Palin's Abuse Of Power: Worse Than You Think

Talking Points Memo   |   August 31, 2008 12:19 PM

I've noticed some people who should know better claiming that bringing up Gov. Palin's troopergate scandal is tantamount to making a victim of or defending her slimeball ex-brother-in-law who allegedly once used a taser on his stepson.

That's awfully foolish. So I thought I'd put together a post explaining why.

...

We rely on elected officials not to use the power of their office to pursue personal agendas or vendettas. It's called an abuse of power. There is ample evidence that Palin used her power as governor to get her ex-brother-in-law fired. When his boss refused to fire him, she fired him. She first denied Monegan's claims of pressure to fire Wooten and then had to amend her story when evidence proved otherwise. The available evidence now suggests that she 1) tried to have an ex-relative fired from his job for personal reasons, something that was clearly inappropriate, and perhaps illegal, though possibly understandable in human terms, 2) fired a state official for not himself acting inappropriately by firing the relative, 3) lied to the public about what happened and 4) continues to lie about what happened.

The issue with all this is that a poor loser political enemy of Sarah Palin (Halcro) who she beat in the Governor's election put 2+2 together and came up with 5 after Palin demoted her Public Safety Commissioner (Monegan), one of her Cabinet appointees who serves at will and can be replaced at any time by the Governor for any reason. (Monegan quit his job by the way instead of taking a demotion) Well, Halcro surmised on his blog that if Palin replaced Commissioner Monegan, it must have been because of him not firing her ex brother-in-law. Palin says it was because her cabinet member Monegan was uncooperative in hiring more troopers and because of a failure to curb alcohol abuse in the native villages.
Even Commissioner Monegan agrees that Palin NEVER asked him to fire the trooper. But, Obama's point man in Alaska Democrat State Senator Hollis French pushed for an investigation which HE now heads. Using his power in State Government, French hired a former prosecutor colleage of his (and a 30 year friend) to investigate the Governor. Now get this....This investigator French hired (Branchflower) is also a 30 year personal friend of Public Safety Commissioner Monegan and investigator Branchflower's wife used to work Monegan! That's fair?
The whole impetus of this comes down to whether they can read her mind on why she demoted the Commissioner.
This whole thing is ridiculous, but I guess politics isn't about truth and justice.

For those of you who don't really have facts, let me fill you in. I'm sure it won't make a difference to any of you trying to destroy her but at least you should have the true facts. First, here is a story by (the liberal) Anchorage Daily News on the trooper ex-brother in law that Palin didn't feel was fit to represent the State of Alaska. Please read it.

I'm out of space so I'll post the rest in my next post....

Are you the judge or the jury? You state "there is ample evidence" as if that were fact. The fact is, there IS NOT ample evidence, or else Gov. Palin would not be on the ticket. Now, evidence may present itself in due time, but you are WAY ahead of yourself to suggest you know the entire case.

Wow, no wonder she was picked, she's a continuation of the same ole. She doesn't have to be trained by the likes of Monica Goodling, she already there.

Last year, Palin announced she was stopping state work on the controversial project, earning her admirers from earmark critics and budget hawks from around the nation. The move also thrust her into the spotlight as a reform-minded newcomer.

The state, however, never gave back any of the money that was originally earmarked for the Gravina Island bridge, said Weinstein and Elerding.

In fact, the Palin administration has spent "tens of millions of dollars" in federal funds to start building a road on Gravina Island that is supposed to link up to the yet-to-be-built bridge, Weinstein said.

Great article...

Seems like while McCain wants to continue with Bush's policies, Palin will fit right in with Cheney's abuse of power...

The ability to abuse power is an essential element to being a successful republican. Bush has shown that it is easy to abuse power and not be held accountable for it.

How can we expect to regain credibility in this world so that we can best negotiate with world powers if we put someone in office who has none (or in this case, 2).

Obama/Biden '08
