Barack Obama Campaign Spokesman Bill Burton responds to John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate:

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Sen. Chuck Schumer says:

"After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel:

"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic."

Rep. Jim Clyburn on South Carolina ETV Radio:

"I do believe that McCain has to do something to reshuffle the cards, shake up the establishment, do something unexpected and Governor Palin has all the kinds of things that McCain might see as a way to shake things up. I think [her selection] would be something similar to Dan Quayle. Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner. Being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough. Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro.she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

Barbara Boxer:

The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.

Meanwhile, the non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain's loss of maverick reformer credentials:

"In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image - an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he's run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week," Donnelly said.

"This selection raises plenty of questions," Donnelly continued. "She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she's been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain's extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we've seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration."

Obama distanced himself from some of the harsher criticisms of Palin, the Politico reports:

"I think that, uh, you know, campaigns start getting these, uh, hair triggers and, uh, the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," he said, according to the pool report, apparently criticizing his staff for going overboard, as he did occasionally in the primary.

He was referring to a more gracious statement of congratulations he issued later with Biden, which he then reiterated.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person ... with a terrific personal story.

"I'm sure that she will help make the case for Republicans, unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket."

"He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies," he said.

"But the fact that she ... will soon be nominated ... is one more indicator of this country moving forward ... one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."

Isn't it interesting how the Democrats are so against an Alaskan governor who they say lacks foreign relations and national security to be given the opportunity to be Vice President of the United States, yet in 1992 they not only supported and promoted but elected a governor from Arkansas who really did lack any experience in foreign relations or national security as President of the United States.

She has a lot of issues and lead to a question of her judgement. Here is an article from an Alaskan Newspaper about the birth of her child.

http://www.frontiersman.com/articles/2008/04/20/local_news/doc480ad3e2c65c0841152474.txt

Last year I experienced the loss of a special needs baby that was born prematurely so I can speak on this subject with some authority. If the description she gives of the childs birth is accurate then she has possibly the worst judgment in the history of high-office politics.

1. Why is she flying at all in the third-trimester?
2. Why did she get on a plane and and wait 12+ hours to get medical attention when she knew the pregnancy was high risk (she's 44, baby was diagnosed with Downs Syndrome)

If she is so cavalier with her babies life then does she really have the judgement to be in charge of our nuclear arsenal (Bad Judgement + Apocalypse Button = End of Human Civilization).

On the other hand she could be throwing this story out there to show she is tough, which of course makes her a disingenuous and hard to trust.

I'd like to hear an answer to why she behaved the way she did since it speaks to who she is as a person and as a leader.

Isn't it interesting that McCain's main campaign theme has been foreign policy credentials, yet he picks a VP who is singularly unqualified to take his place.

1. She's on video stating that she hasn't followed the Iraq war 'much' because she's been too busy with her part-time governor's position in AK.

2. She didn't have a passport until 2007.

Would you like to explain why those two are perfect qualifications to be VP?

The only freedom Repubs seem to want is for Big Business to be free of restrictions. Any other rights and choices should be restricted, according to them. And they can't seriously blame their stuff on the bible either. God gave us free will. If you make the "responsible" decision because the government made you do it, it is not an homage to God. If a person follows the commandments of his/her own volition, then it truly means something.

We need to just let this flame fizzle out on her own. By the end of next week she will be fully vetted, and all the steam in this engine will have blown out. There are too many conservative leaders, too many women leaders, who haven't said a word, unless caught in media headlights and they are not enthusiastic they are careful about what they say. While there will always be weird things that occur (who'd have thought Bush would get a second term) when it comes to Republicans and elections, we need to return issues to the spotlight. For example, do you really want the already waning public school dollars given to private schools of the rich? Then you should actually read McCain's view on Education. Just remember that this woman knows how to manipulate men really well and could/will take the role of the damsel in distress when it comes to confronting her on the real issues. Just Watch, and ask yourself: do we really need soap opera drama in the White House?

Good question!!
I say no! Read this:

This McCain pick is embarrassing.

There are so many other STRONG women in the Republican party that have toiled for years and risen to the top and have achieved something and he decides to go for the beauty queen on a freebie instead.

I have a strong feeling she was chosen because:
1) She is a woman
2) She is politically weak and will stay "quiet" unlike say Kay Hutchison or Liz Dole.

Ah well ... whatever.

Clearly Palin doesn't believe in science, maybe then she woulda done some research regarding increased chance of occurrence for down syndrome when over 40, and maybe chosen to use birth control seeing how she already had 4 kids and all. How can we risk someone like that being a heartbeat away from president of the most powerful nation in the world if she couldn't research/make a wise decision for something that small.

Im thinking that republicans will feed you lies.
my mouth is open with disbelief after reading this: This is what we want to fight against.

"Presidential scholars say she(sarah) appears to be the least experienced, least credentialed person to join a major-party ticket in the modern era."

Alaska State Senate President Lyda Green:
"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a REPUBLICAN from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

How could he not have picked her for her gender? Are you kidding about her record???? As a council member and mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and two years as governor of Alaska? What is her most important accomplishment that will benefit the American people? We still have two wars going on, the housing crisis is putting people on the street, jobs are disappearing, the number of people who can't afford health insurance is growing. She's an ethics reformer who - oops - has a little ethics problem of her own. She has kept budgets down - in a town of 5,000 and for two years as governor?

"When CNN political correspondent Dana Bash interviewed McCain last April, she mentioned his joke that one of the two main tasks of the vice president is to check on the president's health every day, a job of particular importance in his case. What did he mean by that? It was just a humorous remark, he said. But when she pressed him further, McCain said: "I think about whether that person who I select would be most prepared to take my place. And that would be the key criteria [sic]."

http://www.salon.com/opinion/conason/2008/08/30/palin/

Does McCain really believe that this is the person who would be most prepared to take his place?

Palin has already been in Kuwait, meeting with the troops, test firing their guns, etc. She also has had extensive meetings with the Japanese, Chinese and Russians regarding Alaskan oil, pipelines, etc. Russia lobbied her to get to build part of the natural gas pipeline. You guys should stop reading the trivia and read the intellectual articles.

This McCain pick is a nightmare for the American public. At least Obama is smart and smart enough to always get advise from the experts about disasters. We do not need somebody going off on a “wing ding” to prove they are independant.
Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi will never let this woman get any place. It is like America is having an affair with another woman. Believe she is another Dan Quayle, and a real stupid move for the country, “my friends”!

Palin shows more judgement. Barack after college put his desire to be rich, (elitist) on hold to serve the people with dire needs.

Palin jumped at the offer of being the next president, even if she didn't qualify. baby 4 months old. wow, post-partumn reaction for sure

lack of judgement

She has more practical governing experience than Obama, especially when you take into consideration Obama being MIA for most of the last two years."

Incorrect.

-Obama was a founding member of the board of directors of Public Allies in 1992, resigning before his wife, Michelle, became the founding executive director of Public Allies Chicago in early 1993.

-He served on the board of directors of the Woods Fund of Chicago, which in 1985 had been the first foundation to fund Obama's DCP, from 1993–2002, and served on the board of directors of The Joyce Foundation from 1994–2002.

-Obama served on the board of directors of the Chicago Annenberg Challenge from 1995–2002, as founding president and chairman of the board of directors from 1995–1999.

-He also served on the board of directors of the Chicago Lawyers' Committee for Civil Rights Under Law, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, and the Lugenia Burns Hope Center.

-Obama was elected to the Illinois Senate in 1996, succeeding State Senator Alice Palmer as Senator from the 13th District, which then spanned Chicago South Side neighborhoods from Hyde Park-Kenwood south to South Shore and west to Chicago Lawn. (State legislator, 1997–2004)

-Obama was sworn in as a senator on January 4, 2005. Obama was the fifth African American Senator in U.S. history, and the third to have been popularly elected. He is the only Senate member of the Congressional Black Caucus

You don't get it. The Hillary voters are the moms and grandmothers of the gender equity era that Sarah Palin appeals to. Moreover, the parents of younger women see in Palin a true role model. Hillary voters should rejoice in seeing a woman who has accomplished something that they never had the chance to do. But instead they will let their bitterness spill over into traditional Democrat themes, abortion being one. The new generation of women don't feel threatened by that issue and many others. As a parent of a 21-year old daughter who is energized to vote for someone she identifies with, I say more power to Sarah Barracuda.

Nice try. Your comment about the bottom of the Republican ticket could just as easily apply to the top of the Democrat ticket. Perhaps there should be another debate added strictly on foreign policy. McCain could debate Biden, and Obama debate Palin, contests of equals.

You still don't get it; it isn't about Hillary voters. Women Sarah Palin's age and younger don't have anger and resentment. Hillary Clinton offers them nothing. The scare tactics of the older generation don't work with today's young women. My 21 year old daughter is excited about voting for someone who "gets" her generation. You feed her traditional scare tactics and her eyes glaze over. Women who grew up in the gender equity era aren't buying what you're selling.

The pick of Palin has not increased her support among women so far.

I do wonder this: Since she supposedly has evangelical street cred, I wonder what evangelical church she belongs to? Anybody know?

There are many many evangelical churches that do not allow women to VOTE. Alaska certainly has some of them. I wonder if Ms Sarah can even vote in her own church?

Bottom line, conservatives care about nothing but a dollar in their pockets. See Blackwater and Halliburton. They care nothing about the some 3200 men and women's death in a war waged on lies. They care nothing about outing one of our own CIA operatives for the sake of politics, and the undoubtedly torture and deaths of Plame's overseas contacts. They care nothing about the fact some 47 million of our citizens, 8.7 of them children, without health care. Copierpro, you and your kind are a dwindling minority. And thank God for it.
