ANCHORAGE, Alaska — Gov. Sarah Palin was for the infamous "Bridge to Nowhere" before she was against it, a change of position the GOP vice presidential running mate ignored Saturday when she bragged about telling Congress "thanks but no thanks" to the pork barrel project.

Federal funds for the $398 million bridge were tacked into an appropriations bill as an earmark, the practice by which members of Congress get special funding for pet projects. Sen. John McCain opposes earmarks as an avenue for pork barrel and special interest spending.

After McCain introduced her as his choice for vice president on the Republican ticket, Palin talked about her reform credentials, and said she stopped the bridge project as part of an effort to end of earmarking in appropriations bills.

The Alaska bridge pushed by Sen. Ted Stevens became a symbol of congressional misuse of tax dollars. It would have connected the town of Ketchikan to an island with 50 residents and an airport on it. Ferries and water taxis serve the island now.

"I have championed reform to end the abuses of earmark spending by Congress," Palin said in her vice presidential campaign debut in Dayton, Ohio. "In fact, I told Congress, I told Congress 'thanks but no thanks' on that Bridge to Nowhere."

"If our state wanted a bridge, I said we'd build it ourselves," she said.

She didn't talk that way when she was running for governor. The Anchorage Daily News quoted her on Oct. 22, 2006, as saying yes, she would continue state funding for the bridge because she wanted swift action on infrastructure projects. "The window is now while our congressional delegation is in a strong position to assist," she said.

McCain has used the Alaska bridge as a case study in what's wrong with the way Congress spends money. After the Ketchikan bridge became an issue and an object of ridicule, Congress dropped the earmark.

Andrew Halcro ran against Palin in the 2006 governor's race, receiving the third most voters, and remains a critic. In his blog and Web site, Halcro raised the bridge issue, saying Palin changed her position for political purposes.

Political flip-flops are a mainstay of presidential politics. One of the most famous examples is John Kerry's explanation for opposing and then favoring an $87 billion Iraq funding bill during the 2004 presidential campaign. "I actually did vote for the $87 billion," he said, "before I voted against it."

According to the Ketchikan Daily News, the bridge issue came up on Sept. 20, 2006, during an appearance the gubernatorial candidates made in Ketchikan.

"The money that's been appropriated for the project, it should remain available for a link, an access process as we continue to evaluate the scope and just how best to just get this done," the newspaper quoted Palin as saying. "This link is a commitment to help Ketchikan expand its access, to help this community prosper."

The newspaper also reported that she said "I think we're going to make a good team as we progress that bridge project."

The bridge issue dates back several years. Former Republican Gov. Frank Murkowski, who had been an Alaska senator, wanted it built. Stevens and Rep. Don Young, pushed the project through Congress, securing $452 million in a federal transportation bill for two bridges _ the one in Ketchikan and another in Anchorage.

With criticism over earmarks increasing, Congress stripped the provision from the bill, requiring instead that some of the money be used for an airport. Alaska eventually received about half the money. Murkowski and the Legislature redirected all of the money but $60 million in 2006, and Palin has left the remainder untouched to eventually be used to improve access to the island, Palin spokeswoman Sharon Leighow said Sunday.

Ketchikan Mayor Bob Weinstein, who campaigned for Palin's Democratic opponent, said he was there at the candidate forum when "she was asked about the bridge and she supported it."

Bill McAllister, Palin's press secretary, questioned how she could have used the scuttled bridge project to promote herself in national politics when she got there a week ago as McCain's unexpected choice for the ticket. "How could she have foreseen that she would be at this point now? Everybody is surprised by this development," McAllister said.

McAllister, who covered the 2006 campaign as a TV reporter, said Palin was lukewarm about the bridge as a candidate and cooled on it as governor.

"Of course when you become governor things come into much sharper focus than when you are a candidate," he said. "Then she is forced to pay very close attention to the fiscal realities of it."

Wow,this just gets goofier and goofier!
Now let me see if I have this straight;John McCain picked some one as a possible, maybe even likely successor to him as military, financial ,foreign policy ,and intellectual(chuckle chuckle)successor to him, who's qualifications are,she has had a baby at the age of 44 who may not be her baby but that of her daughter, the baby is a Down's syndrome baby;her husband's qualifications are,he is part Eskimo and a snow mobile racer.
She was mayor of a little Alakan Town where her reponsbilities were, primarily to cast a deciding vote on deadlocked city councel issues.
She is presently and has been for 1&1/2 years governor of a state who's tax base is primarely Federaly Funded and Big oil supported, and represents herself as a Conservative.
And the American Public is expected to accept her and her running mate as honest upright well informed leaders?
Alice oh Alice please tell me how to get back on the other side of the looking glass!

Despite your atrocious spelling, you got it about right there, "rroy." A couple of things, though.

First, they call it "snow machining" up yonder in Alaska, for reasons I cannot comprehend.

Second, you missed the part about her being a part of or quite sympathetic to the Alaska Independence Party (AIP) , which among other things promotes the idea of Alaska seceding from the union (see a couple of links to the Daily Kos hereabouts - interesting story).

According to that 'site, the founder of the AIP refused to be buried any place under the dominion of the United States. Paging William Ayres! I'll be you can spell "treason," can't you?

If another blogger on Daily Kos is correct, she has fashioned an elaborate lie in claiming that 4 month old baby is hers. If true, she is automatically disqualified to run and should be dropped from the McCain ticket.

You are correct in your assessment of this whole situation -- it is truly Alice and the looking glass!

Westof405

You can include:

Nearly a third of the Alaskan workforce is employed by the government. The oil industry and government are the economy, no major manufacturing, agriculture, or nationwide service providers.

The $1,600 a year stipend each resident, man woman or child, receives from the Permanent Fund for...being a resident.

There are less than 200 homes in foreclosure in the entire state.

Given all this, how can anyone say Palin is prepared to take over if something were to happen to McCain on Jan. 21st?

Alaska is the only state with no state personal income tax or state sales tax. Alaskans get most of their budget from oil royalties , including 16% from Washington. Including other spending such as defense, in FY 2005, Alaska got back $1.84 for every $1 paid in federal income tax-a pretty good return on their money.

Like most GOP hypocrites, Gov. Palin talks about how government is the problem, unless it's when government, i.e. Congress, is putting our tax money into the pockets of her supporters and constituents.
According to today's NYT (Aug. 31) the reason Gov. Palin eventually opposed the "bridge to nowhere" is not because she is against waste or earmarks, as she and McCain would have us believe, but because it turned out that Alaskans would have to pay about half the cost, so she scrubbed the project.
What she fails to say, is that Alaska got the money, but spent it on other things. She may have eventually opposed the bridge, but not because she is against earmarks - she got $8 Million for that little town of hers. She has also made it clear that if elected, she intends to use her position to get Alaska even more federal funds.
Every state, including mine (CA), tries to get as much from Washington as possible, but the least she could do is be honest about it.

No Way Around It Palin Outright Lied

Please note that not only is she doing a 180 on her originally public statements, she also claims she said, borrowing from Bill Clinton no less, No Thank You to the money. No such thing. The money sits in Alaskan state coffers as we speak, and to my knowledge Palin has made no efforts to return the money to Washington DC.

Yea, this is an actual lie. I watched gubernatorial debate (it's in CSPAN's archive--check it out) where the moderator asked her about this. The entire quote is: “You know, I wouldn’t. I am not going to stand in the way of progress. That our congressional delegation in the position of strength that they have right now, they’re making those efforts for the state of Alaska to build up our infrastructure. I would not get in the way of progress of this project or other projects that they are working so hard on. So no, not to cancel a contract in the first 72 hours of my administration that won’t be part of my agenda.” Her opponents said they would try cancel the contract.

Flip-Flopped!! Don't you mean lied about the bridge to nowhere.

In her very first press meeting as the Republican VP candidate she out and out lied about being against the bridge. This needs to be played hard, the soft glove approach is not something that will win this election.

The ad should be some thing like this:
In her very first press meeting as the Republican VP candidate Sarah Palin said this;
(queue to comments)
However 2 years earllier when funding for the bridge was rejected in congress she said this:
(queue to comments)
At best she is trying to mis-lead the country as to her position, which is the same old Bush politics that we have suffered from for the last 8 years.

Kind of hard to admit she wanted the Bridge to Nowhere, that McCain constantly jokes about, as one of the most ridiculous earmarks ever requested.

This is just the first of more to come about Palin that will convince more people that she's not qualified and that McCain cruelly used her to pander to the women vote and the conservation base. Sadly, Sarah doesn't have a clue.

Some Obama Flip-Flops
http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2008/02/24/AR2008022402094.html

1. Special interests.Tthe Obama campaign described union contributions as "special interest" money. Obama changed his tune as he began gathering his own union endorsements. He now refers respectfully to unions as the representatives of "working people" and says he is "thrilled" by their support.

2. Public financing. Obama said he would agree to public financing of the presidential election if McCain did so. He's now attached several conditions to such an agreement, including regulating spending by outside groups.

3. The Cuba embargo. Obama said it was time "to end the embargo with Cuba" because it had "utterly failed in the effort to overthrow Castro." Speaking to a Cuban American audience in Miami in August 2007, he said he would not "take off the embargo" as president because it is "an important inducement for change."

4. Illegal immigration, Decriminalizing Marijuana, Legislation Labeling Iran's Revolutionary Guard Terrorists

5. Running for President or VP of the US, Single-Payer Healthcare, NAFTA

6. Meeting with Foreign Leaders: Obama Now Claims That He Will Only Meet With Foreign Leaders At A Time Of His Choosing If It Will Advance U.S. Interests, But Previously Said He'd Meet With Rogue Leaders His First Year In Office -- Without Preconditions.

To be fair, I have PLENTY of McCain and Bush flip-flops as well..!!!

Senator Obama has a history of projecting a misleading moderation in his politics — and he does it very smoothly. According to his biographer, David Mendell, one of Senator Barack Obama’s greatest political virtues is “his ingenious lack of specificity. . . . While talking or writing about a deeply controversial subject, he considers all points of view before cautiously giving his own often risk-averse assessment, an opinion that often appears so universal that people of various viewpoints would consider it their own.”

Sen Obama loves obscurity, he uses it as a smokescreen even when not necessary. Take for example the issues re Birth Certificate/Registry of Birth squabble. He can defuse it in 10 minutes if he so desired, but chooses confusion over clarity. Maybe he thinks he benefits from this.
