Barack Obama Campaign Spokesman Bill Burton responds to John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate:

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Sen. Chuck Schumer says:

"After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel:

"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic."

Rep. Jim Clyburn on South Carolina ETV Radio:

"I do believe that McCain has to do something to reshuffle the cards, shake up the establishment, do something unexpected and Governor Palin has all the kinds of things that McCain might see as a way to shake things up. I think [her selection] would be something similar to Dan Quayle. Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner. Being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough. Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro.she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

Barbara Boxer:

The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.

Meanwhile, the non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain's loss of maverick reformer credentials:

"In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image - an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he's run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week," Donnelly said.

"This selection raises plenty of questions," Donnelly continued. "She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she's been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain's extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we've seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration."

Obama distanced himself from some of the harsher criticisms of Palin, the Politico reports:

"I think that, uh, you know, campaigns start getting these, uh, hair triggers and, uh, the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," he said, according to the pool report, apparently criticizing his staff for going overboard, as he did occasionally in the primary.

He was referring to a more gracious statement of congratulations he issued later with Biden, which he then reiterated.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person ... with a terrific personal story.

"I'm sure that she will help make the case for Republicans, unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket."

"He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies," he said.

"But the fact that she ... will soon be nominated ... is one more indicator of this country moving forward ... one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."

I was researching Palin. After some serious digging, I am sorry but she was a poor choice. If the target is to bring in Hillary supporters, Hillary she definately not. Her hunting policies in Alaska are appalling, her and McCain's experience combined is NOT as impressive as Biden and Obama ( if McCain's tactic is to make experience an issue). We are not even going to go into her current investigation of attemptting to get her ex brother in law fired or about her 17 year old pregnant daughter b/c that's the private. I'm looking into what she can bring to the country and the answer is not enough. She is not even sure what all the duties are of a VP and if McCain toppled over tomorrow ( God Forbid), I would not feel safe with this woman at the helm. We are not going to even TOUCH the UNION issue b/c Republicans have ALWAYS fought against unions and raising the minimum wage. McCain when women stepped out and voted for Hillary, they voted for a woman that they felt could deliver, This lady does not have the goods. SHe's cute to look at but she lacks substance. I hope she does better in person to convince me than what she has on paper. Atleast if Obama died tomorrow ( again God forbid) I'd rather Biden at the helm than her. BTW McCain, we know how you really felt about MLK so please drop the pretense

Ok after sleeping on this pick for several days if elected this is how it will play out.

Beverly Leslie (John McCain) and Karen Walker (Sarah Palin) will have a Martini Party during Inauguration. Benge, Beverly Leslie business associate will move into the White House as a domestic partner and Karen Walker will recommend that Jack Daniels and Jonny Walker Red be appointed to the Supreme Court.

Former Governor of NJ Jim McGreevy will be appointed as Head of State and Senator Stevens as Head of Transportation. The White House will be painted Hot Pink and the USA property value will soar. Thus, the economy will be back on tract. Awesome plan.

NOTE: As a register Democrat in NJ who has never votes Republican, if these talking points are stress to the media I will have to reconsider my Party affiliations.

And has anyone mentioned yet that McCain picked her after meeting her once, for an hour, and a telephone call? I mean, come on people.

She's not his choice. I can guess who did select her, though.

Someone mentioned Rove. At first I didn't think much of the comment, now, I'm POSITIVE this was his doing. But even for Rove, why not Hutchinson or Dole. What, too old? I mean this is just mind boggling and beyond any kind of rational thinking for McCain to do this to the country he 'supposedly' love. Forget his age and bouts with cancer, people pass everyday from other unexpected illnesses like Tim Russert, George Carlin, Bernie Mac, Isaac Hayes. Not to mention just accidents, plane crashes(Payne Stewart, car crashes(Adm. John B. Hayes). This is just astounding that this man would chance our country being run by the Mayor of Wasilla. I use Wasilla because she was mayor longer than she was Gov.

Truth. No vetting team went to Alaska. They met once before he chose her.

Or maybe she was 'selected' for him...wouldn't that be a hoot?

It's not a setback. It just shows how calculating and irresponsible the neocon movement it. I don't even want to say Republicans because I think they blanched at this choice. Now everyone is trying to put on a brave face. I don't know why the Republican party lets itself be led around by the nose by the neo cons. It's worse than the Democrats and the DLC.

Seriously, do you only hang with liberal women? I'm amazed at how many women posting here do not respect or have close conservative women friends.

They do a lot in this world. I may not agree with their stance on abortion, but goodness! I certainly respect them.

The best strategy is to ignore her. Completely ignore her. It looks like they are already doing that.

He sold his soul and now sells the nation short for the sake of political advantage!

Palin's "experience" is as much as a high school principal or the head of the P.T.A. has. She is a glorified administrator responsible for mundane tasks like staffing, planning and budget control. She fought corruption, yeah yeah. The corruption was so bad, anyone who fought it would come out smelling like a rose.

She fired the entire State Board of Agriculture. because they disagreed with her opinion to try to save a failing business (Matanuska Maid, the State’s largest dairy). Then she hired new people who agreed with her. Is that fighting corruption?

She is the only one who has stood up to big oil and she has fought corruption in her own party and attacked and fought Republican party bosses. So far that's the 2 things I can say for her. You may be right that anyone who fought the corruption would look good but the point is that no one else was willing to fight it. You may not like her but you have to give her her due on that.

Her stance on oil is murky. And her fight against corruption greatly benefited her own career path. I'm not saying she doesn't deserve credit for doing the right thing. But I just don't feel like I know enough about this person. She's not vetted.

I'd also like to know where conservatives stand on taxing the oil companies. When Palin does it, it's heroic. When Obama proposes it, it's socialism. Which is it?

There's a terrific and scathing article on RCP this morning about how Palin, in her own way, has made a mockery of O.

She's the true change agent. He talks about it.

She's the one who took on the Republican party in Alaska. He talks about it. Meanwhile, he's surrounded himself with old-style politicians.

She's the one who has won the hearts of Alaskans with her people first platform. Meanwhile he talks about it.

You'll enjoy it. It's a fun read.

Yes, I am a democrat voting for Barak but, I am disappointed in Mc Cain"s decision to elect Palin as a VP.. He had so many other choices in men and woman. This really scares me because he left his first wife for a beauty queen and now he has chosen another to be responsible for the US in a pinch or whatever!
Everyone has the right to make a decision and vote. Everyone should wake up the US is in a bad situation. If he becomes president what is going to happen??? I am scared!!!!

His first wife was a beauty queen, as was second wife Cindy (rodeo queen). Now he picks a VP who is a beauty queen. Am I the only one who sees a pattern here?

You would think that as the Commander In Chief of the Alaska National Guard that she might have given the war in Iraq some thought instead of saying that she had not.

The Dems should concentrate on "pouncing" on McSame rather than a lightweight Governor of a state with 3 electoral votes. Attack, Attack, Attack McSame on his supposed strength, his maverickyness which is in tatters. Point out his hypocrisy and his many flip-flops in the interest merely of his own personal ambition.

This pick doesn't change anything about what I suspect the outcome of the election comes down to.

Campaigning, advertising, money...all of that is peripheral.

This election still comes down to turnout among young voters...the ones that will have to live with the consequences of what we do now for the longest.

With some cynicism, the only thing I can say for sure is that, whoever wins, America will have gotten the president it deserves.

An 80% approval rating while 87% of Alaskans are positive that she's lying about her hand in having or trying to have her ex brother-in-law fired. Governor Palin appears to be very well-spoken, an advocate of political reform and yes a self-described hockey mom. But she's also a blatant liar who didn't think her plan to attempt to cover up her oldest daughters pregnancy would ever come back to haunt her.
