Politico:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech by satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

But officials insisted that, the convention, scheduled to open here on Monday, will go on -- albeit in a more limited and sedate form, if Hurricane Gustav stays on its projected path. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday after federal officials said Gustav could grow to a catastrophic Category 5, hitting Monday afternoon between East Texas and western Mississippi.

This is so transparent it is actually laughable. First Bush says he will not attend convention out of respect to Gustav victims. Ironic how that may be because there are not any victims yet. Then McCain says he will give his speech from the disaster area which is even more ironic since the last time a storm of this magnitude hit the area (Kartrina in case someone forgot) these same people in charge failed to give the necessary support and aid to the victims. Now both of these politicians use this disaster to show how caring and compassionate they are. Please, spare me. Bush is not attending because of McCain's association with him and his failed record. The GOP finally realized that Bush and McCain together really hurts their cause. McCain isn't going to his own convention because already they realize they will never be able to compete with Obama in bringing in the number of folks that Obama did to the convention and it will look like a complete flop. This is going to be interesting to see this convention, I can't wait.

Yes. No matter how they slice it this hurrican reminds the world of Katrina and the result of incompetence from cronyism and the fact that republicans have the reverse midas touch.

I think it's the epitome of cowardice, by conservatives.

They OWN Bush. They sold him. Now that he's a huge political liability, they blithely pretend they didn't worship him.

Do you REMEMBER 2004? They didn't hold their noses and vote for Bush. They ADORED Bush.

Just about everyone who will speak at the repub convention is a political liability and I can't blame Rove for trying to distance his newest candidate from them. All the repub convention will do is remind people of eight years of failure, lies and deceit. What pray tell could they possibly show people at the convention as a major accomplisment of their reign of deceit. OK maybe more tax breaks for the rich but I am talking about the middle class.

kay? you will love this. Now Cheney has also opted out of attending the convention. Do you not find this hilarious that the President, Vice President, Top Talking Head GOP Governor (Arnold Schwartznegger) and the PRESIDENTIAL NOMINEE himself all will not be attending the GOP convention.

Like he cares...

He will stoop to anything. He has no ethics or morals whatsoever.

Imagine using the misery and disaster of other human beings to try and make yourself look good?

Only a Republican would do such a thing. Despicable.

I hope some of the victims call him on it!

I doubt it because I am sure they will screen anyone who will be remotely near the MSM cameras and keep them away. This is a Public Relations stunt and nothing else. And I totally agree with trollslayer that this is morally and ethically dispicable. They have no shame and will use people to promote themselves yet, these same people they use will continued to be neglected. To the Evangelical base who supports this kind of behavior I hope your are proud of the christian ethics your party displays.

this man has no shame. seriously none. I'm sure he will give the speech with sleeves rolled and be like "oh sorry I was just rescuing some young black children and women" Such BS. God I hope the American people can see through this crap.

The last place he should be going is into a disaster area. Resources that will be needed to assist victims will be diverted to his dog and pony show.

McCain should send Sarah Palin.

Sarah Palin is so tough…she digs for oil with her bare hands and doesn’t ruin her manicure.

"albeit in a more limited and sedate form"

SYMBOLISM, ANYONE ?

Free Translation: "Well, crap. There's no way we can match that convention. Effing Katrina 2.0 is going to blow my arse from here to Hokkaido. Here, honey, through a blanket over Granpa and the hamster, and let's get the hell outta here before the roof collapses."

Q. Why is the Emporer naked ?

A. The Republicans have thrown in the towel.

The headline, "McCain May Give Convention Speech from Disaster Zone" overlooks the obvious: wherever he gives it will be a disaster zone.

Shame can only be worsened by desperation which is then worsened by lunacy. All of these add up to the meaning of the McCain-Palin ticket. If anyone is duped by this team, then GOD must really hate America. There is no excuse for such blatant bumbing down of the American electorate. It's like being on an airplane in a downward spiral with someone else whose time it is to die. You try to instantly research what's so important about this person that you are being sacrificed! What you should be doing is trying to get to the pilot to help pull out. MAYBE THE AMERICAN SPIRIT WILL HELP US PULL OUT OF THIS TERRIBLE DOWNWARD SPIRAL MCCAIN HAS PUT US IN.

If he exploits a disaster for political ends most Americans will find it to be disgraceful. He'll lose by 20% in November if the Republicans really follow through and do that.

If he makes his speech from New Orleans, cue the picture of he and Bush cutting the birthday cake while New Orleans drowned.

The epitome of exploitation to take advantage of this impending tragedy. SHAMEFUL!!!!! I have friends in the Mobile bay area and I know they would be raging mad if McCain tried to use their crisis for his gain.

This how Bush and Cheney have led this country. Exploiting disasters and crisis situations to their own ends. Why should McCain be any different.
