Barack Obama Campaign Spokesman Bill Burton responds to John McCain's choice of Alaska Governor Sarah Palin as his running mate:

"Today, John McCain put the former mayor of a town of 9,000 with zero foreign policy experience a heartbeat away from the presidency. Governor Palin shares John McCain's commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, the agenda of Big Oil and continuing George Bush's failed economic policies -- that's not the change we need, it's just more of the same."

Sen. Chuck Schumer says:

"After the great success of the Democratic convention, the choice of Sarah Palin is surely a Hail Mary pass. It is a real roll of the dice and shows how John McCain, Karl Rove et al realize what a strong position the Obama-Biden team and Democrats in general are in in this election. Certainly the choice of Palin puts to rest any argument about inexperience on the Democratic team and while Palin is a fine person, her lack of experience makes the thought of her assuming the presidency troubling. I particularly look forward to the Biden-Palin debate in Missouri."

Rep. Rahm Emanuel:

"Is this really who the Republican Party wants to be one heartbeat away from the Presidency? Given Sarah Palin's lack of experience on every front and on nearly every issue, this Vice Presidential pick doesn't show judgment: it shows political panic."

Rep. Jim Clyburn on South Carolina ETV Radio:

"I do believe that McCain has to do something to reshuffle the cards, shake up the establishment, do something unexpected and Governor Palin has all the kinds of things that McCain might see as a way to shake things up. I think [her selection] would be something similar to Dan Quayle. Dan Quayle proved to be sort of an embarrassment as a campaigner. Being thrust on a national stage like that could be very tough. Now Mondale tried to shake things up by going with Geraldine Ferraro.she proved to be a disaster as a running mate. And as a campaigner, she was absolutely awful. And so I just think that it is very risky for McCain to do this, but it may be all he has left."

Barbara Boxer:

The vice president is a heartbeat away from becoming president, so to choose someone with not one hour's worth of experience on national issues is a dangerous choice.

If John McCain thought that choosing Sarah Palin would attract Hillary Clinton voters, he is badly mistaken.

The only similarity between her and Hillary Clinton is that they are both women. On the issues, they could not be further apart.

Sen. McCain had so many other options if he wanted to put a woman on his ticket, such as Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Sen. Olympia Snowe -- they would have been an appropriate choice compared to this dangerous choice.

In addition, Sarah Palin is under investigation by the Alaska state legislature, which makes this more incomprehensible.

Meanwhile, the non-partisan group Campaign Money Watch responded that the pick underscores McCain's loss of maverick reformer credentials:

"In choosing Governor Palin, Senator McCain is clearly trying to shore up his past maverick reformer image - an image that is now in tatters due to the type of campaign he's run and the big money lobbyists he depends on every day of the week," Donnelly said.

"This selection raises plenty of questions," Donnelly continued. "She bills herself as a reformer, but has been silent on whether she supports public financing of elections in her own state. As governor of an oil-producing state, she's been a friend to Big Oil. Given John McCain's extensive fundraising from Big Oil, her selection raises concerns of whether the McCain-Palin ticket will promise the same access for oil companies and their lobbyists that we've seen for nearly eight years from the Bush-Cheney administration."

Obama distanced himself from some of the harsher criticisms of Palin, the Politico reports:

"I think that, uh, you know, campaigns start getting these, uh, hair triggers and, uh, the statement that Joe and I put out reflects our sentiments," he said, according to the pool report, apparently criticizing his staff for going overboard, as he did occasionally in the primary.

He was referring to a more gracious statement of congratulations he issued later with Biden, which he then reiterated.

"I haven't met her before. She seems like a compelling person ... with a terrific personal story.

"I'm sure that she will help make the case for Republicans, unfortunately the case is more of the same, and so ultimately John McCain is at the top of the ticket."

"He wants to take the country in the wrong direction, I'm assuming Gov. Palin agrees with him and his policies," he said.

"But the fact that she ... will soon be nominated ... is one more indicator of this country moving forward ... one more hit against that glass ceiling. I congratulate her and look forward to a vigorous debate."

Democrates love her actually !!!

She TAXES OIL COMPANY PROFITS !!

She put a claim on the EQUITY VALUE of the Natural Resource that they are taking from their state.

She then uses that EQUITY to help the Citizens of Alaska to keep property taxes low and support other programs.

She is doing what G.W. Bush refuses to do!!!!!!

Bush should collect Royalities off businesses who take Natural Resources off Public Lands and use the Equity to help the American people.

Once the Natural Resources are gone they are GONE!!

The money collected could devolpe new technology to replace that Natural Resource.

Palin wants polar bears taken off the endangered species list because they stand in the way of her aspirations to drill oil. (It's on CNN/Glen Beck video.) And she is even more clueless about Iraq than Bush! So I doubt the Democrats love her. From the way her popularity is dropping in Alaska, sounds like the Republicans aren't in love with Palin, either.

Diabolical choice by the oil administration party; The things they think are invisible .. Dumbed down perhaps but obviously they needed to GET this woman away from the dirty little secret known as corrupt alaskan oil. If like me you see Ak Sen Ted Stevens as dirty since 1969 serving the criminals in the industry. The truths about the guy go way beyond the minimal charges and so they need to do this VP choice to keep the golden goose a laying. Wont work though, it seems like the Reps have thrown this election with a larger concern at stake than winning the whitehouse!

The GOP mouth pieces are playing up she is the"commander in Chief" of the Alaska National Guard. Can someone tell me what was her last orders issued to the National Guard. I guess to those chickenhawks that counts, as a veteran and a father of three current serving soldiers that really concerns me. The question must be asked would you trust her with your childs life. For me the answer is hell no.

Here too. If she can go on TV and tell all and sundry where her son is going to be stationed in Iraq, with what battalion and in what area doing what duty, putting him and his battalion at grave risk, she is a danger to this country and to the lives of our servicemen and women. And she is wearing a blue star pin, reserved for people who have a loved one currently serving. She has no right to wear that pin. Her son is still at home.

She's not the one who spent 147 days in the Senate before deciding to run for President, with a VP pick who's had 36 years. If you think 147 days in the senate prepare you to be president of the United States I've got a bridge to sell you.

Well, that's a matter of opinion. I think they needed a puppet. That's been my opinion since Day 1. And so far, he's not done a lot to unravel my assessment.

Biden as VP. Pelosi grins like a love-sick puppy when she talks about him. Brazile and Dean go on the road in the middle of the primary to pretend to be neutral while making sure they do the maximum damage to Hill and support O.

He's the Dem insider boyz dream-come-true, earmarks and all.

Take those 147 days, if that count is indeed correct, and look what he accomplished in that period of time. And look at the broader record.

Obama has eight years experience as a State Senator, and three years as a Senator in congress. In Illinois, he passed health care for children and reformed police interrogation methods to protect the rights of those arrested while improving conviction records. Hailed broadly by police in the state. In congress, he has been responsible for three significant bills, which PASSED in the senate and are now law. They address proliferation of loose n.ukes, ethics and open government, and the treatment of vets at Walter Reed. He has voted on a number of issues of national importance, sat on committees in the Senate, and run the best organized political campaign most analysts have ever seen. That campaign organization is evidence of great executive skill, and a window into how well organized and effective his administration will be.

I supported Hillary and was disappointed when she lost. I was undecided on who I would vote for in November swaying from the green party to Obama, but McCain’s pick helped me decide. Sarah isn’t Hillary and I believe McCain insults our intelligents by thinking just because his vp choice is a woman that we can’t tell the different. Hillary and Sarah are miles apart on the issues especially on women’s rights, so I will not take a chance on voting for the green party I will vote Obama. To quote a great woman no way no how no McCain.

What gets me the most about McCain and the Republicans is their steadfast refusal to treat women like they have a brain. Just because they pick a woman (who is anti-Hillary), do they really think all women will flock to Palin? Don't they understand that every Hillary Clinton supporter was listening intently to Hillary, herself? And Hillary made the most passionate speech, of goals for all women, of the future, of what is best for our country. Then Hillary Rodham Clinton cast her full support for Barack Obama, even calling for his nomination!

What part of that didn't the Republicans understand?

The real test of women's liberation is, unfortunately thanks to John McCain's scheme, now going to be a vote protecting women's rights -- against a candidate who is merely using a woman to attract votes. (Like women have never seen that ploy before!)

WILL WE RECOGNIZE IT WHEN IT HAPPENS? IS IT OVER? REPUBLICAN BRAND DEAD?

No BLAZE of GLORY here. The Republicans just CUT and RAN! Recognize THE END!
For all the football fans that have used the analogy of the VP pick being a HAIL MARY, I think the pick is more like a QUICK KICK (punting on 3rd down) from deep on your side of the field.

I am sure we never knew what would mark the official DEATH of the Republican brand. Well, folks, I THINK WE JUST WITNESSED IT. (Play Taps here) Bow your head for a MOMENT of SILENCE.

No end zone celebration necessary, they just gave us the ball and are headed for the locker room.

I read it and there are some good points and a couple of bad ones. Basically, I agree that this should be mainly about John McCain and his inability to make thoughtful, rational decisions. Common sense says, after all McCain's ranting that Obama is "too inexperienced to lead America," this should have precluded McCain from picking a VP with even less experience!

"Do as I say, not as I do." Isn't that the definition of hypocracy?
Is that the kind of president we need?

Here goes: 1) "hasbeens" is actually two words, and hyphenated; 2) "its" should contain an apostrophe to indicate that "it's" (Ha ha!) a contraction of "it is"; and finally, 3) you said "your" when you actually meant "you're" (There's that pesky apostrophe, again.)

Judging by your egregious lack of command of written English, I seriously doubt the validity of ANYTHING you say regarding politics!

At least one presidential candidate has the ba**s to pick a female running mate. BO says he didn't want business as usual in Washington, so he picked a VP who has spent his entire career in Washington. Hmmm. Will women vote for the Republican ticket just because a woman is on it. The only people who think that also think that African Americans will vote for another African American regardless of his/her position on the issues.

The BO campaign and supporters would get more women to vote for BO is they stopped with the sexist attacks on any woman running for office. During the primary, Obama et al never expressed outrage about how Hillary CLinton was treated because it helped them win. It's hard to get past that fact or to believe that Obama recognizes discrimation, unless it is directed at him.

The balls to pick a female....

How many repub females are available with a decent education and a minimal understanding of the duties of a VP? She admits to having none.

Took a lot of balls to pick the least qualified female on that list....so the question is why her and what did he think he would gain? She hasn't even been vetted.

The real problem is that he chose anyone who is so palpably unfit for the position and then chose to defer her vetting. He is the one with the problem. It will cost him plenty.

First, this isn't about Sarah Palin's gender. It's about her lack of experience as a VP with a serious chance of inheriting the presidency. John McCain is 72 and with known health problems (in fact, so bad he won't release his medical records for review of the American people); if elected, McCain will be the OLDEST person to become president!

Second, Obama isn't discriminating by picking a man for VP. He's choosing the best person. He's looking for someone with character and experience. Biden was the favorite, even before the announcement. I love Hillary, would have supported her if she'd won the presidential nomination, but she took herself out of the VP job because she went hardball. She rolled the dice for "all or nothing." And lost.

Third, if McCain "has the ba**s to pick a female running mate" he should have picked someone like Kay Bailey Hutchison of Texas. Someone with substantial experience and of political stature. Someone who can tell McCain "no" if necessary. (Which is probably why she didn't get the job.)
