Graham: McCain Picked Palin To Help "Tell A Story"
This morning on ABC, Sen. Lindsay Graham gave what might be considered a too-truthful explanation for why John McCain chose Sarah Palin as his running mate.
George Stephanopoulos first played a clip of Graham in May stating that McCain's VP pick would be someone who could "lead if something happens to him." Stephanopoulos then asked if that was the criterion McCain used for picking Palin.
Graham's response: "He was looking to a partner that tells a story about what he wants to do in Washington. The idea of Washington being broken is accepted by most Americans. Congress is at 12 percent approval rating. Who are the 12 percent and what do they like? john has a reputation of being a guy pushing the institution called Congress, and Senator -- excuse me, Governor Palin, what she's done in Alaska is what we would hope to do in Washington. That's why he picked her."
So McCain chose Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency because she helps "tell a story"? That borders on a rather crass admission that Palin was chosen more for a narrative that she might drive rather than the skill or accomplishments she brought to the table.
