Biden: Difference Between Me And Palin -- "She's Good-Looking"

Joe Biden says there are obvious differences between himself and fellow vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin, but they're not just on policy. She's good-looking.

"There's a gigantic difference between John McCain and Barack Obama and between me and I suspect my vice presidential opponent," Biden said at an outdoor rally Sunday, getting ready to hit the GOP ticket for their economic policies.

"She's good-looking," he quipped.

Judge Palin for her qualifications. Judge her for her positions, her personality, her actions.

This kind of "joke" isn't funny, it's condescending, not just to Palin, but to all women. Through centuries men (and some women) have equaled being a good-looking woman to being a stupid woman. (Never the same way about a good looking man.) Dismissing SP because of her good looks is no good. She should be dismissed because of her lack of experience, her positions, her actions. Implying she lacks experience but has looks, lacks intelligence, but has looks, etc, etc, is the same old prejudice confirmed again - whether Joe Biden shares this prejudice or not. (I personally think not, he just uses it to score cheap points.)

Besides, what qualifications? She has none. She want to a backwater college on an athletic scholarship. What positions? She refused to fill out a questionnaire on her positions even after her boss asked her to. She'[s anti-choice, no exception for rape or incest. She wants creationism taught. She is anti-sex education, abstinence only (How'd that work out for ya, Ms. "my teenage kid is preggers?"). She wants to drill in the ANWR, she's anti-environment, and she's a Dominionist.

Personality: Vindictive; will use the power of office to fire anyone she doesn't agree with. She's nicknamed "Barracuda." Touts her "90% approval" (actually 67% and sinking). Lied at her nomination about being against the Bridge to Nowhere (ran for governor on the basis of being FOR it).

Actions: took Wasilla $20 million into debt for a new sports stadium; raised sales tax to cover costs; didn't do her homework (the land designated for the stadium was owned by a developer); tried to take the land via eminent domain; the Court handed her her ass, and now the city has to pay for the land and pay off the debt. Covered up her husband's DUI while accusing her ex-brother-in-law of DUI (apparently found to be untrue).

Of course commenting how hot she is is sexist. But to be honest, you expect that from certain Republicans - and other Republicans won't attack the former Republicans for being sexist. Democrats, however, will be attacked for using sexist lines & scoring sexist points.

As for the rest of what you're saying: These are the things she should be attacked for. Those are fair game. But implying "there's one difference between us - she is good looking" when everyone knows & thinks "there's one huge difference between us - I have the necessary experience, she doesn't" is scoring cheap points on behalf of her gender.

Women are always judged for our looks. Making SP's looks a subject in the campaign is the kind of distraction that reminds us. Makes us mad. Makes us feel underestimated. And all of you saying "this isn't offensive", look at the posters here calling this an elegant attack, or applauding it for being a nice offence. Of course it is an attack.

It's just like when a man looks at my tits, instead of listening to my words, and then claiming that it is "a compliment" that he does. It's some kind of patronizing strategy men have, to all times, used against women. And I don't want anyone to go there, towards Palin. There are more than enough legitimate reasons for attack. Non-sexist reasons for attack. Use those.

He is implying that good looking equals disqualified. And that's what's condescending, and that's what makes him vulnerable for sexism attacks - and those attacks can be damaging to Biden & to the Democratic Party.

Personally, I don't think Biden is a sexist man. (This is an argument of the "I have black friends, I am no racist"/Charlie Sheen-kind, but nevertheless.) He is married to a highly educated, very intelligent woman whom he clearly respects. He has a record of voting supporting he is anti discrimination of any kind. But the fact that he uses Palin's look to score cheap points still enrages me. Enough of the nonsense implication that some goodlooking woman can't be smart, too.

based on her background and what is true or not that comment was probably the only thing on the surface that is true. I'm a woman and I wonder why "we" get so sensitive about what is obvious and what we haven't thought ourselves.
