Politico:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech by satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

But officials insisted that, the convention, scheduled to open here on Monday, will go on -- albeit in a more limited and sedate form, if Hurricane Gustav stays on its projected path. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday after federal officials said Gustav could grow to a catastrophic Category 5, hitting Monday afternoon between East Texas and western Mississippi.

Breaking news:

The happy couple are on their way to Mississipi - at the invitation of the Gov. To get a briefing on the safety status and review storm prep.

Oh goody.

Missy Gov had a large role in the enterprenural aspects of rebuilding after Katrina struck and destroyed...He has profitted handsomely and so have HIS cronies so not unexpected he would welcome the GOP s synamic duo...GBO, how many fools are going to REALLY, HONESTLY respect the choices and judgements ON DISPLAY regarding all of this ? Late word too, Bush and Cheny will skip the Twind CIty affair out of respect and concern of the GUlf coast folks...LOKE YEAH, RIGHT ON and we so believe that and a heavy sigh of relief for helps the GOP spin why so MANY of their OWN have SKIPPED the convening there ...none anxious to be seen as if they too have totally lost their minds and are in full support of the McCain ticket especially as his judgement is now center staged with his VP selection !!!

I suppose Bush is trying to look engaged and redeem himself as "presidential" since he made a mess of it three years ago. Imagine three years later and takes advantage and tries to make another mpression. Sad part--no one cares because the 1st misstep won't wipe out the 2nd attempt.
That said, I don't understand why McCain needs to show up and give a stupid speech no doubt. It seems there are people in place to handle the PR and don't need his input. So what, McCain parks his bus and jumps on the plane with his new VP and they get in the way. WOW!! She gets to tour the country and give an empty comment about something that is traumatic for all these people once again. How they can take advantage of that trauma is beyone me.

BET YOU DIDN'T KNOW:

In fact, as Palin's cultural views become better known -- she oppose abortion in all cases and opposes the use of birth control pills and condoms even among married couples -- she will undoubtedly scare the hell out of the soccer moms and 98% of Hillary voters.

If Blackwater really is getting sent to the disaster area then I hope that the two mavericks will speak out against disaster capitalism and the waste and corruption of using private contractors with political ties. I'll be waiting for it.

This wold be the most crass, self-serving action he could take. To interrupt the emergency services going on in the area for a photo op?

Rescue helecopters were grounded during shrubs trip to N.O. last time for his photo op. He even had firemen flown in or bussed in, I forget which, to be seen in the background. Truly criminal.

Everyone is being told to get out, yet McCain/Palin are going in as if they are already president and vice president. What business do they have there? Why are the Republican governors inviting them in? Neither is from the region.

And the hits just keep on comming. Mc Cain will be off the serve the Koolaide to people in shelters and get his picture taken with pennyless homeless people in his $ 570.00 Calf Skin Loafers.

Then Mc Cain will use ON STAR to find his nearest House or just buy one so he can shower off the good old American germs from all the handshakes.

Cindy will make a toru of all 10 homnes checking for damage and checking on the maid, butlers, cooks and gardeners in case they escaped their chains.

No one is more relieved than Bush, Cheney, and governors Jindal, Crist, Barbour and Perry. All of them were dreading attending McPOW's bomb of a convention. I'm not saying they're happy about Gustav, but they are damn sure glad that they don't have to fake enthusiasm in Minnesota.

How fitting that we will associate his bid for POTUS with disaster.

How rich it would be if it would draw attention to the numerous oil spills that happened before.

Hopefully while he is grandstanding amid a disaste zone, other cameras would be focused on the places he DIDN'T was us to see.

My friends, opportunity is knocking.

No one can make me believe that JM is a hero. This man acts more like a coward everyday and until he can prove he was a hero, I'll never consider him as such. Everything he does is cowardly.

He can do anything he wants the rest of his life and nobody can criticize him.

Such a deal.

What really nauseates me is that over the next few days we can expect to see and endless parade of monumental hypocrisy.

It will feel like we're on a schiff in the middle of the storm. Please get your buckets ready, in a pinch you can vo mit over the side.

You're right. Every repug is going to be repulsive in their lies. If they are dumb enough to accept a "nobody" for a president, then everyone should do as larazon said, get your "barf bag" out of storage immediately.

Too little too late. The GOP is intrinsically bound with the tragedy of Hurricane Katrina. No schmaltzy amount of pandering will work this time. The Bush administration failed the people of New Orleans and only helped the stricken in Mississippi because their leader, Haley Barbour, is the quintessential, pork sucking GOP governor

I'd like to see the media start playing some loops of the prayers for rain to fall on O's speech and then a panel of clergy debating if this is the answer to their prayers.

I wonder who Hagee will be blaming for Gustav....
