Boston Globe :

John McCain's vice-presidential pick, Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, is an evangelical Protestant with a strong record of opposition to abortion and an openness to teaching creationism in the public schools.

Palin is the mother of five children, one of whom was born with Down Syndrome. She learned that her son had Down Syndrome when she was four months pregnant, and she told the Associated Press in May that she never considered ending the pregnancy. "We've both been very vocal about being pro-life," she said in the AP interview. "We understand that every innocent life has wonderful potential." Palin also said of her son, whose name is Trig Paxon Van Palin, "I'm looking at him right now, and I see perfection. Yeah, he has an extra chromosome. I keep thinking, in our world, what is normal and what is perfect?"

And I thought McCain was the one who wanted to refight old wars. Scopes Monkey Trial (1925)??? or how about Kitzmiller v. Dover Area School District (2005) where the judge ruled 'Teaching intelligent design in public school biology classes violates the Establishment Clause of the First Amendment to the Constitution of the United States (and Article I, Section 3 of the Pennsylvania State Constitution) because intelligent design is not science and "cannot uncouple itself from its creationist, and thus religious, antecedents." '

Creationism in public schools is nothing more than evangelical christianity masquerading as intelligent thought whose teaching causes the devolution of the human intellect.

Why would they pick this woman? I don't doubt her ability to shoot down a 400-pound bear, but how is that relevant experience?

They picked her because in places where they want to steal female votes, a fair amount of the population are either Creationists, or pro-life, or just plain ignorant about Intelligent Design. After all, Dover, Pa. wasn't an anomaly. Biden/Obama just need to talk economics and slam Bush/McCain's
policies (past and future).

Besides, people don't vote for Vice Presidents. They just don't. If they did, Dukakis-Bensten would have thrashed Bush-Quayle.

For that matter, Humphrey-Muskie would have thrashed Nixon-Agnew too.

Does the Globe have a link to a speech or writings to back up the assertion that Palin wants to teach creationism in public schools.

If you click on the "Read the whole story here" link above, you'll see that the Globe extensively cites the Anchorage Daily News, which directly quotes Palin's statements on teaching creationism made during a debate.

THE ANTI-SCIENCE CHRISTIANS REDUX.

I find the tone people like Sarah Palin depressing. For me the view that the Bible is metaphor and should be used to help solve personal problems rather than those on a society wide scale. This is much more rational than a literal interpretation -- which Clarence Darrow so supremely demolished at Daton. Everyone finds inspiration and advice from books, TV shows, and music and the Bible is just another piece of literature in that vein.

If it were the literal truth, we would be at the mercy of not only a magical being whose whims were well documented in the book of Job but to those people who claim to speak in Its name. One miracle and all knowledge which can be used to produce the goods and services the first world has come to know and rely upon cannot be transmitted from generation to generation because this being may or may not change the very fabric of the universe to suit its whims.

So instead of having reproducible experiments and tests of understanding, we would rely on the untestable assertions of people, Mrs Lincoln's medium channeled the Emperor Constantine gave Lincoln advice -- except religious people claim to have conversations with Jesus and claim they can run governments and our lives and hold the threat of eternal damnation over us if we do not do as they say.

This is unacceptable. If I wanted to be told what to do, I'd join the Army.

She already hates science as evidenced by her environmental standards, is this a surprise? She's a far, far right-wing demagogue on every single issue. She's a cliche. She's Ann Counter with the cred of an elected office.
