What's Your Reaction?
Oprah

DENVER — First word on Barack Obama's historic nomination acceptance speech from a bevy of celebrities in attendance was decidedly partisan: "It was excellent," Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie said. "It was amazing."

"Incredible," said Jessica Alba simply, before joining Fergie, Rosario Dawson, Wilmer Valderrama and Kerry Washington at a private exit from Invesco Field. Alba was at the speech with husband Cash Warren.

Other celebrities in attendance included George Lucas with girlfriend Mellody Hardon and his daughter, Forest Whitaker with wife Keisha and Star Jones, and Daniel Dae Kim of "Lost," who posed for pictures with the Hawaii delegation.

Next for Obama and his celebrity backers?

"What I hope happens is the country doesn't forget the jubilation and excitement that's been generated here," Kim said. "And I hope it turns into something that changes the world."

will.i.am performed his speech-song "Yes We Can" with John Legend during the run-up to Obama's speech. Susan Sarandon and Anne Hathaway sang along in the stands as Sheryl Crow performed "Change is Gonna Come," and crooner Michael McDonald prompted many a flag wave with his rendition of "America the Beautiful."

___

Oprah Winfrey left Denver with the candidate she wanted, but reportedly without her eyelashes.

Story continues below

The talk-show host said she was moved to tears by Obama's speech. And those must've been some serious tears.

"I cried my eyelashes off," she said in the bowels of Invesco Field, moments after Obama accepted the nomination for president before an estimated 84,000 people.

"I think it's the most powerful thing I have ever experienced," she added, calling Obama's words "transcendent." On the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream Speech," Winfrey compared Obama's words to those of the civil-rights leader, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

"He's not an African-American candidate," she said. "He's a candidate for Americans."

Winfrey threw her support behind Obama early _ even before the Democratic primaries got under way last year. She's stayed active since, hosting rallies and fundraisers that even Obama has acknowledged have given him a boost.

Before singing the national anthem to a slowly filling stadium, Jennifer Hudson appeared lost in thought, wearing a casual gray dress and listening to iPod earphones as her handlers asked for directions to the podium. While waiting, she typed on a Sidekick.

"Fired up!" said an excited Spike Lee on the field. "Bigger than the Super Bowl!"

The only major party planned for Thursday night was an elite event sponsored by Vanity Fair and Google.

___

Among the celebrities spotted in and around the convention on Wednesday was Steven Spielberg, who directed a short film on veterans that shown at the convention. Jennifer Lopez spoke at a reception honoring children's rights activist Marian Wright Edelman. Ben Affleck read excerpts from a Howard Zinn book and made an appearance at the city's food bank for America's Second Harvest.

Affleck was joined by his wife, Jennifer Garner, at the book reading at the Starz Green Room across the street from the Pepsi Center. Also participating: Dawson, Washington, Taye Diggs, Hill Harper and Josh Brolin.

___

Also on Wednesday:

_ The Black Eyed Peas performed a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium for the Creative Coalition. Fergie praised Hillary Rodham Clinton's Tuesday-night speech, saying Clinton "really spoke to me as a woman. And I think she spoke to a lot of people in that way."

_ Politicians including former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner attended a ONE Campaign party featuring a Kanye West performance. Also in attendance: Whitaker, Kal Penn, Jamie Foxx and director Davis Guggenheim.

_ Muhammad Ali sat in the convention audience.

_ Fran Drescher, Ashley Judd and Joy Bryant joined Lopez at the reception honoring Edelman.

_ Hathaway and others gathered at a morning reception honoring Annette Bening for her work narrating the documentary "14 Women," about women in the U.S. Senate.

_ Big Boi of Outkast was at the airport on his way out of town after hosting a Radio One show where he interviewed John Legend, among others.

i don't really think celebrity endorsements are what obama's campaign needs. imho it would be better if hollywood would shut up for a while, while the undecided are deciding, and let the candidate close the deal.

I don't think there are any undecideds. There haven't been since the primaries. You are either a repuke or a democrat. It's utter nonsense to think otherwise. I say everyone who supports Obama needs to say so. I don't care where they come from. Obama/Biden08

Those of us who think there are no undecideds simply live in parts of the country that are overwhelmingly blue or red. (And/or only rub elbows with politically like-minded neighbors). There are *plenty* of independents, socially moderate Republicans, and "Reagan Democrats" in the country. Many live in PA, OH, MI and other rush belt states that will decide the election, because these states are so evenly decided between solidly Democratic and Republican households.

I'm an independent ex-Republican (never a conservative) who was dreading having to choose between Senator Clinton and, frankly, any of the Republican Candidates. I decided to give Obama a look, and man was I surprised! He's the real deal. He's been almost as productive in the Senate as Clinton or McCain (I looked at major legistlation they sponsored, took the # of significant bills divided by years in the Senate. Usually a freshman Senator looks out of place with this type of comp, but Obama was right with the other two.) I read his books, and studied his past. He is impressive. Then I heard him speak in Denver, during the primaries, and that cemented the deal. I acknowledge his relative lack of experience, and think his judgement and abilities overshadow this drawback. McCain has experience, but doesn't seem to have learned anything from it. I do think there are plenty of people who are not strongly one way or the other, and haven't yet bothered to dig into the candidate histories for themselves.... and these people can be reached. I will try. Obama-Biden 2008!

If you noticed none of these celebrities were focused on during the coverage. Personally I would have loved to see Ali.

Yes, I agree, and the reason would be the culmination of everyones' efforts to get Obama elected.

Tears of joy are the best.

So you are a celebrity, yes, I've heard there are amateur porno movies being circulated.

Unfortunately, trailer-park dwelling hicks in the Midwest and South don't want to have a beer with him, so he doesn't stand a chance. Ignorance and fear now rule this country, and "the deciders" (Midwest/South) will never pick anybody but a lily-white Republican old man to occupy the White House. Doesn't matter how dumb he is or how misguided his policies, that's what the 'Murkans want. So let's all raise our cans of Pabst, munch on some pork rinds and get used to the idea of McSame in the White House for four or eight years. God bless America; praise Jeezis.

Hey! Them are fighting words but somehow always expected! Sigh! I consider myself extra blessed to live on the beautiful prairie of this great nation. Yep! I am awakened by the sound of singing birds and horses naying and find it reassuring but it doesn't mean I don't know what's going or don't understand what is at stake.

No matter where we lay our weary heads at night we are all in this together and while ignorance knows no borders neither does hope. Yes! There will always be folks who vote against their own best interest because of fear or lack of knowledge or both but location is not the culprit so fear not. May I remind you that we in the Midwest are the folks that gave you Al Gore, BilL & Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama!

I think it's the big city suburbs on the coasts that need the most enlightening. Since I am sure you must live close to a few. " How about you take the time you are spending belittling others and educate your neighbors of the possibility of the change we can actually achieve if we work as one!"

Probably you are right. That means the education will be so bad, we will be importing more engineers from India; the healthcare will be so bad more people will be uninsured; women will have abortions in alleys; the economy will continue to sink;oil prices will continue to soar while they will continue to promise to drill here drill now; more war possibly with Iran; going back to cold war, etc. Good luck, everybody.

How wonderfully refreshing to have an articulate, inspiring President after living through 8 years of a bumbling, embarassing, fear-monger in the White House.

I will be happy to watch in these next few months while the latest Republican hypocrite is buried under a sea of dissillusioned Americans who have collectively pulled back the curtain and exposed Republican lies for what they are.

McCain's policies have been proven ineffective, his politics has become shameful, his party has been proven a failure, and hypocricy is become now become evident. This pick is nothing but a desperate and transparent attempt to play the game of identity politics that Republicans have used to deride Democrats for years.

I can't wait for her to face Joe Biden in the VP debate.

Joanie,
Those celebreties know they will pay more taxes...Obama knows he will pay more taxes but they are Democrates. They know you can not have a 21st century nation with 18th century policies. Taxes build bridges, schools, roads, hire cops, teachers and armies... what we had was built by a Democratic administration...the Republican administration used it up. That Republican administration took what was a forward looking country to more poverty, less educated, and angrier. We vote in these republicans with trust, then have to return back to the Democrates to fix what they have done. Americans are slow learners. I do not paying taxes for my own country and neighbors...but not to throw into a black hole of Iraq, not when I do not have health insurance.

I can't believe how cynical and snarky people are regarding "celebrities". I am sure these "celebrities" have something better to do than dealing with 85,000 people and making appearences. Evidently, they are trying to help the cause of Obama/Biden. So they talk the talk AND walk the walk; and still get criticized. They could have just sent a check and a card or made a phone call. Give the devil their due. Ask yourself, how have you gone out of your way to help the cause you believe in?

Oprah, Obama and Rev Wright, were members of the Trinity church. Oprah left in the 90s because it did not serve her ambitions. Barack left for the same reason. The realest of the 3 is Rev. Wright who rightly pointed out that Barack is just a politician doing what politicians do. Is that change we can believe in?
