I Like ItI Don’t Like It
Duchovny

"X Files" star David Duchovny's announcement that was he was in rehab for sex addiction sparked a lot of rumors. One of them was that he'd been caught having an affair with his tennis instructor (a woman) and that he was undergoing rehab to save his marriage.

Alas, it isn't so, says a close friend. Duchovny did not check in because of an extramarital fling. That much the friend is certain of. Even more so: Duchovny's problem has been longstanding. His wife, Tea Leoni, was aware of it for some time. It had just reached a point where it had to be treated.

I have inferred from my conversation with Duchovny's friend that this has something to do with an addiction to pornography, probably on the internet. It's the sex equivalent of a gambling addiction, where the person is just hopelessly trapped in chat rooms....

By the way, I'm told that David issued that press statement about his rehab because the tabloids were about to issue their own story. What happened: A fellow patient "dropped a dime" on David to make some extra coin. Nice confidentiality!

Maybe that mental image will be there now every time he shows up in public.

That's good news. All things being equal; at least there was no infidelity.

It's also sad that people with partners go and look at the internet anyway.

I am sending my best wishes to David and his family---I have always been a fan and I, too, would love to see other X-Files movies with Gillian and David in the future. Best of luck to you, David!

I can imagine you seeing another X-Files movie. Having the theater to yourself must rock.

Didn't Fox Mulder also have a porn addiction? It was alluded to several times on the show.
Was Chris Carter trying to tell us somthing?

In retrospect maybe those scenes weren't in the script after all, they just couldn't get Duchovny to stop long enough to film the scene.

And if he was a porn star, people would be looking down at him... below the waist.

I wish David good luck, sincerely! Rehab can sometimes help people get back on their feet - but the over medicalization of everything nowadays is ridiculous. People gobbling toxic psych meds "as prescribed" or stuffing their faces with nasty processed foods and high fructose corn syrup is not a problem but a guy with TMTOHH (time) suddenly has a "disease" and he needs to "surrender to a higher power" and a bunch of other nonsense. The 12 step thing and disease model of addiction was popularized because insurance co's and the military needed an official sounding excuse to allow pay for treatment. Look it up, it's true.

I don't care what they say. This is role research.

Also, for an addict, it's a good place to meet chicks -- and dudes.

Surely there can't be very many people out there on the Internet who'd like to have sex with David Duchovny...

So, as long as he isn't sleeping with his tennis instructor or a prostitute, it isn't cheating, right? If he is wacking off while looking at porn sites all day long...that isn't cheating?? To lust after someone other than your wife and to wish you were having sex with that person isn't cheating? How is it really different?

c'mon, are you really serious!?!? For one, he won't be passing on a venereal disease to his wife and possibly children...

For two, just because someone fantasizes about another doesn't necessarily mean they wish to/would rather be with that someone. You don't think it's fairly common for some women to 'fantasize' about the men they see on the cover of your average paperback romance novel. What if either member of a given couple enjoy 'gratifying themselves' in private with no outside stimulation, and they don't necessarily think of their partner during - are they cheating? What if they don't even think of any partner at all and they just enjoy the physical pleasure of the situation - is that cheating? Bah! I seem to remember that many experts agree that fantasy is (or at least can/should be) an appropriate and even healthy aspect to a couples relationship, EVEN IF THEY DO NOT FANTASIZE ABOUT EACH OTHER! Now, obviously this particular situation escalated to a point where at least one of them found it unhealthy, and they are dealing with it. Let's not turn it into more of a controversy than it already isn't!

I was right. He was addicted to Mr. Left Hand. It's good to know that he didn't cheat on his gorgeous wife.

This is a classic case of TMI. But we all know WHY we had to know (because we all HAVE TO KNOW). How many of us would stand up to the type of public scrutiny and impossibly high standards people like Mr. Duchovny are subject to? I inhale and I like to suck toes, but do you really want to know that? You would, if I were on TV...

If I knew David Duchovny was on the chat rooms, I'd certainly log in a lot! I'd rather think I was "chatting" with him than with some icky hairy sweaty loser!
And if there are guys who look like him at sex addict meetings, where do I sign up?

This is silly. "Sex addiction" is not the problem. The emotional issues that cause people to turn to other things to create an emotional state change to escape their problems, rather than facing them head on and fixing them, is the problem.

And spanking the monkey to porn, even all the time, is not a "problem". Porn provides an easy, quick release, it plays to men's visual nature and gives us a never ending source of variety.
Also, orgasms feel wonderful. Is it any wonder why porn is "addictive"?

Even if time spent indulging in porn cuts into the relationship - the PORN is STILL not the problem. Some people turn to drugs, alcohol, food, sex in order to create an emotional state change and run away from their problems, but those things are not the problem.
So avoiding alcohol altogether is NOT the solution for an alcoholic. It's treating whatever the pit of despair is in the person's soul that's driving them to drink.

If Duchovny is rubbing one out to porn too much for his wife's taste, she needs to sit down and talk to him about what's really eating him because excessive pleasure seeking of any variety is a telltale sign that there's something missing in that person's life that they are trying to fill with excitement and variety.
But let's not blame porn or alcohol or whatever indulgences are the bogeyman of the day. In moderation, these things are fine.

My first thought was that he might be drumming up business for his Californication (sic) series. But another case of who cares.
