Palin

As numerous outlets have reported upon McCain's choosing of Sarah Palin to be his running mate, the Alaska governor, who has a reputation for being a reformer in a state fraught with corruption, faces her own state ethics investigation.

The basics, from Bloomberg News:

The Alaska Legislature voted last month to investigate allegations that Palin dismissed the state's public safety commissioner after the official resisted pressure to fire a state trooper involved in a contentious divorce from Palin's sister.

The Legislature has hired a former district attorney to investigate the case and asked him to issue a report by Oct. 31, just before the Nov. 4 general election, state Senator Hollis French said in an interview.

The vote by the Legislative Council to authorize the probe was unanimous, said French, a Democrat from West Anchorage. The council conducts state business when the Legislature isn't in formal session.

Palin fired the public safety commissioner, Walt Monegan, on July 11. Several days later, Monegan said he had been pressured by members of Palin's administration and family to fire state trooper Mike Wooten, according to the Anchorage Daily News.

French said it ``remains to be seen'' whether the investigation embarrasses Palin. The important issue, he said, will be whether evidence emerges that ties Palin directly to efforts to pressure Monegan.

ABC's Blotter blog, which has a well-detailed account of the history of the incidents that led to the investigation, notes that Palin "is likely to be deposed soon in the case, according to State Sen. Hollis French, who leads the state Senate's Legislative Counsel Committee."

Walt Monegan, who was fired by Palin, gave an interview to the Washington Post Friday in which he discussed the background of the case:

Monegan, 57, a respected former chief of the Anchorage Police Department, said in an interview with The Washington Post's James V. Grimaldi on Friday that the governor repeatedly brought up the topic of her ex-brother-in-law, Michael Wooten, after Monegan became the state's commissioner of public safety in December 2006. Palin's husband, Todd, met with Monegan and presented a dossier of information about Wooten, who was going through a bitter custody battle with Palin's sister, Molly. Monegan also said Sarah Palin sent him e-mails on the subject, but Monegan declined to disclose them, saying he planned to give them to a legislative investigator looking into the matter.

Palin initially denied that she or anyone in her administration had ever pressured Monegan to fire the trooper, but this summer acknowledged more than a half a dozen contacts over the matter, including one phone call from a Palin administration official to a state police lieutenant. The call was recorded and was released by Palin's office this month. Todd Palin told a television reporter in Alaska that he did meet with Monegan, but said he was just "informing" Monegan about the issue, not exerting pressure.

"She never directly asked me to fire him," Monegan said.

Seriously, I'm laying odds with people on whether she's going to have to drop off the GOP ticket before the election. Any takers?

There are good odds of that. I've also suggested that because of this disastrous pick the GOP may drop McCain as well. Nothing these people do is by accident or without contrition and if the GOP felt too threatened of losing with their presumptive nominee, they may have pressured McCain to make this pick knowing full well it was a bad choice. It will be very interesting to see the outcome of the convention.

Would not be surprised that within the next two to three weeks she is off the ticket.

Once all the hub-bub wears off and reality sets in for the Repubs and the rest of us.
It will be realized that this is a disastrous decision on McCain's part.
Biden will make her look like the small town Mayor that she is. Not a bad
person necessarily although the ethics charge is troubling, but she is just
so, very, extremely unqualified.

Whether or not she leaves the ticket, I am hoping that God shows some
mercy on us all and does not let this happen.

We will certainly have an answer by October 31--I guess we will have to wait for the report.

Let's also not forget that OIL is THE BIGGEST industry in the state of
Alaska and she is PRO drilling to bring money to her state. She does
not believe the science behind global warming or that Polar Bears
are in the least bit of trouble. She sued the federal government saying
so and lost.

Yes that's the "Change We Can Believe In" Woo-Hoo another far
right, Oil obsessed, global warming denier. Will all just plod along
a few more years and then when there is no longer a middle class
(kinda like Mexico) we can all start sneaking into Canada for work.

Alaska is more corrupt than Washington, DC (and that is really saying something!). Isn't this hauntingly familiar to the US Prosecutors investigation going on in Congress? Using personal/political reasons to fire/deny employment?

This kind of behaviour happens usually in the most corrupt societies in the world...just ask Mugabe or Putin. How many steps away are we from imprisioning those who disagree with the administration? These things happen gradually...and each little step sounds reasonable or unimportant...until it explodes in your face.

Do you really want this to continue? REALLY?

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 02:50 PM on 08/30/2008

And does your kind of change include corruption, falsification of documents and being a quitter when she does not get her way? Where are her qualifications? Where is she on foreign affairs? What is her stance on education? Where is she on the national economy?

You see, she has to be able to take the reigns of this nation if McCain so much has goes into surgery and has to be put under for any reason. She needs to be able to handle anything at a moments notice even if McCain is incapacitated for even one hour. Running a state of 670,000 people for less time than the candidates have been campaigning is not going to cut it.

No, McCain picked one of the same old guard. SHe's being investigated for misuse of her office and on ethics issues, different cases. SHe's shown herself to be vindictive and to use her clout to have her private aims furthered. She also has her husband involved with her staff (pushing them around) and in the day-to-day routine of the governor's office, though he is not emplyed by the state.

She is a corrupt politican given to cronyism and nepotism. The perfect pick for the GOP. All she's missing is an affair or two.

I tend to think that the McCain camp has had a pass through the month of August, and that the Obama camp, while publicly stating that they wanted to take "the high road" have been looking for some targets to shoot at. In choosing Palin, McCain might have given them a pretty big bulls-eye to aim at. The Alaska ethics investigation is not going to complete until after the election, and that is Palin's problem; the Democrats can blast away at her, and she really cannot put the issue to rest until after November 04, 2008. I am really looking forward to this: Republicans play smear politics better than do the Democrats, but the Chicago Democrats are the biggest thugs in politics. If they really do decide to bring out the brass knuckles, will Palin be up for it?

This "scandal" is a gift to the Republicans. It may well have been that she crossed the line in getting involved in this matter.

HOWEVER, the guy she was trying to get fired tasered an 11-year-old boy, her nephew no less, and talked about it to the investigator, saying that it was no big deal. Then there's the tiny matter of him threatening the life of Palin's father if he helped Palin's sister obtain a divorce attorney.

Walt Monegan, the "respected" civil servant that he was, gave the guy a 12-day suspension, reduced further to 5 days. I mean, what does it take to get fired under Monegan's watch?!

Maybe Palin was overzealous in trying to get Monegan to sack her brother-in-law. But wouldn't you be too? Seriously, do the Democrats want to be the party of 5-day suspensions for tasering children?

Don't drive off this cliff.

you press charges. you take the guy to court.

you don't coerce other people to do your bidding because then that is called "an abuse of power."

That's why it is called an ETHICS investigation.

She did go through the process. The investigation found the guy guilty of 4 (of 13) charges:

1) Tasering the 11-year-old. In Wooten's own words: "So we went in our living room and I had him get down on his knees so he wouldn't fall. And I taped the probes to him and turned the Taser on for like a second, turned it off. He thought that was the greatest thing in the world, wanted to do it again."

2) Shooting a moose illegally. Ok, this doesn't seem like a big deal.

3) Drinking in a patrol car.

4) Threatening to make his father-in-law "eat a f'ing lead bullet" if he helped his daughter get an attorney for the divorce.

After making these findings, they gave him a 5 day suspension!

BTW, people don't actually "press charges" in the US; district attorneys do. If the system didn't see fit even to fire the guy after concluding he was actually guilty of the above, you expected it to prosecute him?!

I disagree with a lot of Palin's policies, but I refuse to condemn her for this. If a law enforcement officer tasered your nephew and threatened to kill your dad, wouldn't you want to fire the guy who only thought it was worth a 5 (or even 12) day suspension?!

At worst, she should get a minor reprimand (along with a thank you card). Monegan shouldn't be overseeing law enforcement if that's his attitude.

The issue is her possible use of the power of her office to achieve what appears to be a personal vendetta. If that proves to be the case, then she's got no business occupying a position of public trust.

You're saying that Palin's got no business occupying a position of public trust? LOL What about Hillary? Where are the records of those who donated to the Clinton library, huh? What about when the Clintons left the White House with over $200,000 of artwork and other assorted items paid for by tax payer's monies? What about Slick Willy letting Bin Laden slip through his fingers THREE times? Maybe he was too busy getting serviced in the Oval Office. You think? This is why Obama could not put Hill on the ticket. Too much filthy, dirty laundry!

The abuse of power is secondary to the insight into her philosophy and beliefs - she does NOT believe in the rule of law.

THAT alone disqualifies her for ANY position in the Federal Govt, State Govt, Local Gvt, even effing dog catcher.

But Sarah Palin's role was simple retaliation, not protection of anyone. And the issue of the taser attack only came up in a messy divorce setting - if Sarah's sister was aware of this kind of thing, why didn't she call the police and get a restraining order on this jerk? The point is, nothing that Sarah Palin (allegedly) did was for protection, it was only for retaliation.

The bigger point is - If Sarah Palin used such poor judgement in this issue, and her "solution" neither had the ability to actually solve a problem nor was it anything other than simple abuse of power - if Sarah Palin can't be Governor of Alaska for 20 months without making that big of a blunder, we are supposed to feel comfortable turning over the entire United States of America to her? It's not just the scandal itself that has me worried, it's her inability to handle even a simple problem without making it into an even bigger problem.

I really do not care about Sarah Palin. My concern is John McCain's judgment in picking her. It is obvious it was a hail mary pass. All he wants to do is win.

As far as Sarah Palin goes, we should not be talking about her. She did nothing but accept. It is John McCain that should be the SOB.

I think more than anything, this really is a good indication of McCain's judgement. In the most important decison of his campaign he chooses a person with very little experience and on top of that, she is under investigation which if she is found to have had a role in this, it will blow up his campaign which begs anyone with 10 brain cells to ask why would you choose a person who is under investigation when there are so many other qualified people you could have chose

For those making the case that Tim Kaine was up for VP for the Democrats and he too has only 2 years under his belt as governor, lets remember that the US Census Bureau, whose numbers track to 2006, had the following:

Alaska: pop. 670,053
Virginia: pop. 7,642,884

And for good measure the US Census has the US pop. at 299,398,484 (so if McCain were to drop...)

YOU DO THE MATH!

As a Virginian and as a Tim Kaine supporter I knew he wasn't a contender for VP.
He, as one of the first Obama supporters, had a job to do and he did it perfectly.
As a popular Gov. from a battleground state his name got the VA. ground game up and running.
I think his end goal is Sec. of Ed.
That being said ,He is still a waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better pick for VP than she is.
