I Like ItI Don’t Like It

On Thursday night's "Daily Show," as the official Obama biography video was screening at the DNC, "The Daily Show" aired a hilarious biography video of their own. It is set to music with a booming narration and full of tag lines.

"The earthly son of a goat herder and an anthropologist, one man seems ready enough-ish to lead...."

Do you remember when John McCain went to Maine to consult with Bubba Bush about his VP Choice? I would bet that Bubba told him to choose the brilliant Governor from Alaska. Why? Because that grantees a loss for McCain. Who would run in four years? JEBB BUSH?!?!

This is satire, and I approve this message!

Come on....It's nice to be able to laugh at the stereotypes thrown on O. I didn't feel any ambivalence whatsoever.

I have been an Obama supporter from Day 1 and thought this hysterical!

It's like dizzy blond jokes. Not funny because it feeds into too many stereotypes that people find offensive.

I completely agree. Everything is reduced to a joke in this country. That's why majority of the people in this country do not understand any substantive issue that is relevant to their lives. They are more interested in dumb shows and laughters while the most crucial issues in their lives are yet to be considered. It is very disheartening.

I disagree. People who can't find humor in their own perspectives are a bore.

except the viewers of this show, statistically speaking, know a hell of a lot more than the so-called average American in substantive issues. Just because we put a funny spin on something doesnt mean we dont understand. Pretty simple.

Barack Obama is the essence of a lion - majestic and proud. The new Lion King. Roar, Obama.

I'm gonna vote for Obama -- because I think he's the best choice for president. Not because I think he will be the savior of our country. No one man can be that, not even the President. I think Obama will win the election -- but after he is sworn in, the work begins. And it's gonna take all of us to fix this country. I think Obama will be a good leader -- maybe even a great one. But let's not pin all our hopes on him alone. Cry and rejoice if you want. But for me, when I see Obama elected, my biggest emotion will be RELIEF. Maybe there WILL be hope for this country.

It was a damn funny video. Some of my fellow liberals are so humorless!

I have been an Obama supporter since the primaries, but I took it for what it was: satire! So many of his supporters are hard core and his narrative went over the top at times- even his speeches are formulaic at times. The whole election year thing has gotten surreal. The Lion King was a great way to show us that we had made him into some sort of messiah, when all we wanted was change and something new. Some parts were a little mean, but satire is best a little mean. Gulliver's Travels? A Modest Proposal? Mad Magazine? they're mean too! It wasn't mean to Obama anyhow. It was telling his supporters that they have made him into a messiah and it was a caution.

We cannot just follow him or any leader blindly into the future. As Americans we need to hold our opinions and preconceptions accountable so that we make good choices.

Ordinarily I am a huge Stewart fan but I don't buy into everything being game to poke fun at. Hope is no laughing matter.

Tchalla,

I agree that hope is no laughing matter, but I've been concerned since the begining of the Democratic primary that so many Americans have been willing to invest their hope in an obviously very clever politician rather than look within themselves to discover their own strengths and ability to pursue their dreams. Most of Obama's followers would probably call themselves Christians, a religion opposed to idolatry of any form. Even Jesus urged his followers to not worship him, but instead worship his father (mother) who is in heaven.

I am a Obama supporter but not a Obama disciple. I have concerns as to whether he is really ready for the role but I would be even more concerned should McCain win. So Obama is easily the less risky option. The hope that I personally subscribe to is the hope that some basic common sense, decency and fairness be applied in Washington. That is Obama's appeal to me. I took issue with the Stewart sketch because given the real challenges we face it diminishes any dialogue about the issues. When the focus is how something can be made "funny" or how it can be reworked to entertain seems to me that we lose because part of us ceases to listen. When we don't listen sufficiently we end up with the boneheaded result that put Bush back in the Whitehouse in 2004.

A few weeks ago, as another of Stewart's Obama jokes fell flat in the studio (but I thought it was pretty good), he chided the audience that they were permitted to laugh at him. Remember, Jon is doing the openly fake news, not like most of the rest that are fake, but pretend to be serious and real.

All Jon Stewart did was reinforce the right wing's criiticism of Obama. This piece would have been perfect coming from Fox News. Nothing funny about it, unless you're a neocon.

I have watched Jon Stewart on Obama and he obviously does not like him, as much as he tries to hide it. This piece showed his true dislike.

you must have watched a completely different Jon Stewart. After Ob am a's race speech, Stewart openly stated "finally a politician who talks to us like we are adults." There are many instances of Stewart with full admiration of Ob am a including one on Wednesday where he mocked H ill ary for continuing to have a "me me" aspect to her speeches even when it was Ob am a's moment.

finally, a political satire is supposed to be on the extreme ends. stewart is not particularly concerned about what right wingnuts will do with this clip because if they do something then stewart will make fun of them too. if you cannot take yourself lightly then this clip is not for you. i am an obama fan and i think it was hilarious. satire is supposed to mock on different levels and this clip has been successful in opening those levels. if a joke needs to be explained in such details, then it is not funny anymore.

I think that that clip was hillariously funny. I like that Lion King's part especially with Ted Kennedy and Oprah! Well done Daily shows. You have the best creative minds on TV!

BTW, I don't think that Obama will find it offensive at all. It is funny and I am sure that he will see it that way. Although, I don't know about Elton John since it is his song. Kudos to you for that laugh out loud clip.

I found the New Yorker cover funny because it showed the ridiculous lengths some people would go to attack Obama's character. I did not find this clip from the Daily Show funny at all. After 8 years of George W. Bush, with the wars, torture, abuses of power, failed foreign policy, an economy in shambles, etc... it is no wonder that 80% of Americans hope for change. It is not funny at all to ridicule this hope. The clip rightly points out the danger of putting anyone on a pedestal, but don't make fun of my hope for change; America has suffered too much under George W. Bush.

Independents for Obama!

Thats some high class material. Its funny for the demographic of the people who are mainly watching the show who happen to be high enough to laugh at themselves...and anything else. These writers are geniuses and deserve awards, it takes more talent than you think to keep a stoner entertained and actually make them remember to watch a show at a certain time....although it is on 4x a day...they understand their demographic.
