SEPT 3 -- Police Infiltrated Anti-RNC Group: An affidavit shows that informants were spying on the RNC Welcoming Committee.

Almost a year to the day before the Republican National Convention began, members of a self-described anarchist group gathered to talk about ways to disrupt it, including kidnapping delegates, sabotaging air vents at the Xcel Energy Center, blocking bridges and "capturing federal buildings" in Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Unbeknownst to the RNC Welcoming Committee, two police informants and an undercover investigator had infiltrated their ranks, according to an affidavit and search warrant application filed Tuesday. The informants and investigator accessed group e-mails, attended meetings, talked strategies with members and participated in camps and workshops.

The 17-page document, signed by Ramsey County District Judge Joanne Smith, laid out the evidence that led the Ramsey County Sheriff's Department to raid a St. Paul business and three Minneapolis homes Friday night and Saturday morning.

SEPT 1 -- Thousands March, Some Turn Violent: Protesters clashed with police at the Republican National Convention.

Protesters smashed windows, punctured car tires and threw bottles Monday during an anti-war march to the site of the Republican National Convention. Police used pepper spray in confrontations with demonstrators and arrested five.

Instead of the single coherent march that organizers had hoped for, fringe groups of anarchists and others wrought havoc along the streets between the state Capitol and the Xcel Energy Center where the convention was taking place.

SEPT 1 -- 50,000 Expected To Protest: Protesters say they aren't deterred by Bush and Cheney's absence or police raids.

Despite the big-name cancellations and the preconvention police raids, organizers expect thousands of anti-war demonstrators to march this afternoon from the State Capitol to the site of the Republican National Convention.

They say their passion will not be dampened now that President George Bush and Vice President Dick Cheney are skipping their convention speeches because of Hurricane Gustav. If anything, they say, the storm enhances their message that investing in human needs must outweigh waging an expensive war.

But the protesters are also concerned that aggressive police tactics could cull their numbers, which they estimate could reach 50,000 today.

AUG 31 -- Federal Government Involved In Raids On Protesters: Glenn Greenwald reports that it is increasingly clear the federal government is involved in raids on protesters at the Republican National Convention:

As the police attacks on protesters in Minnesota continue -- see this video of the police swarming a bus transporting members of Earth Justice, seizing the bus and leaving the group members stranded on the side of the highway -- it appears increasingly clear that it is the Federal Government that is directing this intimidation campaign. Minnesota Public Radio reported yesterday that "the searches were led by the Ramsey County Sheriff's office. Deputies coordinated searches with the Minneapolis and St. Paul police departments and the Federal Bureau of Investigation."

Today's Star Tribune added that the raids were specifically "aided by informants planted in protest groups." Back in May, Marcy Wheeler presciently noted that the Minneapolis Joint Terrorist Task Force -- an inter-agency group of federal, state and local law enforcement led by the FBI -- was actively recruiting Minneapolis residents to serve as plants, to infiltrate "vegan groups" and other left-wing activist groups and report back to the Task Force about what they were doing. There seems to be little doubt that it was this domestic spying by the Federal Government that led to the excessive and truly despicable home assaults by the police yesterday.

AUG 31 -- Protest Groups File Court Order: Protesters try to prevent police from seizing equipment.

Two organizations said today they filed an emergency motion with the court Saturday to try to prevent police from seizing video equipment and cell phones used to document officers' conduct.

....

The release said "examples of police interference with the right to document their conduct" included seizure of equipment in Minneapolis from three journalists with Glass Bead Collective and targeting of journalists during a raid in St. Paul on Saturday.

The National Lawyers' Guild have volunteers to deter and document police abuse at the RNC.

AUG 30 -- RNC Protest Sites Raided By Police: Five people were arrested and more than 100 detained in a raid targeting the RNC Welcoming Committee.

Ramsey County authorities conducted raids across Minneapolis and St. Paul Friday and Saturday as a pre-emptive strike against disruptive protests of the Republican National Convention.

Five people were arrested and more than 100 were handcuffed, questioned and released by scores of deputies and police officers, according to police and elected officials familiar with the raids.

In a statement Saturday morning, Ramsey County Sheriff Bob Fletcher said the St. Paul raid targeted the RNC Welcoming Committee, a group he described as "a criminal enterprise made up of 35 self-described anarchists...intent on committing criminal acts before and during the Republican National Convention."

There were five raids conducted over 24 hours, the Minnesota Independent reports.

YOUNG PATRIOTS Update:

You can find the latest news regarding the activities today in St. Paul:

Blocking traffic, breaking windows, slashing tires.

How can this happen in a fascist police state?

Take a good look at the slide show, Christi B. These are the people who kill free speech. Not the police and not the Republicans. Nobody has any objection to peaceful protesting.

The Republicans have waged war on us by allowing the sick to have their insurance taken away, by people who through no fault of their own have had their homes taken away, by shipping our jobs away, by killing our soldiers for a war of oil where we didn't even get the oil. There is a death toll associated with their actions. The time for peaceful protests are over, it's time to start putting some fear back into the GOP who is fearless of the America people they exploit.

You'd think....anti-war protesters wouldn't revert to violence for their cause. How hypocritical.

Many policemen have no problem slamming their fists or batons into the faces of peaceful protesters. For a nation that boasts about being about freedom, you would think protest would be encouraged, as dissent IS freedom.

Typical.

Pigs goad you into a fight then claim to be up holding the peace.

What is with the pound them with tear gas and arrest those who stand up against your brown shirt tactics?

The constitution you know that GD piece of paper give us the right of assemble and the right of free speech.

What I see is the pigs coming down on people and the people defending them selves.

Why do they confiscate cameras, cell phones and video recorders? What is it they are afraid the American public might see?

What happened to FREEDOM OF SPEECH?

The Republicans were rallying the PUMAs in Denver in order to create havoc and disunity, but now that the tables are turned they are all about STIFLING FREEDOM OF SPEECH.

The tactics that are being used to stop the protesters do not reflect on the DEMOCRATIC PRINCIPLES OF THE USA.

What are they going to do with the delegates from the COMPETING CONVENTION in the twin city? .......RUN THEM OUT OF TOWN?

Where's the coverage of these potentially explosive abuses of police power, including the federal bureau of investigation?

I think this site could at least cover it, together with Palin's inability to engage in either personal or extended family planning.

Given our declining civil liberties the past 7 years, I believe the story. Bloggers on this site are criticizing Huffpost for not having this article more prominently displayed......at least they've reported it.....more than you can say for the MSM.

All those MSM journalists camped out for these conventions, and they tell us absolutely nothing about protester groups. All they need to do is simply say the rough # of people and the cause of the bigger groups. I was just looking in a Canadian newspaper yesterday, and they actually make mention of their public protests and their beef (dah!).

During the DNC last week, the MSM kept referring collectively to "the protesters". But there were apparently various groups with various causes (e.g., anti-war, anti-?). Why wasn't there ANY MSM coverage...considering the very mass media present?

How can we say we are the world's beacon of Democracy when “the authorities” strongly discourage protests?! Any protest is portrayed as extreme leftist craziness...which is yet another means of control...and really does not describe many protesters who have legitimate concerns.

The Republicans and their storm troopers are showing their true colors. How long will we allow them to act as if this country is the Soviet Union? How long will we let tactics better suited for the Third Riech be carried out against our citizens? Arrest people who have actually COMMITTED crimes. Arresting people before the fact is nothing more than totalitarian oppression of the opposition. Throw out the Republican party! Hold those responsible for these arrests accountable. Throw THOSE criminals in jail, not citizens preparing to exercise their constitutional right to protest. Until they perform illegal acts those protestors are still citizens exercising their rights and not criminals.

The good people of America sat idly by as their government let the people of New Orleans drown/die of dehydration during Katrina.

The good people of America sat idly by and watched a Republican cabal lynched their historically great president - William Clinton.

The good people of America cowered in fear as a Neocon cabal hijacked their country and government and dismantled the American Constitution.

The good people of America, wallowing in apathy, will do nothing to bring a criminal administration to justice.

If God and his angels have left the planet - the only hope left is in - the good people.

It is good to see that 50,000 people are demonstrating, but in a country of 300 million where are all the other good people?

Yes, many bad things have happened in America these past 8 years. It does seem that bad things happen when good people do nothing. Just keep in mind that 50,000 is a small number, but sometimes large fires result from a small spark. I only hope that America votes in unprecedented numbers in November and the Republicans are swept from office and forced to spend years in the wilderness contemplating their evil deeds.

Think anyone who has lost his/her house because of a foreclosure should be out there marching too. MC has so many houses he has lost count of them and this is insulting to have such a person with so much wealth running for prez when so many people have lost their homes. It's like kicking someone when they're down. So unfair.

It goes to the fact that McCain called Obama a rich elitist that was out of touch with American workers.
That is why McCain not remembering how many mansions he and his wife own, or how the private jet he flies pays for refueling becomes poignant. It is the hypocrisy of those statements that call down the criticism.

I find it interesting that McCain people were allowed to disrupt the DNC meeting to a very small degree, with their protest (which were not stopped, but controlled and limited to a safety zone), where as the Republicans are arresting people and preventing any demonstrations. They are referring to those protester as radicals, and splinter groups and a threat to McCains security, they the are able to use federal people to stop it all. I guess it only goes to show how desperate the republican party really is that they would classify, common every day Americans as radical terroristic trouble makers. Great job republican party, hidding behind the fed's to keep the truth of your failures from becoming clear and real to all American.

The disruptive protesters, the ones who needed arresting in Denver, were all various leftist groups, like Code Pink, Recreate '68, etc.

Also, the Denver authorities and Feds made numerous raids in the weeks before the DNC convention, and recovered similar materials to the ones captured in these St Paul raids--stockpiles of urine, slingshots, caltrops, etc. Denver set up a "free speech" cage, and a large detention area for arrestees. It was knicknamed "Gitmo-on-the-Platte".

Don't kid yourself that this is only happening in St Paul. The security ops for Denver were vast, and the raids went on for weeks prior to the convention.

What this article called Earth Justice group with a bus was the Our Earth Activist Training Sustainable Skills Bus, Permabus for short. They travel around giving lessons to people in how to create a sustainable world. The police took the bus and left the family who had spent 7 months traveling in it giving the lessons, on the side of the road...the 17 year old with her parents.

Seems that some folks are terrified of children making seed balls and learning how to turn your garbage into garden soil.

Starhawk, a trainer in Permaculture came to New Orleans after Katrina, teaching people how to clean the toxins out of their yards. I think enough is enough as far as the police state, and it is only we the people that can fix it.

Code Pink was out in force at Denver and they did not get arrested.

Also, Denevr passed some new laws prior to the convention; one new law specifically allowed the cops to arrest anyone carrying a container of human feces on the street. That's how crazy the anti-war nuts were--they were threatening to use feces bombs against the police.

This was all in the news. i'm surprised you didn't hear about it.
