Politico:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech by satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

But officials insisted that, the convention, scheduled to open here on Monday, will go on -- albeit in a more limited and sedate form, if Hurricane Gustav stays on its projected path. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday after federal officials said Gustav could grow to a catastrophic Category 5, hitting Monday afternoon between East Texas and western Mississippi.

The GOP is secretly praying for Hurricane Gustav to make landfall so they can cancel their Convention

For sure. They dread the empty seats seen on national TV and the obvious comparison to the intellect and humor of the Dems as opposed to the GOP. I'm guessing that many of the speakers were having a hard time trying to defend McCains choice of VP. Now they are off the hook.

Pastor Hagee--McCain's lunatic preacher pal- stated numerous times that Katrina hit New Orleans because "it was planning a SINFUL Homosexual rally!"
God kept that rally from happening...God brought the storm because they were going to have a pride march on Monday August 29th!.. God prevented all of those "sinners" from rallying with the help of Katrina....
So why is God is sending Gustav right now?? During the exact moment that the RNC is about to start? This is creating a lot of conflict and stress for the RNC plans...they are loosing speakers...maybe cutting it short...
Is this because They are sinners?

"Well, I know that in our society...no one likes to hear that there is a God who has the power to correct man for his behavior that does not fall within the parameters of the word of God."--Hagee

Have the Republicans been behaving in a way that is not falling within the parameters of the True word of God? is he preventing THEIR "sinful rally" from happening for a reason? Just a thought...

Jeeeezuz..That one cracked me up.

I'm laughing as these developments to the republican/religious right connection pretty much with the same feeling I had as I laughed at Pulp Fiction. I was laughing so hard yet thinking how can I laugh at this ludicrous situation? It's so horrible!

I hope the hurricane leaves New Orleans alone.

If he does something this insensitive and unthinkable (going for the ultimate photo op and getting in the way of the serious work that needs to be done), he will fail every test of character, judgement, and temprement. If the American people do not reject this man immediately and completely for doing it (if indeed he does), they too will fail a test.

So, McCain is planning to give his speech from the United States?

Gustav is the best thing that that could have happened for the Republicans! They couldn't have remotely equaled the Democratic convention's historical proportions and enthusiasm, and the contrast would have been embarrassingly evident.

Now they can somberly and nobly claim they're "scaling back" and doing a more modest convention in acknowledgment of the serious threat to the people in the path of the hurricane. The fact that so many prominent Republicans didn't plan on attending anyway is now less noticeable and covered under the same umbrella of noble scale-back.

For Mc Cain to inflict the enormous security and newsmedia complications of a Republican Presidential nominee's acceptance speech on people in the Gulf region who need to be entirely focused on dealing with potential disaster is just another of John Mc Cain's oblivious, emotional, shoot-from-the-hip decisions.

Oblivious, emotional, shoot-from-the hip. The thought of him anywhere near the red button is just plain scary. The thought of him appointing members to the Supreme Court is just plain scary. The thought of President Palin if he keels over is just plain scary. The Republicans have been trying to control us with fear for years. Now they're really given us something fear.

For further insight into Sarah Palin, who the Republicans are trying to place a-heart-beat-away from the presidency of the most powerful nation on earth, (!) a very interesting Alaska website:

But remember, Obama is the "presumptuous" one who acts like he's already president.

Riiiiiiiight.

Wow. Exactly. Holy moly. I hadn't thought of it this way. The hypocrisy really is bottomless.

It dawned on me this morning just how irresponsible this grandstanding is. Authorities are warning everyone to get out. McCain would jeopardize the lives of his security detail, any newspeople covering this, as well as any emergency workers trying to do their jobs to keep the area secure and protect human lives. This proposed photo op at the expense of others is just another example of his inability to make decisions based on sound judgment and consideration of all those affected. In other words, he continues to imitate George Bush.

So, he couldn't wait to be elected president first. Someone should remind the pretend-president, that we can only have one president at a time. The convention can always be postponed until after the storm. The President should be given the room to do his job.
