Barack Obama Campaign Spokesman Bill Burton responds to John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate:

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Sen. Chuck Schumer says:

"After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel:

"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic."

Rep. Jim Clyburn on South Carolina ETV Radio:

"I do believe that McCain has to do something to reshuffle the cards, shake up the establishment, do something unexpected and Governor Palin has all the kinds of things that McCain might see as a way to shake things up. I think [her selection] would be something similar to Dan Quayle. Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner. Being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough. Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro.she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

Barbara Boxer:

The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

Story continues below

In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.

Meanwhile, the non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain's loss of maverick reformer credentials:

"In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image - an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he's run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week," Donnelly said.

"This selection raises plenty of questions," Donnelly continued. "She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she's been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain's extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we've seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration."

Obama distanced himself from some of the harsher criticisms of Palin, the Politico reports:

"I think that, uh, you know, campaigns start getting these, uh, hair triggers and, uh, the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," he said, according to the pool report, apparently criticizing his staff for going overboard, as he did occasionally in the primary.

He was referring to a more gracious statement of congratulations he issued later with Biden, which he then reiterated.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person ... with a terrific personal story.

"I'm sure that she will help make the case for Republicans, unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket."

"He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies," he said.

"But the fact that she ... will soon be nominated ... is one more indicator of this country moving forward ... one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."

I don't think Democrats should criticize Sarah Palin, it's just too easy and will come off like bullying. Let her do herself in. I heard her speak, she's fast talking and all over the map. The glare of the national media spotlight will eventually trip her up because she's changing positions to fit in and be what she thinks she should be.
McCain, the old guy surrounded by the two younger women, wife and veep, as if that proves virility. It's time to stand down and let the Repubs do the heavy lifting. They've been leaderless and rudderless since Bush blew off the job, and Cheney answered a question about the American people against the war with "So?"
Don't do the Repubs work for them by blasting her. Let everyone else do it: SNL, media, most voters, even the Repubs are smelling disaster. Joe Biden has the toughest task, to not appear as a know it all because next to her he, uh, is one. Her narrow views and life choices makes her attractive-looking but hardly intelligent-sounding.

You're correct Ms. Harter, and I hope I haven't been one of those 'seen' as criticizing her, just pointing out how callous and Rovian this decision was by McCain. You talk to a person on the phone ONCE, meet them ONCE, and on that, you choose this person to be Commander in Chief if something happens to you. Great first executive decision wouldn't you say?

Sorry Kathy,

Plead all you want, but you won't be able to control the anger of your lunatic fringe group. Having "useful idiots" is a good thing at times, but unfortunately, although they are useful, the are also idiots with no self control or reasoning. They know no other strategy than "attack".

Palin energizes a lathargic base and will appeal to the regular apolitical people in this country. Obviously you have not seen the new polls that now have McCain ahead of Obama, or have noticed the flood of contributions that have swamped into the McCain campaign.

Your lightweight candidate is lost. All he had was this extravaganza for a week and his big speech. What did it get him? Nothing, and since he's been avoiding debates and appearances, I'd be interested in your opinion on what you think will be the catalist to stop his freefall? The Huffington post bloggers? LOL!

Right you are turner. These ignorant bloggers aren't really talking about "saddleback" and how McCain cleaned Obama's clock. Obama keeps saying "I'm ready for that debate". Oh really. didn't Mccain suggest more forums like saddleback? OH where oh where is Obama. No teleprompter, no Obama!!!!! Coward.

Ah, suddenly experience no longer matters. They're calling Palin a hero because she made the 'choice' to give birth to a child with Down's Syndrome, the operative word being 'choice.'. Yet she is anti-choice. She chose to have five children, one with special needs. Conservatives would say that it's very selfish of her to put that unnecessary strain on Alaskan taxpayers. Her husband belongs to the steelworkers union. So, even before she became a government employee, the 7-member Palin family never had to worry about medical bills or about her husband losing his job because he had the great good fortune to be protected by a labor union. But conservatives believe that no one is entitled to health insurance or job security, and they hate labor unions. So she can't be a true conservative, otherwise she wouldn't allow his employer or the Alaskan government to foot the bill for her big family's health insurance, and health care, and educational needs. It's so easy to say you're conservative when you've always had democratic policies underwriting your family's basic needs.

Bravo. Excellent. Challenge the "conservatives" out there who benefit hugely from our policies and protections, on their ideological purity/integrity. That'll leave a lot of mouths gaping and flapping wordlessly. Powerful argument, well done.

The 7-member Alaskan Palin family - doesn't each Alaskan get around $2000 a year from the State? So, $14000 a year? I'd keep on having kids if I were her!!

She has as much foreign policy experience as Senator Obama (with his 143 days in the Senate). She does have something that Obama lacks; accomplishments and executive experience.

Really? Well let me refresh your maybe selective seeing and hearing. Palin: "I haven't focused much on the Iraq war..." And in case you didn't know, being a U.S. Senator, whether it's a day or 10 years, one has to 'focus' not only on domestic matters, but foreign as well. Why, because you're a Senator of the U.S. not state Sen. as he was, or Gov. And certainly not mayor of Wasilla.

Sarah Palin has probably made more critical decisions in her short time as Councilman, Mayor and Governor than Joe Biden has made in his forty years in the Senate, where most of his decisions have been ‘I agree with my other democratic colleges’.

Palin is a fanatic on most issues. The story of her water breaking before she gave a speech in Texas and then hopping a plane to give birth back in Alaska sounds whacked. They don't even let you on a plane sometimes after 7 months! Often people that are this self-righteous and judgmental have ssomething to hide about themselves. I think the National Enquirer is going to break this one, just like they did with Edwards. Serves McSame and the Rethugs right.

"Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint."

That line would make an outstanding Obama commercial.

Something like..

"John McCain wrote in his 2002 book that "Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint." - He's willing to live with the consequences of his actions, are you?

Someone please get this line in a commercial somewhere!!

from an article on McCain actually wanting LIeberman, but going with Palin:

At the very least, the process reflects Mr. McCain’s history of making fast, instinctive and sometimes risky decisions. “I make them as quickly as I can, quicker than the other fellow, if I can,” Mr. McCain wrote, with his top adviser Mark Salter, in his 2002 book, “Worth the Fighting For.” “Often my haste is a mistake, but I live with the consequences without complaint.

So HE is ready to live with the consequences. Thats terrific. This is his decision making process. If you worked for/were married to/in any way subject to anyone with this decision making process- you will know what this means. We all live with consequences.
Oops, maybe he shouldnt have attacked some country. Deal with it.
Oops, maybe he shouldnt have drilled til there was no more wildlife. Deal with it.
Oops, maybe he shouldnt have left the country subject to someone totally unprepared to lead an entity larger than Alaska. Some argue even that. Deal with it.
Oops, maybe he shouldve thought about what Putin and the rest will do with an inexperienced 'heartbeat away' leader, should the worst occur. Deal with it.

New York Times.

I hope Mrs Palin is not the reason mcsame loses. I hope it's all the other things that cause mcsame to lose, like. Voting with bush 90% of the time. Flipping and flopping like a fish out of water on almost every issue you can think of. Not to mention his involvement with the savings and loan debacle. Plus the fact that he has flat out lied about his remarks about his grasp of the economy. These are the reasons no one should vote for mcsame.
Palin meet all the requirements to be pres or vice, she is American born and she meets the age requirements. Their is no requirement on intelligence if there was george bush could not be president. So it would be a good idea to have an intelligence test but that would leave republicans out complete'ly.

You are not too bright with your McCain "voting with Bush 90%" of the time comment. It is ashame every American gets one vote because you are too ignorant to vote. A high percentage of Congress votes along with the president a high percentage of time for the simple fact THEY ARE VOTING ON USELESS RESOLUTIONS!!!! Why don't you take the time and look up (try half of Congress's votes and what they were for). I wouldn't want you to look up 100% of them. You couldn't handle it.
