Politico:

The selection of a running mate is among the most consequential, most defining decisions a presidential nominee can make. John McCain's pick of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin says a lot about his decison-making -- and some of it is downright breathtaking.

We knew McCain is a politician who relishes improvisation, and likes to go with his gut. But it is remarkable that someone who has repeatedly emphasized experience in this campaign named an inexperienced governor he barely knew to be his No. 2. Whatever you think of the pick, here are six things it tells us about McCain:

Mostly it says he's a HYPOCRITE.

I don't get the McCain is still McCain revelation. He hasn't been marching to his own beat for years and if he was he would have the wiggle room the article professes that he doesn't to pick a different running mate. He's just doing what he's told and swinging for the fences.

Let's see, the gas tax holiday didn't work. The press conference in the grocery store cheese isle was a disaster. Hmmmm, what will work? What gimmick will the American people be s,tupid enough to buy? Flagging Burn Ban? Not timely enough. G,ay Marriage? No, that's been done. G,uns? Maybe. But how about a woman who loves guns? Even better. Add into the mix a hockey Mom? Yep, that's the ticket. That's the gimmick that the American people might actually buy! Yippee!

McDrill's choice of veep is so many different things that say so many bad things about his character, that we are running out of adjectives, if we haven't already run out. He has done a selfish, irresponsible, ruthless and dangerous thing.

As for Marge, if she is as bright as some say she is, she'd know straight away that she is being used big time. He is p*mping her out to the nation. Naturally she wasn't going to turn it down, but she will never be able to pride herself on being deserving; she, above anyone, will know that she isn't. And she will have that awful taste in her mouth of getting a job not on merit but on nothing more than fitting a particular profile. Hired to save someone else's skin. If she has any integrity, getting veep in that way should just about kill her, metaphorically speaking. Any woman with any sense of pride would feel degraded.

The whole thing is so ugly...and so dangerous to the country. He has shown in one swift move that it is he, not O, that is not ready to be president.

Shouldn't SHE already know what such an investigation would reveal. Not the brightest bulb on the tree.

What a mockery McCainBush and the Religious Right have made of the Republican Party. True conservatives must be outraged.

To date, Bob Barr is on the ballot on 48 or the 50 states.

To true conservatives, I say: there's you're alternative.

With Bob Barr and Wayne Root as a ticket with two white guys, and this country as racist and sexist as it is, Barr might actually achieve 15% in polling and be included in the debates.

Good times....

given McCain's age, I can't vote for a vice president who has spent less time in office than I've been in college. I can't vote for a vice president who has zero foreign policy experience or even interest. McCain is in the last years of his life and I don't trust this soccer mom with my kid's future.

THE REPUBLICANS THINK THEY CAN SET A TRAP FOR DEMOCRATS BY ARGUING PALIN IS MORE QUALIFIED THE OBAMA. WHILE OBAMA HAS BEEN ELECTED BY 18 MILLION PEOPLE HE IS THE DEMOCRATIC NOMINEE THE RESULT OF OUR DEMOCRATIC PROCESS. THE DEMOCRATIC PROCESS HAS SPOKEN. NO ONE ELECTED SARAH PALIN; SHE HAS NOT RUN FOR NATIONAL OFFICE. THE ISSUE ABOUT PALIN IS MCCAIN'S JUDGMENT AND TEMPERAMENT TO BE PRESIDENT. JUDGING BY HIS DECISION TO PICK PALIN HE DOES NOT HAVE THE JUDGMENT AND TEMPERAMENT TO BE PRESIDENT AND HE IS PANDERING TO THE RIGHT WHILE SKIPPING OVER MORE QUALIFIED PEOPLE LIKE TOM RIDGE, OR MITT ROMNEY AND OTHERS. DON'T FORGET THE ISSUE IS MCCAIN'S TEMPERAMENT AND JUDGEMENT.

Palin can bring upon us a disaster a great magnitude due to her lack of judgement and political experience. This is not about sexism or family values. This is MY country and that of my children and it is unacceptable that someone be so close to become president on the political views of a paranoid demagogue like McCain. The result sis that we are descending in political surrealism and stupidity.

Do you realize how dumb that argument is? The reason why Obama won around 18 million votes is because he was a Democratic party candidate for the office of President. Sarah Palin did not proceed with a candidate run for the Republican presidential nominee in the same election, you sack! She is the Vice Presidential pick.

I guess we could use your logic and say Joe Biden is not qualified because he failed miserably in the same run as Obama, correct?

YOU ARE SAYING PALIN IS MORE QUALIFIED THEN MITT ROMNEY OR TOM RIDGE. OK?? EITHER ONE OF THOSE IS MORE QUALIFIED AND WOULD BRING PA, OHIO AND MICHIGAN INTO PLAY ALONG WITH NEV AND NEW MEXICO. HE MADE A RISKY PICK AND HE SHOULD PUT COUNTRY FIRST. MCCAIN DOES NOT HAVE THE TEMPERAMENT AND JUDGMENT TO BE PRESIDENT. PANDERING TO THE RIGHT IS NOT PUTTING COUNTRY FIRST.

If the thought of Sarah Palin taking over the office of the most powerful position in the world does not scare you, then you are lying.

who's taking care of Palin's 4 month old baby?

what kind of mother abandons her baby to run for vice president?

in my opinion, women should stay home with their children for at least the first year, if not 6 months!

would Palin

Precisely. What does it say about McCain to even consider asking her to run. His logic: I had nannies, everybody has nannies. Just put the kid in the bassinet and call the agency.

So, its ok for a mother to have a career unless she wants to run for a government office? My guess is her loving husband and family all help take care of the baby.

Favorite    Flag as abusive Posted 07:54 PM on 08/30/2008

Good answer. Would you do it? Would you leave a developmentally challenged infant and hit the campaign trail? I have trouble leaving my 14 year old too long after school. I wanted to be with my babies and they were healthy. It's not a knock against her, just asking if that is what you would do?

That's not fair at all. How she takes care of her kids is her and her husband's business and unless there's specific evidence that her kid is suffering some type of neglect, it's probably a good idea for all of us to stay out of that part of her life.

I was lucky enough to have a stay-at-home mom when I was growing up, while several of my friends' moms worked. Looking at where we all are now, there's nothing that seems to be any different in how we all turned out or in how successful or well-adjusted we all are. Each person has to do what works for them and their families and, short of seeing abuse manifested, we'd all do a little better not passing judgment on others' personal lives.

I don't care who is taking care of her baby, but what I do care about is who is fit to take fix this country after the REPUBLICANS have run it into the ground during the last eight years, and it's not her or mccain, no way, no how. In addition it seems both her and mccain are ethically challenged re: keating five and the brother in law firing. More of the same. It must be so difficult and embarrassing to be a conservative or republican or religious right person or whatever these days.

It is relevant. Her four month old child has Down Syndrome; meaning that the child does and will have special needs throughout their life.
The anti-abortionists do not care about the children once they are born. They only care about the period of time between conception and birth.
The ONLY reason they care about that timeframe is because they want control of a woman's body; they could care less about the kids.
If they cared so much about life, all those anti-abortion people should adopt every child currently living in orphanages; they should be against unnecessary wars in Iraq that has caused needless deaths, and they should be opposed to the death penalty.
The fact that Palin chose to run for VP instead of taking care of her special needs child is typical of the right wing hypocrisy on this issue. She is just as big a fraud as McCain.

I would wonder why this anti-abortion candidate would have jeopardized her unborn baby's life flying back to Alaska from Texas after she noticed she was leaking amniotic fluid. I question the judgment of a mother of 4 who has been pregnant before not to get to a hospital close by to be evaluated-very very weird.

I wonder if, at some unconscious level, McCain doesn't really want to win this election. He's going through all the motions, but his heart just doesn't seem into it. The weird smiles that punctuate his lackluster speeches, the new antagonism toward the press, the adoption of Rovian tactics, his choice of Palin as a running mate - are these the actions of someone determined to win, or of someone who believes that he doesn't really deserve to win?

I have thought ever since I started paying attention to him that he feels very guilty about something(s) and is desperately defensive, lying and distorting to make a hero facade to hide what he perceives to be deep transgressions. Undermining his success may be an act of goodness, in that he knows he is not really up to the task, and that he cannot maintain the facade under to scrutiny he would get as president. Maybe he will put the country first and lose the election.
