Oprah

DENVER — First word on Barack Obama's historic nomination acceptance speech from a bevy of celebrities in attendance was decidedly partisan: "It was excellent," Black Eyed Peas singer Fergie said. "It was amazing."

"Incredible," said Jessica Alba simply, before joining Fergie, Rosario Dawson, Wilmer Valderrama and Kerry Washington at a private exit from Invesco Field. Alba was at the speech with husband Cash Warren.

Other celebrities in attendance included George Lucas with girlfriend Mellody Hardon and his daughter, Forest Whitaker with wife Keisha and Star Jones, and Daniel Dae Kim of "Lost," who posed for pictures with the Hawaii delegation.

Next for Obama and his celebrity backers?

"What I hope happens is the country doesn't forget the jubilation and excitement that's been generated here," Kim said. "And I hope it turns into something that changes the world."

will.i.am performed his speech-song "Yes We Can" with John Legend during the run-up to Obama's speech. Susan Sarandon and Anne Hathaway sang along in the stands as Sheryl Crow performed "Change is Gonna Come," and crooner Michael McDonald prompted many a flag wave with his rendition of "America the Beautiful."

___

Oprah Winfrey left Denver with the candidate she wanted, but reportedly without her eyelashes.

Story continues below

The talk-show host said she was moved to tears by Obama's speech. And those must've been some serious tears.

"I cried my eyelashes off," she said in the bowels of Invesco Field, moments after Obama accepted the nomination for president before an estimated 84,000 people.

"I think it's the most powerful thing I have ever experienced," she added, calling Obama's words "transcendent." On the 45th anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I have a Dream Speech," Winfrey compared Obama's words to those of the civil-rights leader, Franklin Delano Roosevelt and Abraham Lincoln.

"He's not an African-American candidate," she said. "He's a candidate for Americans."

Winfrey threw her support behind Obama early _ even before the Democratic primaries got under way last year. She's stayed active since, hosting rallies and fundraisers that even Obama has acknowledged have given him a boost.

___

Before singing the national anthem to a slowly filling stadium, Jennifer Hudson appeared lost in thought, wearing a casual gray dress and listening to iPod earphones as her handlers asked for directions to the podium. While waiting, she typed on a Sidekick.

"Fired up!" said an excited Spike Lee on the field. "Bigger than the Super Bowl!"

The only major party planned for Thursday night was an elite event sponsored by Vanity Fair and Google.

___

Among the celebrities spotted in and around the convention on Wednesday was Steven Spielberg, who directed a short film on veterans that shown at the convention. Jennifer Lopez spoke at a reception honoring children's rights activist Marian Wright Edelman. Ben Affleck read excerpts from a Howard Zinn book and made an appearance at the city's food bank for America's Second Harvest.

Affleck was joined by his wife, Jennifer Garner, at the book reading at the Starz Green Room across the street from the Pepsi Center. Also participating: Dawson, Washington, Taye Diggs, Hill Harper and Josh Brolin.

___

Also on Wednesday:

_ The Black Eyed Peas performed a concert at the Fillmore Auditorium for the Creative Coalition. Fergie praised Hillary Rodham Clinton's Tuesday-night speech, saying Clinton "really spoke to me as a woman. And I think she spoke to a lot of people in that way."

_ Politicians including former Virginia Gov. Mark Warner attended a ONE Campaign party featuring a Kanye West performance. Also in attendance: Whitaker, Kal Penn, Jamie Foxx and director Davis Guggenheim.

_ Muhammad Ali sat in the convention audience.

_ Fran Drescher, Ashley Judd and Joy Bryant joined Lopez at the reception honoring Edelman.

_ Hathaway and others gathered at a morning reception honoring Annette Bening for her work narrating the documentary "14 Women," about women in the U.S. Senate.

_ Big Boi of Outkast was at the airport on his way out of town after hosting a Radio One show where he interviewed John Legend, among others.

Not trying to be as confrontational as usual... Great oratory... Was Muhammed Ali recognized by the DNC during the tribute to Dr King? If he was not he should have been, He is a true giant in the AA community ...His stance during Viet Nam was heroic and he still is vilified .

People need to stop being so ignorant, celebrities are also citizens who pay their taxes also, in some of the most difficult days of our life has kept us entertained, and last but not least, have the right to vote and a freedom of expression ...!!! Therefore, we must stop acting as ignorant and stupid as the McCain people does; is one thing to hate a movie, something else is to cast our view entirely based on groups labels such as "celebrities" ... America, grow up! Think for yourself, oh what; we are so stupid to do anything now McCain ask us to do without taking a pause to digest his command, and then express our own opinion? Think about that!!!

McCain attacks Obama when he can't be the same even if he tries! He took money from "celebrities", the Hiltons now less, but made fun of them.

Republicans only like celebrities when they're Republican, and then especially when they hold office. They have a great tradition of electing popular actors to political office.

How sad for some of you. Obama brings hope and some are still just looking for the hidden message or trying to throw a wet blanket on the enthusiasm generated. I love the Clintons (call me crazy) but I'm glad the Obamas are in the driver's seat. Positive vibrations all around.

We've had enough numbing by; the war on terror, 9/11, bank closures, inflation, low wages and job losses. Someone tell me that isn't what's really happening. Should we really be giving further power to people who already have wasted that power and are not all that aware of the average American--lost count of how many houses you 'own' in trusts and LLCs???

No amount of b.s. is going to give the GOP momentum to overcome this surge.

Some of us are glad to be making enough money to even pay our federal taxes in this economic downturn, not looking to get richer as much as keep what we have.

I will never forget the attacks on the Clintons. Never. I was pushed out of the Democratic Party entirely.

It's just that simple.

While everyone was bashing Hill because she "made" remarks that were obvious to any dolt.....he has no experience......not one Democrat said, "What have we been doing to her if she is the nominee?"

Not one.

It was all about Clinton-bashing. It was Republican, in the worst sense. It sickened me.

Now, Mac has chosen a woman.

The choice is very clear for a great many women in this country.

You haven't been pushed out of the Democratic party. You choose to leave, and now you're going to vote to put a woman who has less experience than Obama a heartbeat away from the Presidency. Considering McCain's age and health history, that's a big risk.

Funny how the experience criteria goes out of the window for you, Puma, when a woman is on the ticket.

A woman who has how much national political experience? Oh wait --- none.

Who has been in Washington how long? Oh wait --she hasn't.

Who has created how many partisan policies in the Senate or House? Oh wait -- none.

Well at least she has the best managed state, right? Oh wait -- that's Tim Kane's Virginia.

Okay so at bare minimum she has no scandals, right? Oh crap --- she does.

But she's got ovaries, so that's good enough, right? Clearly for you Puma -- but certainly NOT for me when she could inherit the presidency.

Ann,
I want you to find me one thing that Obama has said mean or negative about Hillary. He always treated her with respect and even stood up for her. Not like what she did to him...and that McCain is useing in negative ads against Obama. Stop confusing what Obama supporters and the media has said with what came out of Obama's mouth. Are you a person of honor or not? So you would rather a ticket that will end R v W then to vote with a pro choice, pro woman Obama? McCain voted against Pay Equity for women, against the Violence Against Women act (that Biden wrote)..but Palin has the parts of a woman and that is all that counts? Being anti gays, anti choice, anti progress is ok...she has a Vigina.

I think its is very important to have a leader who can communicate with the people and Obama can communicate with celebs and plain old people like myself. The great communicators in the party have been Kennedy , Clinton in the last fifty years. But Obama is the best in my life time of 66years. I am a 66 year old white male and pretty cynical but was nearly brought to tear by Obama speech.

hear, hear. 62-year old here. At my house nobody was ashamed of the tears streaming down our faces. All of us hard-headed business people and accountants and teachers and lawyers and doctors. Plus a houseful of 20-30 year old kids. Oh, and babies - yes, a few. More on the way (lots more). Headache much? Am I too old for 17 babies? argh.
We need to get our country back. The country we love. The country that makes us neighbors and friends. The country that other nations look to, dream about, aspire to.
We need to be ready for another Katrina, we need safe bridges, we need to save our coastlines.
We need a future. A future for all these kids. A future we're proud to plan for. A future we're proud to hand to our blood sons and daughters.
We need our self-respect back.

And we don't need to drill offshore to get 2 cents per gallon savings in umpteen years, watching oil spills shut down the Mississippi.
We don't need false patriotism. That flag is ours too. Those soldiers are our sons and daughters and brothers and sons. We shed our blood for this cockamaimie oil war.
We don't need to be called warriors. We need to be called Americans again.

We need our souls back. Thank you Senator. We just might get there, by the grace of God.

You sound like a nice guy, and there's no shame in crying. Perhaps a few less babies might help mother earth get her act back together. As a neighbour of your fine country, I must point out that the "country that other nations look to, dream about, aspire to" has been tarnished somewhat in recent years. You have to reestablish that status, it is no longer a given and should not be assumed or taken for granted. I'm very sorry that your sons and daughters were sent to fight a meaningless war, but America did re-elect Bush in 2004, well after they knew what he stood for, and somehow I suspect he did not get your vote. So what the world struggles with is why Bush got a second term if he didn't represent American values?

These celebrities work like any other person out there and their vote counts just as much. And while yes they do have a much higher level of recognition and pay it would disingenuous to say most people in America don't aspire to what they've achieved. They made it, good for them! Lastly, the bulk of celebrities -realize- how fortunate they are are by showing up and supporting their candidate-- they feel like they're making good use of their celebrity by hoping their influence holds some sway. It's great intentioned and Republican celebrities do it too, Jabbadaslut. Sounds like you're afraid of the change to come.

Hey, their votes count, too! They are concerned citizens with causes that interest them and I am glad to have anybody on board who can bring more attention. Even more interesting is that these celebrities stand to lose if taxes increase for their income range, yet they still support Obama and the democrats. Gotta give them credit for that, unlike the typical millionaire CEO, oil man, hedge fund manager, etc. The celebrities in attendance are putting greater things above their financial interests and are using their fame for good cause. I think that is great!

The cameras caught a number of tearful people in the audience. It was a moving sight. Obama's speech was great and the moment historic. I was especially moved by the sight of the Obama family with the Biden family on stage after the speech. There they were, two loving and beautiful families that seem to embody everything American families aspire to. Biden seems dedicated to his wife, kids, and grandchildren. They obviously adore him. Jill Biden seems to be the kind of person you'd like to have as a next door neighbor (maybe share a morning cup of coffee instead of beer). Obama's kids obviously adore daddy. And it was touching to see the way Michelle and Barack responded to each other at the end of that speech. I believe these two families are both the embodiment of the "family values" Republicans are so fond of usurping.

AP article hmmmmmm.

Even they could not spin the article too much. I did notice that they reported erroneously that there was only one event on Thursday night for the "elite", which is not true. I even saw a concert photo right on HuffPo that happened after the speech. Now don't tell me only the "elite" were filling a concert event. I'm sure they did not report all the people, I saw the Gold Medal Olympian Gymnast bSean Johnson standing on stagee with Jennifer Hudson. But I guess reporting that Olympians were there would be too much like patritism and pride.

Yes, Johnson lead the Pledge and Hudson sang the Anthem when the convention started yesterday. The convention was full of artists like Cheryl Crow, John Legend and Stevie Wonder...I have not any idea what concert was after the convention, it would have to go pretty far to beat who was part of the convention...it was awesome to see all the flags waving...we are ONE America. So there Republicans!

There was some very Clinton moments in that speech as well........why didn't Oprah mention that?

Bill and Hillary certainly acted with class and they should be respected for that.

Obama studied the speeches of FDR, JFK, Reagan and Clinton...........

So, Obama supporters especially, let's stop the attacks on the Clintons. You got their support and you should appreciate instead of attacking..........after all, there is no unity if the Democrat supporters keep eating their own.

Obama was right to remind people of the good economical times with Clinton....proving that Democrats can handle the economy.
