Palin

The Anchorage Daily News is reporting that many of Palin's local colleagues, even Republican, were rather stunned by her being chosen as McCain's vice president.

State Senate President Lyda Green said she thought it was a joke when someone called her at 6 a.m. to give her the news.

"She's not prepared to be governor. How can she be prepared to be vice president or president?" said Green, a Republican from Palin's hometown of Wasilla. "Look at what she's done to this state. What would she do to the nation?"

Way to go, McMondale! In Sarah Palin, you've managed to find a female Vice Presidential running mate who makes Geraldine Ferraro look like Franklin Roosevelt! You may as well give your concession speech now because this election is OVER!

Speaking of Geraldine Ferraro, she's at it again. I heard her on NPR this afternoon and she said she hadn't yet decided for whom she would vote. She is an angry woman.

Obama says "change" over and over. Palin has made "change" happen in Alaska. If the American people want "change", they should elect someone who has done it, rather than someone who only uses the word as a mantra.

Gustav is the LAST thing McGimmick needs to worry about

you got a beauty queen who was in FULL support of Obama just last month
you got a beauty queen who thinks it's cool to visit other states and carries her passport in case she needs it to get through customs
you got a beauty queen who walked around in a catsuit only 3 years ago
you got a beauty queen who thinks she can buy her morning paper from Russia since they're so close
you got a beauty queen who doesn't know what the VP does all day
you got a beauty queen who's under investigation

BUT, you got a beauty queen.

McGimmick, your mind didn't make this decision, your dyck did.

I think the operative words here are "a US Senator running for President."

Now explain to us how being mayor of a 8000 population little village in an out of the way state (by choice I should point out) equates?
Righties have no choice but to jump on the sinking ship or disavow their wise ol man leader.
Quel dilemma!

Hi virgimomof3,

You provide a great opportunity to clarify the objections of many like me (a churchgoing woman who is on several prominent issues a staunch social conservative) to rigid, backwards conservative positions. Thanks!

Palin is anti-gay:

"America may not know much about Sarah Palin, but based on what our community has seen of her, we know enough," said Joe Solmonese. "Sarah Palin not only supported the 1998 Alaska constitutional amendment banning marriage equality but, in her less than two years as Governor, even expressed the extreme position of supporting stripping away domestic partner benefits for state workers. When you can’t even support giving our community the rights to health insurance and pension benefits, it’s a frightening window into where she stands on equality."

I'm a man of color with a successful business, and my grandmother had eight children. My six aunts, and my grandmother were the strongest women I ever knew, who all overcame challenges from a male dominated society that always tried to hold them back.
I guess readers must be jealous that Palin has owned two companies over a 20 year span. That means running the operations, payroll, filing taxes, and doing the grind to help provide for a family for over 7000 days! Has Obama ever managed a payroll? Has Obama ever shopped for business insurance? Probably not. He is part of the fortunate "affirmative action chosen". He worked his free ride into Chicago politics, which hassn't lowered the crime or improved the quality of living for his constituents.
She has been effective in her executive positions as a mayor and a governor. If Americans want change from a Congress that has a 9% approval rating for getting nothing done, maybe a spunky point-guard, beauty queen, Washington outsider can do better that the good-old boys! If Americans want a better role model for their daughters than Paris Hilton, maybe Palin is the right one to look up too. She might force dinosaurs like Robert Byrd to retire! Or do they want more men making plays on their interns in Congress, while doing nothing for the PEOPLE? Pull out LEGALLY BLONDE to see how pretty women can be treated by men with big egos.

But the GOP did.

Was that a lie for political gain, or have they come to realize that Obama (and, by extension, Palin) IS qualified?

Even if we concede that Obama and Palin have similar experience (which they don't, but let's say they do for the sake of argument), how do you explain McCain's continual assertion that Obama is not qualified?

Either he has changed his mind and now believes Obama IS qualified, or he was lying before when he said Obama ISN'T qualified.

Take your pick. Either way, it reveals the true John McCain.

Oh, and by the way, oppression means telling people what to do and keeping them from doing what they want.

As a conservative, you say "no abortions", "no gay marriage", "no secular schools" and "no help for poor families".

THAT is oppression. And not particularly Christian, either.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 05:52 PM on 08/30/2008

Funny how the Republicans, once allergic to any insinuations of "oppression," now seize the word.
By the way--it's hypocrites. Hippocrates is the "first do no harm" dude from the oath thingy. Maybe once we women are all educated, and can spell and stuff, we can field some better candidates for the Republican party. Just like John McCain always told me, women "need more training" in order to compete with men of inferior expertise and seniority (google the Lily Ledbetter case--a clear case of "oppression"; McCain refused to support it just a few months ago in 2008). NOW tries to promote equal work for equal pay. I side with the Republicans on abortion, but they do not support the kid once the umbilical cord is cut. The money thing--for women not lucky enough to be on Gov. Palin's cushy, 5-kid-supporting health plan--is where women get oppressed in an undeniable way; earning less that a man for equal hard work cannot be denied statistically. I care more about that than about shoving my values down someone's throat.
Obfuscatory terms like "special interest group" are lame apparatchik-speak.
I have voted Republican before; can you say you've voted for a Democrat?

Signed,

Church-going, family-valuing Christian NOT supporting McCain

Sexism is passing over QUALIFIED people and choosing UNQUALIFIED ones because of their gender. Therefore, McCain's choice of Palin qualifies as SEXIST. Of course, he dumped his first wife for someone younger and prettier. The many qualified Republicans, including older and less attractive women like Kay Bailey Hutchison and Liddy Dole, should be steaming.

Rove is infamous for his tactics. Could Palin be his last ditch effort at assuring Bush doesn't go down in the history books and stay there as the worst president ever? He threw his support early behind mcpow, who was as close as possible to being Bush's political enemy and still be in the same party and is close to being as stupid as Bush. Then he gets mcpow to choose Santa's daughter as a running mate.

While imcpow could conceivably do a better job than UU and go down in the books as simply the second worst president ever, it;s more likely that he will never finish out his first term. Voila! Who takes over? Palin. Bush skyrockets up in the standing to third worst president of all time. Mission accomplished

Although I haven't been there in several years, as a native born son of the great State of Alaska I can tell you first hand that it's a beautiful place to live and work and raise children, but it is so very different than most of the other States. Very isolated & fiercely independent from the rest of the country. A different mentality prevails up there. The entire State consists of about 700K people, smaller than most metro areas in the lower 48. Only New Orleans feels as different as Alaska to most Americans. I just don't see how she can relate to the vast majority. She does not believe in abortion even in the case of rape or incest. It will be interesting to see her convince Hillary's base over that issue alone. It's a strange country we now live in........

I am still shaking my head over McCain’s selection of Sarah Palin. She is a woman with no national or international experience, who would be one heartbeat from the Presidency, whose qualifications are that she was part-time mayor of a town of less than 8,000, and for ten months Alaska, population under 700,000. Many hotels house more than the entire population of her home town.
As a woman, this is an insult to every more qualified woman in this nation.
IHillary Clinton, has dedicated much of her life to national and international issues, is well traveled, well informed and almost everything that Sarah Palin isn’t.
With the state our country is in at this moment., IS A RISK TAKER WHAT WE REALLY NEED? I think not!
Let's put being things in perspective. Alaska: Total population - 663,661 at the last census. Austin, Texas: greater population than the entire state of Alaska. St. Louis, Missouri:population more than FOUR TIMES the the STATE OF ALASKA. How does ten months of governing a state with less population than the city of Austin, Texas qualify being next in command for our entire country. PLEASE WOMEN, DO NOT BE FOOLED INTO THINKING THIS WILL BE THE WAY TO BREAK THE GLASS CEILING. HILLARY IS THE ONE WHO OPENED THE CRACKS. DON’T INSULT HILLARY AND HER ACHIEVEMENTS BY VOTING IN SARAH PALIN, WHO IS TRYING TO RIDE ON HER COAT TAILS.

You pose the question is a risk taker what we really need? and then you respond i think not.....how right you are so why is it that it is not okay for republicans to elect a VP with minimal experience (yet she at least has executive experiences being Governor) but it is the best idea in the world to elect Barack Obama as our President when he also lakes experience why the double standard. Maybe you didn't know that she has fought corruption in her home state and that she has an 80% approval rate and that she decided to tax big oil companies in her state just like Obama wants to do. She is a true reformer and evn though she has just had a fresh start she has done her job well instead of voting present more times than i can even remember. Obama is not what this country is about...he says tax cuts for middle-class which echoes Clinton yes your beloved Clinton said the same then turned around and taxed everyone because they are greedy to take hard working peoples money.....you should research before you decided to blab your mouth about people, and this website would be a horrible site to get real info from

From elsewhere on this site:
A reporter for the Anchorage daily, Gregg Erickson, even did an online chat with the Washington Post, in which he revealed that Palin's approval rating in the state was not the much-touted 80%, but 65% and sinking -- and that among journalists who followed her it might be in the "teens." He added: "I have a hard time seeing how her qualifications stack up against the duties and responsibilities of being president.... I expect her to stick with simple truths. When asked about continued American troop presence in Iraq, she said she knows only one thing about that (I paraphrase): no one has attacked the American homeland since George Bush took the war to Iraq."

He has proven he knows about foreign issues, that he puts a LOT of thought into something before he acts, that he gets advise from VARIOUS top people and takes it al into consideration.

It's called a democracy because 18 million people VOTED for him.

Sarah Palin is a political gimmick chosen for no other reason than to win an election, not to protect this country. If McCain believed that Palin is the BEST person to take over as president if something were to happen to him ON day one, I have no faith in his judgement at all, and most definitely don't believe his top priority is the American people.

This reminds me of when W. picked Harriet Meyers for the Supreme Court. Nice and all, but not qualified. This is W.'s twin, McCain, making a horrible selection of an obviously under-qualified individual for VP and I can't help but think that republicans are in panic. Of course the panic only comes after the shock of this choice has worn off. This is the beginning of the end of McCain's candidacy: he clearly did not put country first when selecting Palin, and his judgment is now for all to call into question. I still can't believe he made such a mistake. But it makes me smile.

I'm sorry but I have to laugh that you can honestly say that "you smell fear." For any rational thinking person to think that Mc Cain has made a good choice by picking Mrs. Palin, well you just have to be delusional. NO matter how you try to spin this, it reeks of a man who makes choices based on reaction. Reaction to the choice that Obama made, reaction to the so called "hillary" voters, and what a bad reaction it is. It smacks of political expediency at the risk to this nation. The man is 72 years old, and a melanoma cancer survivor. He is a well known adulterer, and although he has adopted a black child, never shows her in public. He hardly vetted this choice before he made his decision, but did it impulsively. Does this sound like good judgement? I don't think so. Now, even Romney, Huckabee and even Ron Paul looks godd. What a joke. No matter how you spin this, it's just plain pathetic. Wake up Republicans, you have flushed your family values down the toilet.

GOP Alaska State Senator: Palin "Not Prepared To Be Governor. How Can She Be Prepared To Be Vice President Or President?"

THIS MEANS THIS IS A QUOTE FROM AN ALASKA STATE SENATOR. They are not calling her a senator. How uneducated are you people ? Her own REPUBLICAN SENATOR thinks she's not even prepared to be Governor let alone be V.P. What an outrage!

Palin is completely unknown and I highly doubt Hillary supporters will switch to the Republican ticket just because McCain has a woman on his side. They've spent the last few YEARS getting to know Hillary, who now endorses and backs Obama. They won't get to know Palin and switch to side in 8 weeks time. This selection is highly condescending as it suggests that McCain was willing to pick ANY woman -- not necessarily a qualified one -- with the hopes that Hillary Clinton voters would vote for her just BECAUSE she's a woman. If I were a woman, I'd be highly insulted.

This shows how fickle the GOP party is. They get excited when they think they've done something new, when in reality, a woman running side by side was done already in 1984. Without knowing any factual information and jumping the gun, get excited without thinking things through. Just because McCain picked her doesn't mean he's now progressive. The only thing that has changed about McCain's whole campaign is as of today, he's 72. Older than Reagan in his second term.
