor doesn't have the luxury to just vote "present." Sarah Palin has more "nads" than Obama will ever have.

Yeah being the mayor of Wasilla, Alaska (pop 5,000). They really have very important issues there, especially concerning foreign policy issues.

I take it you are not from Alaska. I am, lived there for thirty years. The Governor of Alaska gains about as much "Governing Experience" as a Mayor of a medium size city in the lower 48 would, if that. There are only roughly 670,000 people living in the whole state. To be blunt, there isn't a lot of governing for the Governor to do. Heck, one Governor we had once would to leave the Juneau for a time every year and go commercial fishing because that's what he did before becoming Governor and he didn't want to lose his permit to fish after his term was over.

I'm not knocking Alaskans. The people are great and I really loved the place. But Alaskans are a different type of people by-in-large. We have a different mindset than most in the lower 48. More laid back, if you will. More concerned with what was/is going on in our immediate vicinity than anything else. Especially anything going on outside Alaska. International affairs was/is not something many Alaskans even think about, let alone talk about or learn anything about. If Sarah Palin is an Alaskan true blood she was likely more concerned whether or not her family would get lucky and draw a Moose tag for hunting season than she was about the war in Iraq, the state of the US economy, or anything else happening outside.

Which city mayors have to negotiate with the Federal government for education funds and interstate hiways construction/funding, deploy national guard forces, oversee the state patrol, resolve about river rights/disputes, allocation of public communications infrastructure (area codes, zip codes, etc). The list goes on and on. Obviously, there is an executive nature to both jobs that makes it uniquely qualified for other executive leader jobs (compared to say a "vote yes or no" and get smoozed by lobbiest job like congressman). It seems naive to compare the duties of a state governor to that of a mayor, unless it is for a city. The jobs, regardless of the state or city are tremendously diverse with regard to scope, power, and role - although they are both executive positions. Now the role of "community organizer" I cannot represent, as I am not sure where it fits in American civics.

I ask you this:
Which one is more scary? An inexperienced President or an inexperienced Vice President?
Being a heartbeat away or being the heartbeat of Presidency?

The good thing about Palin is that she is NOT a senator...how is that for a change!

Well as the greatest failure in American history is a former Governor from Texas by the Name of George W. Bush, it might not be such a bad thing to have two Senators as President and Vice-President.

You forgot Franklin Roosevelt who incarcerated thousands of japanese americans for their race and without due process of law. And John Kennedy who invaded Cuba and escalsated our involvement in Viet Nam to be followed by his VP Johnson of War on Poverty fame who left in disgrace. Or, Carter who was voted out of office by a disgusted electorate. Or Clinton who, well, you know.

Bush will be judged by history but your democratic failures far outweigh his. And, with more devastating results.

Simply more of the same from the Republicans. They speak with forked tongue.

If this happened to Obama, he would have been hounded to the end of time.

Republicans seem to have no Shame. NONE Like Palin's Experience. NONE

She had to recognize that this would eventually break. What kind of mother would put their child in this kind of situation for their own personal ambition? I have to question her mothering skills.

Where is the moral outrage from the good Christian Republicans?

"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you devour widows" houses, and for a pretense, make long prayers. Therefore you will receive greater condemnation.
"Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you travel land and sea to win one proselyte, and when he is won, you make him twice as much a son of hell as yourselves."

Why do you have to bring Jesus into this? Lets just stick to the facts. You want to talk about forked tongues let look at Biden and his many comment about Obama before he was given the VP nod.

Sarah Palin is a far right wing neo conservative. She is just like Bush and McCain.

Bush, McCain, and Palin, they are all the same. I don't want 4 more years of corruption and the right wing conservative agenda in the White House.

Women can kiss their reproductive rights goodbye if they vote for McCain and Palin. The American worker can kiss their job goodbye if they vote for McCain and Palin because McCain and Palin are for NAFTA. Barack Obama is against NAFTA.

McCain and Palin will turn back decades of Civil Rights laws and bring our country back to the horse and buggy days with their United States Supreme Court nominees and with their political agenda.

As Hillary said, NO way, NO how, NO McCain!

VOTE FOR BARACK OBAMA AND LETS GET A DEMOCRAT WIN IN NOVEMBER!

FYI the overturning of Roe V Wade would be decided based on the appointing of SC judges and a deciding vote not the VP.

How can any family values Republican or any person with family values vote for someone who is leaving her 4 month old baby with Down's Syndrome to pursue higher office?

All 4 month olds need their Mother, but a child with special needs has more requirements and needs their Mom to be not just their Mom but their advocate! This is not possible if you are rushing around to become VP. Worse yet, if she was VP how could she devote the time needed for all his special needs? And, if she became president this child would not get the extra motherly devotion needed by a special needs child.

Everyone is rightfully questioning the 17 year old's situation, but the 4 month old needs not a VP but a Mommy.

As the mother of a special needs child, I know the extra time and effort it takes. Family Values should not just be talked about, but lived each day.

Her husband is a "Mr. Mom" while she is the main breadwinner. Isn't that good enough for you, or does it have to be Mommy who stays home with the kids. I thought Democratic feminists advocated choices for all women. After reading, for months, the trashing Hillary took on these very pages, I'm beginning to think the Democratic party hates women.

I know, it broke my heart to leave my son to go to class, I only worked part- time( I did without things to be there with him), because I could not bare to be away from him and I had to work to pay my bills. If I had money like she did, I would do volunteer work and be home with the love of my life, my beautiful son.

Are you for real?
Shame on you for writing that. I sit astonished that you of all people: a fellow woman, a fellow mother of a special needs child, would dare to jude the life of another woman. How can you begin to say what her choices should be? I am sure her choice was more than difficult. Have you even thought or begun to consider what kind of advocate she can be for her child not to mention yours as the VP of the USA. As women we should not make the mistake of believing that because we have a uterus that we can provide superior care for your children to the care given to them by their fathers. Why do you assume that the child care would then go to the 17 year old? He has a father.
By running for VP Sarah is not just putting her family first she is putting all of our families first.
She is paving the way for a new generation of ethical politicians.

Last night I saw an interview on CNBC with Pallin and Maria Baritromo. Pallin was fairly well versed on energy issues. She may not be as stupid as we think.

She has relationships with the oil industry in Alaska. Of course should would be well versed in energy isues. But her views are tainted with oil industry cronyism again, just like the last 8 years.

We all know she's not stupid. That's not the point. The point is that what she does know isn't what this country needs her to know. Energy issues are not the same as a war, as an economy, or as poverty. Before she can run and jump with the big dogs, she first has to learn how to walk.

Does anyone know if Palin had any connections to getting congressional earmarks for a small unaccredited evangelical bible college called Alaska Christian College? It preaches to Native Americans and has no real traditional college classes. The US taxpayer gave over 1 million dollars to this church directly through earmarks. The earmarks were stopped by a lawsuit for violating the separation of church and state.

I'd like to know if Palin has any connection.

By picking this person, McCain has indicated to me two things:

1) He does not take the country's problems seriously

2) He has made it clear the VP has no say, no power, nothing to do- so Palin is a safe pick (unless the old man kicks the bucket - which he arrogantly believes will NEVER happen).

I attend most of the Town council meetings for my little upstate NY town (pop 6,000) - legislative discussions, presided over by the Mayor, concern topics like:

Funding for the historical association - should it be $100 or $250?
Loose dogs
Noisey "jake" brakes on trucks coming through town
Whether we need another payloader
When the farm-to-market road wil be repaved.

Really sizzling, politically dangerous debates errupt when somebody wants a stop sign and none of the neighbors can agree where it should go.

Often, feelings get hurt when trying to decide whether the kindergarten kids can have their annual Halloween costume parade down Main Street, or whether Bob the cop should switch his planned vacation and direct traffic that day.

Palin? Puhleeze!

Palin on her intense studiousness about foreign policy and how our federal gov't works:

VP Role: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J9pnzQ96kWA&feature=related

Her take on Iraq: "I've been so focused on state government, I haven't really focused much on the war in Iraq....I want to know that we have an exit plan in place; I want assurances that we are doing all we can to keep our troops safe.

How's that exit plan coming along, Senator McCain?

McCain: "I think about whether that person who I select would be most prepared to take my place. And that would be the key criteria [sic]."

I can't wait till all the gutter blogs/rags jump on this baby mama(grandma) drama with Sarah and the oldest daughter. Sounds like it needs to be checked out. There is a thing called birth control that would have saved her and the daughter grief.

This is PURE GOLD for the large blogs like TMZ and others. They live for and on this stuff. Alaska has it's own gun-totting Paris Hilton now. You could not dream this up! HuffingtonPost can just sit back and watch this unfold. Maybe Palin can brush this under the carpet in Elk Snout before the selection, but national rags will now eat this up with all the paying readers wanting more and more!

This is what McCain gets for only visiting Palin once, and NOT doing a full background check on the family and any rumors. Really bad judgement from a current US Senator! He jumped into the war vote and jumped into a unknown VP pick. He fires from the hip and asks questions after the dust settles. He is just to old and unsound for the presidential job.

Get Mitt Romney back ASAP! Still time with the convention pushed back.
