Politico:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech by satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

But officials insisted that, the convention, scheduled to open here on Monday, will go on -- albeit in a more limited and sedate form, if Hurricane Gustav stays on its projected path. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday after federal officials said Gustav could grow to a catastrophic Category 5, hitting Monday afternoon between East Texas and western Mississippi.

McCain is demonstrating that he doesn't give a crap for this country, if he inserts himself into such a situation and diverts resources at such a time, just to make himself look Presidential. Perhaps, they can find some bodies for him to stand beside, so he'll look emphathetic?

This is like the theme of the Republican party..destruction. They can't even have their convention without disaster. It speaks alot about the party of Lincoln, who has lost its way. I pray the LA citizens have evacuated and the storm damage is not as severe as they predict.

Remember the Republican preacher that prayed for lightning and storms to ruin the Acceptance speech by Obama in Denver? What a beautiful night....OOPS......What happened, are we sure that he didn't whisper to God and say the Republicans stupid....The Republicans....OOPS...John, don't let Gustav rain on your parade.
McCain is going to LA for political reasons only to show that he cares about them. What happened when he was eating cake on the airplane with Bush when Katrina hit...OOPS...John now wants people to think that he cares about them....It is so sickening.

lol...I think God is saying you don't tell me what to do. They absolutely amaze me, I guess they think God is a republican working for them.

It is interesting that many in the right supported the internet ad for evangelicals to pray for rain at Invesco Field to disrupt the Democratic Convention. The same John Mccain said nothing about the ad...it was ordinary people that cried outrage and they eventually pulled it down.

As an Independent I find this all so interesting that we are now facing such a destructive storm days after the Evengelical Right wanted rain and storms to disrupt the Democratic convention.

Let's pray for the safety of our citizens and hope our country Never forgets Katrina! Speaking from the disaster zone does nothing to compensate what happened 3 yrs ago!! John Mccain was eating cake as people struggled and died. He and the government stood by and watched a city drown. .......Now we are using this crisis as a political football!

Let us as America Never forget! Never let them forget!

It doesn't matter where McCain is when he gives his speech. By definition that location will be a disaster zone.

Just what they'll need. People getting in the way. Diverting attention from the needs of the people in the disaster area. Just to secure McSame's safety & security. All so he can make a speech. More free media time is more like the truth.

Exactly, millions without power yet his crew will have generators and lights to film his speech. God they have no class.

McCain does not need to be anywhere near the disaster zone. He is a senator. From the most arid state in the union. He doesn't even own a pair of rubber boots. He wil just be in the way PRETENDING that he cares. If he were presidential material he would have said to bush during Katrina, "You know, George, we shouldn't be eating cake and having parties here in Arizona right now, it doesn't look presidential." So last time he wasted the presidents time, now he is going to waste other peoples precious time.

If the Repub couple are on their way to Mississippi then can I suggest that people make the "ripe" tomato crop ready for their arrival?

The monumental hypocrisy parade begins. The Repub talking heads will be spewing syrup and honey for a week.

Where's my barf bag?

So it’s not ok to celebrate during a disaster, but it is ok to use it for political advantage?

I find it hard to credit this report. Imagine going into the middle of a disaster area and siphoning off resources that are desperately needed to support the necessary security, logistics etc to give a speech. McCain cannot be this dim.

Oh yes he can. He did it during the flooding in the spring. Nothing keeps Republicans from photo ops. The locals ASKED him not to come, as it would siphon resources, but he did it anyway.

uh, not this dim ? You did get the word of who he felt best qualified to be his VP when had said that it is a critical judgement decison to pick THE most perfectly able team mate that COULD step in in a "heartbeat" situation to run the country...Yeah, the PTA Mom of five, gun toting , creationalist who belives in the "WORD" and likely embraced by the Evangelica's full force for they too believe HTE END OF ALL TIME IS NIGH and find her "Madonna" like evidently....!!! These folks are still yet geared to RULE problem is , a goodly majority are NOT exactly really falling in line or for their lines now if some will just get over their long held innate racisimaticals and realize just how important to move on and embrace that skin color does NOT determine THE ACTUAL CAPABILITIES and should NOT be held as a number one criteria with anything else found useable to give "cover" to excuses as to why unable to vote Obama for real ...welll, Gutav will prove minor to the blowback should somehow McC and his partner Palin take the WH !!!!

At least it will help with the expectations game..."Well of course McCain's speech stunk compared to Obama's. He had to give it in a driving thunderstorm in a shack!"

Apart from that I don't see how the Repubs can spin this to their benefit. Gustav is going to make the Republicans finally face up not only to the utter disaster of their handling of Katrina but the way they have tried to hide the mess the recovery has become.

TV news does not do retrospectives, but when they send crews down to film the new wreckage even if there is none they will still have to film something, so they will film the three year old wreckage.

Worst case scenario...the levees fail again.

If hurricanes were an act of God, this one would strike only the republican convention.

The hypocritical stuff being posted on jmac's site is nauseating. Some of it should be printed on the front page of LA newspapers so that people are aware about just how fake these Repubs are.

This is the kind of cr@p being posted on jmac's site:

"Posted at 10:02AM on 8/31/08 by jchu

Seize the opp seize gustav palin should leave penn and head to new orlean pronto and establish herself as one who really cares for the people"

In other words use palin to fool everyone that the Repubs really care. This should become a front-page headline.
