Alaska National Guard General: Palin Plays No Role In National Defense Activities Even When They Involve The Alaska National Guard

ST. PAUL, Minn. — Wait, now, say the Republicans. You think that Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin lacks experience? You think that at 44, with less than two years running the nation's northernmost state, she doesn't have what it takes yet to be a heartbeat away from the presidency?

Pshaw.

What about the fact that she stood up to embattled Alaska Sen. Ted Stevens? What about her oversight of her state's National Guard contingent? Her experience as a mother? And, hey _ what about the fact that she runs a state that happens to be very close to Russia?

Each of these characteristics has been cited by a Republican since Friday as an ingredient in John McCain's conclusion that Palin is qualified to become vice president of the United States.

"She has experience not only in politics but in life," former Republican Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee said Sunday on CNN.

None of this suggests that Sarah Palin is not a skilled, competent, multitalented public servant. But it means that, in the face of fierce Democratic assertions that she is too green to be elevated to vice president, the GOP is looking for whatever it can to show that's not the case and to bolster her credentials, particularly in national security.

And in some cases, the responses from Republicans who showed up on the Sunday morning talk-show circuit to promote Palin's qualifications are unexpected, to say the least.

Thompson: "She's a mother of five children. ... And she has more experience than Barack Obama."

Story continues below
advertisement

Sen. Lindsay Graham of South Carolina: "Governor Palin took on Ted Stevens. If she can take him on, she can take on the Russians." Stevens, a Republican senator, is facing corruption charges and running for re-election.

Minnesota Gov. Tim Pawlenty: "Palin is commander-in-chief of the Alaskan National Guard." The state's Guard has about 4,000 members.

From McCain's wife, Cindy, came a geographic assessment of qualification: "Alaska is the closest part of our continent to Russia. So, it's not as if she doesn't understand what's at stake here."

What these traits say about Palin's ability to serve as vice president or, in an emergency, as president is not entirely clear. But the flurry of comments by leading Republicans hint at a flood-the-zone strategy when it comes to Palin, whose gender, Christian faith and conservative chops infused a lively crackle into John McCain's campaign during the weekend between the two national conventions.

The GOP has also implied that Democratic reactions to Palin's selection are sexist, particularly since, they contend, her time as Alaska's governor gives her the edge over Barack Obama in executive experience. Obama, 47, has spent almost 12 years in office, all of it as a lawmaker _ eight years as an Illinois state senator and nearly four as a U.S. senator. Palin's total is 12 _ she spent 10 as a city council member and mayor, and nearly two as governor.

"If they want to go down that route, in all candor, she has far more experience than Senator Obama does," McCain said Sunday in St. Louis.

Democrats insist sexism isn't at play. "It's not the woman issue at all," former Democratic Sen. Tom Daschle of South Dakota said Sunday on CNN. "There are a lot of other Republican women who could have filled this role if that is what he was looking for" _ such as Texas Sen. Kay Bailey Hutchison or Connecticut Gov. M. Jodi Rell.

Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, appearing on CBS' "Face the Nation," saw a kindred spirit in Palin's experience as mayor, despite the fact that her town, Wasilla, has about 7,000 people and his had nearly 8 million when 9/11 happened.

"Maybe it's my own background as a mayor and United States attorney, but this whole idea of executive experience to me would really qualify her," Giuliani said. He dismissed questions about the size of the town she ran. "You know why? She had to make decisions. All Sen. Obama has had to do is talk. That's all he does."

Some of the comments seemed a bit non-sequitur. Russia, for example.

Maj. Gen. Craig Campbell, adjutant general of the Alaska National Guard, considers Palin "extremely responsive and smart" and says she is in charge when it comes to in-state services, such as emergencies and natural disasters where the National Guard is the first responder.

But, in an interview with The Associated Press on Sunday, he said he and Palin play no role in national defense activities, even when they involve the Alaska National Guard. The entire operation is under federal control, and the governor is not briefed on situations.

Stephen C. Donehoo, managing director of Kissinger McLarty Associates in Washington, and former military intelligence officer specializing in Latin America:

"No doubt the campaign staff have her hooked up to a fire hose on foreign policy issues," said Stephen C. Donehoo, managing director of Kissinger McLarty Associates in Washington and a former military intelligence officer.

"No doubt they fear a debate with Joe Biden that touches foreign affairs," Donehoo said. "My guess is Graham and (Joe) Lieberman are doing a lot of tutoring."

Republican Sen. Norm Coleman of Minnesota appears to have no such worries, given what he considers to be Obama's lack of experience.

"The president sets the tone," Coleman said. "The experience issue is on the other side. The No. 1 guy there is the guy without the experience."

Well, give the corrupt white guy party credit for trying.

But not too much.

The effort is notable; the lack of substance is hysterical.

Being a good mother or a father is not the experience one needs to be VP, especially when you are not really sure what the job entails, Palin is way out of her league. Your resume should include national and international knowledge and real experience in the affairs of the world, not just how to hunt and fish in Alaska. A soccer mom, a PTA mom, little league coach a mayor of a very small town just doesn't cut it.. It is amazing to me that she would even accept the nomination with such a thin resume and experience as she has, she must have a rather inflated ego.

You mean like Obama who has zero executive experience, zero national security experience and zero real international experience. Yet you would vote him to be President? Talk about thin resumes. Being a state legislature does not compare to being mayor or governor. Being a senator that never shows up for votes because he is too busy running for president doesn't cut it.

McCain missed a lot of votes this year, especially the GI bill one which Obama AND Clinton came back specifically for (Country First, right?) Also Barack having 3+ years of U.S. senate, 10+ years of State Legislature experience in ILLINOIS (Population 12 Million + and containing a large major U.S. city in Chicago) vs any experience in ALASKA (population 650,000 + and disconnected from the mainland U.S. with no major cities) doesn't hold water making the argument that Palin is more qualified, at the least this comparison is a wash. Also, even with Barack's short term as a U.S. Sentator, he has far more access to foreign policy information that Palin has ever had in her life, and he is always in that loop as supposed to ANY state govenor.Someone of Barack Obama's intelligence and acumen could manage Alaska's budget blindfolded.

Expierance is in the eyes of the beholder. How many people did you say live in Alaska? How many people live in the town where Palin was mayor? Study the perspective.

Do you think Palin could organise and implement a campaign involving hundreds of employees and hundreds of millions of dollars?

Can you tell me how many people voted for Obama versus Clinton?

Can you please tell me how many times Obama never showed up compared to how many times he did show up?

Can you tell me how many times McCain never showed up compared to how many times he did show up?

What about writing the Nuclear Proliferation law with Lugar (which passed)? They traveled together to Russia while writing it. But then her foreign relations experience trumps his because she has spent more time in Russia simply by being the closest state to it. Do you people really believe this $hit? It would be comical if the consequences weren't so serious.

Don't forget the purpose of Palins propagating the spieces is to send them off to war any war.

Not to worry, McCain-Palin will only attack oil rich countries because she is an expert about oil. McCain is an expert about war, well expert at being a prisonar of war anyway.

A warmongers delightful duo. Don't abort, send to war. Bomb, bomb, bomb, Iran.

Anyone who thinks she has experience for the job is extremely deranged.
As VP she would be a disaster.
Think about what someone in the position needs, certainly much more than she is cabable of bringing. Think about what is good for America and put away your party politics!.

Lack of experience is the factor that keeps me out of the 0-camp. It matters, and no matter how much you are tutored to be brought up to debate level, you are alone at 3am. On the other hand, SP would probably do OK at funerals and other ceremonial roles.....she has a good presence and charm, and as former beauty queen, she would be able to charm the usual male opposition.

ENOUGH ALREADY! YOU ARE NOT ALONE AT 3AM DAMNIT! In a crisis, by the time the President is roused out of her/his slumber, as they're putting the slippers on, the Cheif of Staff is informing them the complete cabinet staff is in the situation room, briefing papers have been prepared on the situuation, each critical area is prepared to discuss the impact their area of responsibility has on the crisis, and yes, the coffee has already been made and poured in the POTUS's cup. Obama is a really intelligent/smart man, who has read and studied the Constitution, has lead debate over finite aspects of Constitutional interpretations, was an efective state and US Senator, and HAS NOT BEEN INDICTED nor is he under investigation by any jurisdiction. STOP trying to compare Palin to Obama as if their bio's are even remotely equivalent. This is a Repiblican canard. At least tell me Palin read Hunt for Red October; not Cindy McCain's god-awful, borderline retarded assertion that Alaska's proximity to Russia is qualifications. Jesus, please return and help us, please!

A heartbeat away from the presidency. They don't say that for nothing, especially with the oldest nominee EVER. The VP isn't 1st lady. Get a clue.

McCain couldn't pick a woman who might have been a safe president-in- the- wings. Such a woman would outshine him. The man is a stone mysoginist.

McCain expects to siphon off Hillary's supporters with Political Barbie?? How insulting.

Hillary supporters won't vote for Palin. She wants no exceptions to abortion, including rape and incest. And no Roe V Wade. Men will not be thrilled with her , either. Palin is now under investigation -- allegedfly for using her office to have her brother-in-law fired from his job because he is involved in a custody suit with her sister. ****If he has no job and is blacklisted by the lady gov, it's pretty near impossible for him to get custody of his kids.**** Political Barbie -- Innocent until proved guilty or smoke enough to investigate equals arsonfire?

Her willingness to destroy our planet for oil companies'profits might also weigh in on some loud guffaws as well.

We all know about Trophy Wives. Now we have a Trophy -- unvetted -- failed beauty queen for our VP candidate. Great judgement, McCain.

One military vet who asks the big question: Where are all the other Hanoi HIlton POWs who adore McCain hiding? Surely they want to speak out for the only POW in America.

How many times are you going to post this same inflated 0bama resume.......?
If you add up all the years you post here: 11yrs Illinois state legislature+9 yrs civil rights lawyer+12 yrs teaching constitutional law+2 yrs community organizer+4years US Senate (actually 1 1/2 prior to campaign for P0TUS)+4 years undergraduate degree at NYU+ 3years Harvard Law School=45 years. So we know he is intelligent, but this doesn't add up to reality, for example:

"In the US Senate Obama has written 890 pieces of legislation, and co-sponsored 1096 pieces of legislation."

He was in the US Senate about 2 years before he started campaigning non-stop for POTUS. I can only find one piece of legislation he wrote and passed; that being "foreign aid to the democratic Sudan", and not to short change his accomplishments, he named a few post offices. As for cosponsoring legislation, all you have to do is say "I want to add my name to the list of co-sponsors.

Looking at the committees you say he was on, well that is very impressive that he got on all of those choice committees as a Jr. Senator, but when was he there to participate? He chaired the subcommittee on Europe including NATO which is involved in Afghanistan and never held a meeting...saying because "I was given that chairmanship "after I started running for POTUS. One would think he would decline the appointment if he couldn't take the responsibility.

This the biggest gaffe by McCain to date what this man needed is someone on his ticket to help him with the economy. I don't think the soccer mom is going to be a lot of help. It is my contention that the GOP is going to have to do one hell of a sales job to get McCain and Palin to give the average American a lot of comfort about their handling of the Economy. What really is the thing most voter feel is Bush would not worry about what was good for the country he would just try to shove it down there throats.McCain is cut from the same cloth.

It's mind boggling that we the people of true patriotic Republicans and Democrats would be taken as idiots for eight more years and lead to believe that another duo of incompetents like John McCain and Sarah Palin could run this country is to but it mildly insanity. How can anyone that is a true patriot and truly believes in the consequence of eternal damnation and love of their country, elect two people who are willing too sell their soul to the Devil for the fortunes of corporate greed. And the sooner Americans with 1/2 a brain wake up and see what this is all about (HIM) not the American people and what they are suffering through. He has a clean bill of health at this time. For POTUS, it is still McCain v. 0bama, and even with Biden on the ticket, 0 is the one who is going to be president, if elected, and the one who will be answering that phone at 3am. You have all the major D. foreign policy advisers, most of whom were in the Clinton administration, but at 3am you are sleeping with M0.........a split second decision is in your hands. She didn't show up very much as governor according to a Juneau newspape and she had difficulty keeping personnel.

Palin has spent little time in Juneau, rarely coming to the state capital except when the Legislature was in session, and sometimes not even then.

During a recent special session called by Palin herself, she faced criticism from several legislators for not showing up personally to push for her agenda.

Someone at the Capitol even printed up buttons asking "Where's Sarah?"

Rep. Andrea Doll, D-Juneau, called it a telling question.

"At a time when her leadership was truly needed, we didn't know where she was," Doll said.

Palin's gubernatorial office has been plagued by turnover. She just appointed a new chief of staff this week, she's on her third legislative director in 21 months, and her press office has had numerous staff coming and going. r
