The McCain campaign has gone to great lengths to present the selection of Sarah Palin as one made after a careful, meticulous vetting process. But evidence continues to suggest that the Arizona Republican made his VP choice with surprising haste.

On Saturday, a Democrat tasked with opposition research contacted the Huffington Post with this piece of information: as of this weekend, the McCain campaign had not gone through old newspaper articles from the Valley Frontiersman, Palin's hometown newspaper.

How does he know? The paper's (massive) archives are not online. And when he went to research past content, he was told he was the first to inquire.

"No one else had requested access before," said the source. "It's unbelievable. We were the only people to do that, which means the McCain camp didn't."

The Frontiersman did not immediately confirm the revelation. And there is no indication from the Democratic source that anything nefarious or problematic will be found in the archives. But officials with the paper did not recall inquiries by the McCain campaign.

"I cannot confirm that information at this time," said publisher Kari Sleight. "I am not aware of the McCain campaign researching our archives, but archive requests do not usually go through me."

If true, the failure of the Arizona Republican to access the newspaper clippings becomes another in a growing list of revelations that calls into question just how and why he made his decision to choose Palin. A rudimentary clip search, such as this, is presidential politics 101 as campaigns not only look for the majority of background information on any high-level appointee, but also try to prepare themselves from future attacks.

It has been previously reported that the McCain campaign did not contact Public Safety Commissioner Walt Monegan, who Palin pushed to have fired after he refused to remove her sister's former husband from the state's police force. That controversy, an investigation of which will be made public in late October, could cause major headaches for Palin in the days leading up to the election.

Story continues below

In addition, the former Republican House Speaker of Alaska, Gail Phillips, admitted to reporters that she was shocked by McCain's choice of Palin, as "his advance team didn't come to Alaska to check her out."

Even McCain's own aides seemed unprepared by the choice. After Palin's name was announced, spokeswoman Nancy Pfotenhauer was asked about the governor's relationship with the Senator.

"You're running flat into the wall of my ignorance here," she said. "I truly have no indication whatsoever the extent of a relationship that exists with the Governor of Alaska."

In light of these reports, the McCain camp has sought to dispel the notion that Palin was un-vetted or chosen out of purely political motives. Even though the presumptive Republican nominee met his now-running mate only once before choosing her, aides have begun arguing, the two are "kindred spirits" and have shared ideological bearings. In a Washington Post piece Sunday, Rick Davis, McCain's campaign manager, said the Palin chose was not a last minute call. The process, he added, was rigorous and involved sifting through financial and other personal data, as well as an FBI background check.

"Nobody was vetted less or more than anyone in the final stages, and John had access to all that information and made the decision," Davis said. "It's really not much more complicated than that."

UPDATE: Some readers have noted that the Frontiersman website includes a small archive of stories about Palin. However, as our original source informed us, and a second Democratic researcher with access to the same records confirms, there have been hundreds of stories on Palin by the Frontiersman dating back over 15 years, only a handful of which are posted online. More important to the story, the Democratic researchers, not the McCain campaign, were the first to request access to these archives.

LATE UPDATE: More evidence is emerging suggest a less-than-thorough vetting of Palin. Marc Ambinder reported on Monday that, contrary to prior claim, the McCain campaign did not conduct an FBI background check on the governor. Such a check would be against bureau policy. And as NBC's Andrea Mitchell reported, that Republican lawyers are just now (i.e. currently) doing a vet of Palin up in Alaska.

LATE LATE UPDATE: As a few commenters have noted, an incomplete archive of Frontiersman stories mentioning Palin is available on the web here. This database includes more than the "handful" of articles we mentioned above, and while we regret not posting a link to it earlier, it is far from comprehensive. Palin was elected to the Wasilla city council in 1992, and was mayor from 1996-2002. Yet the Frontiersman's web archive includes zero stories mentioning Palin from 1992-1997, just one article from 1998, three articles from 1999, six articles from 2000, and 13 from 2001. By 2002, the number of stories available online jumps to 51. The facts of our original story remain the same: despite presenting the selection of Sarah Palin "as one made after a careful, meticulous vetting process," the McCain campaign did not go through "old newspaper articles from the Valley Frontiersman," because "the paper's (massive) archives are not online." But it would have been more precise to say "not fully online." Moreover, as we reported, a reliable Democratic source claims to have been told he was the first to access the complete archives; neither the Frontiersman staff nor the McCain campaign have challenged this point.

The McCain campaign has gone to great lengths to present the selection of Sarah Palin as one made after a careful, meticulous vetting process. But evidence continues to suggest that the Arizona Republ...

Funny, I just searched the archives and found 500 articles since 1998 on Palin.

Mach, I'm sure that the newspaper, being in Palin's pocket and all since she controls everything in Alaska, quickly scanned and posted all of these articles overnight just to make Sam look bad...

Sarah Palin is the political equivalent of the sports fan whose favorite team is the one who just claimed the title. She is incapable of understanding the plight of a Cubs fan because she's too busy buying Red Sox merchandise. Nobody will take Sarah seriously until she reaches into her closet and pulls out that Cubs jersey...

Still no correction of this fabrication? I search their site archives and see 500 articles, and I'm assuming that they've implemented a search limitation that limits me to that number, as others reported getting 977 results.

Kindly click on the following link: http://www.frontiersman.com/shared-content/search/index.php?search=go&o=0&q=palin&d1=09-01-1996&d2=09-07-2008&s=relevance&r=Subject%2CAuthor%2CContent&l=100

I expect I'll see a correction of this post shortly. Why are we resorting to falsehoods and fabrications?

What I seriously don't get at all is that the GOP has been slamming Obama for months for not being experienced enough, when if you look up his qualifications and records proves that, between his acadamia and work, he leaves Palin in the dust. Then, they think we are so stupid that we won't notice that Palin has a journalism degree(!) from some community colleges she floated around at, and the records are not available so we don't even know much about her education. I don't want some inexperienced (by her own admission) person 1 heartbeat away from the presidency.

When she admitted that she doesn't know what the VP does .... and people aren't even worried?

She's no feminist and has proven to be quite the hypocrite. I am still very confused as to why any woman would see this as progress. It's a big fat insult to women everywhere that Palin was offered the VP slot. They would have you believe a woman who elbowed her way into a governorship of a state with only 600,000K population is fit to be president of the U.S.? Just because she's a woman? That's what they want women to buy. I ain't buyin.

Mr. Stein,

You would do well to verify your sources before you publish an article such as this. I'm not contending that McCain did, in fact, research the archived articles of the Valley Frontiersman. However, there are a few more than a "handful" of articles of Governor Palin online. I, myself, just conducted a search of their archived articles for the name "Palin" and came up with 952 results (see http://www.frontiersman.com/shared-content/search/index.php?search=go&o=0&q=palin&d1=01-01-1996&d2=09-032-2008&s=oldest&r=Subject%2CAuthor%2CContent&l=100). Now, it appears as though a number of those results are duplicates. But, even if each article came up twice in the search, that would still net 476 articles - a bit more than a "handful."

She was not vetted properly. That is why McCain is so defensive about it. Just another in a long line of poor judgements.

McCain's selection of Sarah Palin is ridiculously superficial. He underestimates the American female voter by foolishly thinking that the placement of a woman on his ticket will appease the disgruntled Hillary Clinton voters and lure them to vote for the republican woman. Granted, some of them will - those that are as ignorant as the republicans (but they'd vote for him if he put a cow on the ticket with him ). But the majority of these women will see through his poorly contrived charade.

McDumb's opinion of women is nadir. It is apparent that ‘lil Johnny boy has been hanging out with dumb blonds for too long!

Was the McCain's VP pick a blunder or a brilliant one? I am an Obama-smphatizer, and now I am at a loss how Obama must face the celebrity (and oratores, too) phenomenon of Palin the mom.

I think far from being a blunder, McCain's judgment proves to be SHARP and FAR-SIGHTED, more sharp and far-sighted than Obama's .
Who can know beforehand that Palin will boost McCain's polls with only ONE SPEECH in the RNC and being photo-ed and video-ed at McCain's patriotic speech? If you said 2 weeks ago that such miracle will occur you will be called not sane, right?

Obama is good at judging when given enough time, but McCain seems to rely on his (26 years experience!) quick instincts, which proved good, maybe helped by his 26 years being at work.

Yep, THE LIBERAL MEDIA ARE RUNNING SCARED! Just look, they put so much emphasis on senseless issue rather than talking about OBAMA's accomplishments. Why don't they compare OBAMA to McCain. Well,,, that's not comparison at all. McCain has way too much experience. So, they go for SARAH PALIN and Bristol. But the more they expose her, the more I like her. Finally, A WOMAN I CAN RELATE with all hurdles. A STRONG WOMAN from I what I could see.

Obama's accomplishments? Most of what I saw and heard from the media was Rev Wright 24/7, then Ayles, then questioning every move, every word, every blink of Obama's looking for a flaw or problem. The had their foot on Obama's neck for months--the only really posiitve ones were olberman and one other.

go sarah, why dont you do a little online research. Start with the local Alaska newspaper archives on Mrs. Palin. On earmaks, on what the legislature things of her. This is not about birth and babies....this is about our country's safety and security. Do you not believe that each candidate should have their backgrounds checked?

Palin presents the classic resume writing challenge: The ill-qualified individual in search of high position. I hear it often. As a professional resume writer, I usually try to talk my clients back down to earth, but sometimes it isn’t possible.

In Palin’s case, the employer is the U.S. public, and she presents problems that will keep the McCain resume-writing team busy. How do they present her as experienced, when two years ago she was mayor of an Alaskan village of 5,000? How can they cast her as “ready at 3 a.m.” when she has never taken part in a national debate on global issues?

Any HR department would have turned her down, or perhaps sought a different role for her. No doubt this is a resume challenge of the first order.

The solution for Palin is to return to resume accomplishments, without worrying about their scale. If you doubled sales, a reader may be impressed, whether you doubled them at IBM or Adak's Cafe. Palin can explain how she helped constituents. She can break down accomplishments into categories and elaborate. Thus she may be able to show the public a pretty nice resume.

Actually this situation presents Palin with an opportunity, even if she loses. Palin is as qualified to be president as Miley Cyrus is qualified to be Secretary of Defense, but her resume will be stronger by November, win or lose.

Of course Obama was already for some months compared with McCain, didn't you read all the articles about them all these months before the Palin phenomenon came? Almost daily there were articles, in NYT, WaPost, the Hill, etc, I from Indonesia knows it all but you from USA don't know, or don't read it?

They go for Sarah Palin now because she is a new phenomenon, boosting McCains' polls by her beauty and her oratory skills which is as good as Obama's.
As Obama the newcomer last year was scrutinized in all aspects of his life (outside of what's already there in his website) so would a Palin newcomer get the same scrutiny, to ease everybody's curiosity.

You like a strong somebody of the same sex, are you a former Hillary supporter? I am too, but I saw a very different woman in Palin than Hillary, she is coarser than Hillary, not honest as Hillary, she use the paradigm "Goals makes all means (to attain it) legal", she doesn't have the goodness and generosity of heart like Hillary's (will Palin support her rival who defeated her as fiery as Hillary does to Obama?)'

Sarah is an Iron Lady, Laura Bush is a First Lady (who did not punish Michelle Obama for her slip of tongue about proud or not proud of her country for the x time)., and Hillary? (Maybe) is a sort of a Saint.

It’s oblivious that Palin was a great pick just look at how the liberal media is running scared. The only thing they can do is try and dig up every LITTLE thing they can to try and deceive the public with garbage that has nothing to do with her ability to lead. If you want to talk about the vetting process lets talk about Obama has anyone ever challenged him on Ayers, Farrakhan, Wright, or Rezko? The answer is NO the liberal media dares not ask “The One” any questions that might show how he really is.

I’ll put Sarah Palin (our no. 2) up against Barack Hussein Obama (dems no.1) any day. Let’s pull out all the achievements for both candidates and see who has accomplished more. The only thing Obama has experience in is running for office.

How about you go ahead and ask the questions about Barack Obama? What is it that you want to know? Seriously, every time I hear people wonder "who Barack Obama really is" I have to wonder what information they're lacking. The reason I point it out is because I think he's made his background and life story fairly clear. I think the problem is that you want to keep asking the questions over and over until he gives you the answers you want. The answer you want is not forthcoming. When have people not challenged him on Ayers, Farrakhan, Wright or Rezko? Have you been living in a cave? He was questioned about Rezko during several of the many Democratic candidate debates. I'm guessing you didn't watch them. And I'm not even to go into all the scrutiny concerning Rev. Wright. (Where was the scrutiny over John Hagee, that's what I wonder.)

You know what I want to know? What's John McCain's plan for America? I've seen his website, and while his basic positions may be sort of clear his plans aren't. On Barack Obama's website I can see detailed plans for education, energy policy, even internet neutrality. At this point I'm not even sure that John McCain would know what net neutrality is.

So yes, let's go ahead and pull out Sarah Palin's achievements. I'd love to know that she has any.

obird let's see the facts about Mrs. Palin and her "achievements" from the mouths of reporters in Alaska--the MSM has reported NONE of this.

"Most people would acknowledge that, regardless of her charm and good intentions, Palin is not ready for the top job. McCain seems to have put his political interests ahead of the nation’s when he created the possibility that she might fill it... It’s clear that McCain picked Palin for reasons of image, not substance... Gov. Palin, while extending her amazing adventure in politics, must prove she is more than a pawn." newsminer.com • Palin has much to prove

"I said to Walt, 'This can't be happening, because his advance team didn't come to Alaska to check her out," Phillips said. Choice stuns state politicians: Politics | adn.com

"Businessman Mike Elerding, who helped run Palin's local campaign for governor, told the paper he would have a hard time voting for the McCain ticket because of Palin's subsequent neglect of Ketchikan and her flip-flop on the "Ralph Bartholomew Veterans Memorial Bridge." Here, for your information, is a list of Obama's many accomplishments. Courtesy of The Zoo. It's damn impressive. Not only that, but Obama has about 12 years teaching/lecturing Constitutional law. He has an advanced degree: JD, Harvard Law School, 1991
BA, Columbia University, 1983, Attended, Occidental College. He is a licensed Attorney.

Palin? I'm sorry... trying not to laugh. She boasts a degree in journalism which took her 6 or 7 years to get and the records are closed so we don't really know whether or not she even did well. Now, she's being prepped by the big boys as to what a VP does, because by her own admission, she has no clue. And this is who is 1 heart beat away from the presidency should a 72-year-old man die.

Did I mention that Palin is all for aerial gunning of wolves and is a bitter enemy to the environment? Please do you research before you vote.

As addition to Helenwheels list, obama had sponsored or co-sponsored about 12 laws (including the child abuse law here debated), you can see them in www.BarackObama.com

You know, Obama's name is nearly the same as Minister mr Ehud Barak's of Israel, it seems Barack is almost like a Jewish name too

About Ayers, Farrakhan, Rezko, it seems Obama's connections with them is shortlived or not close enough, so it would not make headlines. Dont forget there are anti-Obama media or bloggers who would scrutiny this if there was anything amiss.

About Wright, he was the person who give a deeper teaching of Christian faith to Obama (and baptized him). It seems Obama's mother only give a little religious Christian teaching, but taught more about being socially-minded to the poor etc with her own conducts as an example to him (just like Lady Diana did teach Pricnce Andrew, if somebody will attack this as being socialist)

After Wright's racist and unpatriotic comments Obama severed all ties with him, not only for political reasons, but also Obama SHALL EMBODY THE USA IF HE EVER GET ELECTED AS President of USA, just like Bush now embodied A WARLIKE USA to other countries' people's (see the demo's in Japan, Korea, Italy etx when he came), or an imperialistic USA (for the first time in history)
. So Wright will see OBAMA as an enemy too IF Obama would be President of USA., IF Wright truly hates USA

I am rather confused, why USA President Election proves to be a foul thing, full of bad conducts and impoliteness improper for a head of such a superpower.
Will USA's next President./ VP be a pair of bad behaviorist persons, not knowing how to attain goals with a normal way and politeness if not with honesty, or will they be arrogant and coarse, against rather smaller countries 's leaders (including Russia, China, Australia etc), just like Bush was in his past years of his reign? (Only recently did Bush improve a little, i see, after he learnt of the very bad opiinion of his people about him,)
I hope you Ameicans still remember how you like Bush so much in 2004 you choose him to be president, with all his bad conduct then against McCain and Kerry (see the product of Karl Rove and Schmidt;'s success as top adviser and leader of Bush' 2004 campaign, now used again by McCain))

We Indonesians had made a mistake too in our 2004 election by electing a handsome ex-military candidate, an ex-minister of 2 former presidents, mr SBY, but now regretted it because of the economic chaos and the spread of bankruptness and poverty caused by his miscalculation of what the impacts of his 100% rise of oil prices' will occur to the economy (he belittled it then, not being farsighted enough to calculate the bigness of the impacts of his decisions)

More on Palin from Alaska:

"Her resume is as thin as the meat in a vending machine sandwich. I'm thinking being mayor of Wasilla doesn't qualify her. And she's less than two years into her first term as governor. Except for her high-profile gas pipeline legislation -- which I like a lot -- she doesn't have much to show. Oil taxes? Most of that work was done by the legislature. Ethics? Ditto. And her role in killing the much-touted Bridge to Nowhere? Talk about coming in after the battle is over and bayoneting the wounded... The long and short of it is this: We're not sure she's a competent governor of Alaska. And yet McCain, who is no spring chicken, has decided she's the best choice to replace him as president if he should win and then fall afoul of the Grim Reaper. Sarah Palin? Really? Palin as the president-in-waiting of our nation? Really?": Opinion | adn.com

"During a recent special session called by Palin herself, she faced criticism from several legislators for not showing up personally to push for her agenda. Someone at the Capitol even printed up buttons asking "Where's Sarah?"... Palin's gubernatorial office has been plagued by turnover. She just appointed a new chief of staff this week, she's on her third legislative director in 21 months, and her press office has had numerous staff coming and going. State leaders question Palin's qualifications" - Juneau Empire
