Politico:

President Bush is unlikely to make it to the Republican National Convention and Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) may deliver his acceptance speech by satellite because of the historically huge hurricane threatening New Orleans, top officials said.

But officials insisted that, the convention, scheduled to open here on Monday, will go on -- albeit in a more limited and sedate form, if Hurricane Gustav stays on its projected path. New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin ordered a mandatory evacuation beginning at 8 a.m. Sunday after federal officials said Gustav could grow to a catastrophic Category 5, hitting Monday afternoon between East Texas and western Mississippi.

My friends, as I look out tonight at the devastation and destruction that has so unfairly returned to our American shores, I am strengthened. Yes, people of New Orleans, my fellow Americans, as we share the losses of lives and homes and the dreams of families and small business owners that have been once again swept away by the cruelty of Mother Nature, I feel stronger tonight than I have in many years. Stronger, because I now that change is coming.

My friends, I know that tonight the country is closer to realizing its promise of drilling for oil in our oceans. They said it wouldn't happen, that the resentments and prejudices of the past would deny us the future of offshore drilling. But, my friends, that future is now. Imagine, my friends, looking out into the waters off our coasts, and seeing the drilling platforms of freedom . Imagine seeing the pollution in the air and feeling the pride of knowing that that exhaust is the result of oil drilled by Americans, Americans who can't even find Mexico on a map. (wait for applause)

My friends, we have such a bright future. We must not entrust it to a man who knows William Ayers. We must drill offshore, New Orleans. Thank you, and God bless the United States of America.

I think they're going to have enough to deal with without worrying about him being down there. This serves no purpose other than for attention.

The storm might be his saving grace to get out of the repug convention knowing it was going to be a disaster anyway. JM knows he can only go downward from this point on.

Great! Have the Secret Service shut down an evacuation route so McSame and his entourage can have a political photo opportunity.

This makes no sense at all - does he just want to be where the MSM is? How could this possibly help the Gulf coast? I don't get it.

He doesn't care about the Gulf coast.

This is as cynical a political ploy as his selection of an unqualified running mate was.

He's trying to resuscitate his campaign, which is faltering badly---even with the Rove/Bush team running it.

Maybe he can airlift out some evacuees in Cindy's private jet and let them stay i one of their many homes.

Don't hold your breath.

He'd have to have someone tell him where the homes were.

Besides, he's not that generous or kind-hearted.

Phony theatrics AGAIN !
When KATRINA first struck, McCain was celebrating his birthday with President Bush in Arizona. In the days that followed, he urged Congress to make sacrifices to help the recovery effort. but CAUTIONED AGAINST going overboard and burdening "future generations of Americans" with "the highest deficit, probably, in the history of this country." (Iraq a better way to burden future generations, I guess)

His FIRST visit to the region was MARCH 2006 .....

BUSH FLEW OVER New Orleans 3 days after...

As for Obama?

I keep thinking about Lincoln's words and pray he was right: " You can fool some of the people all of the time and all of the people some of the time, but you can't fool ALL OF THE PEOPLE ALL OF THE TIME."

Pray to whomever/whatever you pray to, people, that he was RIGHT!

I've noticed something very peculiar. The usual right wing tr0lls appear to be conspicuously absent. The situation has gotten completely out of control and headed for a disastrous finish.

Is predicting a landslide too presumptuous of me?
